Smiley Smile Stuff / Brian Wilson Solo Albums / Re: Orange Crate Art (BW/VDP solo)

[...] and let me just add that if Brian were to tour THIS album, i would be at every single show. It is sheer beauty...and the perfect Sunday morning album, too!
OCA demands to be preformed live. I would love to hear OCA sans synths--this time with real strings. They could record a live album it at The Hollywood Bowl with orchestra. It would be legendary! Imagine the possibilities, Adrian

Call me a loner on this one -- I love it and its gentle nostalgic feel, and Brian was the perfect choice to sing here. I loved this one from first play and I still do.
I agree. I may be in the minority but I believe this is BW/VDP underrated yet imperfect gem. Far from perfect but from first spin-- I was and still am hooked. Adrian

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: LOS: The Last Great Brian Wilson Record

Can we all agree that Brian's new music is more substantial than Paul Mccartney's? [...] is this correct?
No not at all. I quote the great Bob Dylan: " I'm in awe of McCartney. He can do it all and he's never let up. He's got the gift for melody, he's got the rhythm. He can play any instrument. "And he can sing the ballad as good as anybody. I mean, I just wish he'd quit!" Wilson maybe our reigning king but to me McCartney, all his canon even modern era Macca, will always be royalty! Thanks again for recommendation, Today I'm a LOS Adrian

It's the premiere of Carl 'Mad Dog' Wilson's "scream, bark, and growl" vocal stylings. who knew he could belt it out like THAT?!!! sure, he's straining at times... but what a killer performance overall. [...]how many had the balls to cover something like "I Was Made To Love Her"??!!! I guarantee you that NOBODY was expecting the freakin' BEACH BOYS to pull it off.
I so agree. Although, I have to say love the extended version from Rarities with the extra harmony acapella, a Lil something extra for an extraordinary cover such as this one!

I'm also a W.H. fan but I don't love it as much as Smile! Still an underrated gem. On my mega Beach Boys playlist I have Wild Honey after Smiley Smile. I love hearing both back to back when I'm walking in Huntington Gardens/library in L.A. How can you not be outside L.A. and listen or sing Beach Boys songs?

^i love tht book. Yeah, factually inaccurate in some places, but a great read nonetheless.
How inaccurate anything major? ______
Somewhat on topic....who did the deep voice chanting (for both Heroes and Villains and Do You Dig Worms) - and where did Brian get the inspiration to do this chanting/hawaiian prayer?
Fairly brilliant idea to introduce to pop music IMO.

One of the most beautiful moments from the 'Smile' tapes, in my opinion, is the 'Wa-ha-la-lu-le,wa-ha-la-lu-lai,keeny-wa-ka-pu-la' section of 'Roll Plymouth Rock'. Does anyone know what this translates to or was it just gibberish meant to sound Hawaiian?
I'm reading Domenic Priore's book Smile: The Story of Brian Wilson's lost masterpiece, and in Ch.6, page 67, second to last pp: "In one of SMILE'S neatest sequences, Brian sings a solemn Hawaiian chant[...]"mahalo lu lei" is a Hawaiian Thanksgiving' said Parks. " It's a prayer, and that was something Brain did absolutely of his own volition. i just brought in that Hawaiian collection of words." I'm not sure if this answers your query but interesting insight into BW and VDP songwriting process for Smile. Adrian

"Oh Lord I lay me down...." from you know where. Kills me.
Do yourself a favor and listen to the last 30 seconds or so of that song with high quality headphones. It's an experience you won't forget. Thank You. You Are So Right. So amazing. I love that aspect of Beach Boys songs, if you just wait and really listen you will find masterpieces of aural greatness in just about every song. It's like every piece of music is a journey inside the beauty, the madness and the glory of it all. Who couldn't love The Beach Boys? Essential in this world.
