With a sniff and a spliff. Very emotional for me. Can't wait!

I just discovered this amazing rendition of "That Same Song" with The Alexander Hamilton Double Rock Baptist Choir. Wow what quality? Has this ever been released officially or unofficially?

I can't stop listening to this,, amazing! Awe-inspiring!

I truly Love this,

4  Smiley Smile Stuff / Brian Wilson Solo Albums / Re: Orange Crate Art (BW/VDP solo) on: August 10, 2011, 12:46:58 PM
[...] and let me just add that if Brian were to tour THIS album, i would be at every single show.  It is sheer beauty...and the perfect Sunday morning album, too!

OCA demands to be preformed live. I would love to hear OCA sans synths--this time with real strings. They could record a live album it at The Hollywood Bowl with orchestra. It would be legendary!

Imagine the possibilities,

Adrian

Call me a loner on this one -- I love it and its gentle nostalgic feel, and Brian was the perfect choice to sing here.  I loved this one from first play and I still do.

I agree.  I may be in the minority but I believe this is BW/VDP underrated yet imperfect gem.

Far from perfect but from first spin-- I was and still am hooked.

I can definitely say I wouldn't have been introduced to Brian Wilson if it wasn't for Paul McCartney and his unbridled enthusiastic  love of BW.

Thank You, Macca!

Can we all agree that Brian's new music is more substantial than Paul Mccartney's? [...] is this correct?

No not at all. I quote the great Bob Dylan: "I'm in awe of McCartney. He can do it all and he's never let up. He's got the gift for melody, he's got the rhythm. He can play any instrument. "And he can sing the ballad as good as anybody. I mean, I just wish he'd quit!"

Wilson maybe our reigning king but to me McCartney, all his canon even modern era Macca, will always be royalty!

Thanks again for recommendation,

Today I'm a LOS

It's the premiere of Carl 'Mad Dog' Wilson's "scream, bark, and growl" vocal stylings. who knew he could belt it out like THAT?!!! sure, he's straining at times... but what a killer performance overall. [...]how many had the balls to cover something like "I Was Made To Love Her"??!!! I guarantee you that NOBODY was expecting the freakin' BEACH BOYS to pull it off.

I so agree. Although, I have to say love the extended version from Rarities with the extra harmony acapella, a Lil something extra for an extraordinary cover such as this one!

Wonderful performance.

I-pod shuffle helped me rediscover this gem yesterday!

Good times,

11  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Dennis WIilson's "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away" from Ann Arbor concert 1966 on: August 06, 2011, 04:47:10 PM
I can't stop listening to Dennis very quiet but deeply emotional live take on The Beatles/Lennon's "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away" from Ann Arbor concert 1966. I prefer this softer version. It shows the emotional depth of Dennis vocal. I love the way he hums the George Martin string/instrumental coda at the end of the song. It's as if he's connecting totally to the song.

Anyone else heard this version?

I'm also a W.H. fan but I don't love it as much as Smile! Still an underrated gem. On my mega Beach Boys playlist I have Wild Honey after Smiley Smile. I love hearing both back to back when I'm walking in Huntington Gardens/library in L.A. How can you not be outside L.A. and listen or sing Beach Boys songs?

13  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Actor Suggestions For Brian Biopic......... on: July 30, 2011, 12:43:29 AM
Alec Baldwin could do the BW of the last decade.

I always saw Alec Baldwin as Brian Wilson. He so could do it. The only problem his age. But he's got the acting chops to pull it off. His performance would do Brian proud!
14  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Okay I'm confused...Does Dennis or Brian sing lead on You are My Sunshine. on: July 26, 2011, 12:52:50 PM
I was reading Priore's story of Smile says that Dennis sung lead on You Are My Sunshine? Another source said that Dennis sings on The Beach Boys version???(which one?) and Brian sings on final Smile version?

is there another Beach Boys version of You Are My Sunshine

Which is it Dennis or Brian?

Listening to Purple Chick Smile and I keep going back and forth, Dennis or Brian and now it sounds like both them?

Please help,

Thanks,

Adrian
15  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / re: Malibu Sunset (listed in Mojo 60s Smile issue) on: July 25, 2011, 08:05:41 PM
Does anyone have any info about this Malibu Sunset unreleased song?

It was one of the first song listed under the Smile inspired tracks side-bar piece in the Mojo 60s Smile issue. Great issue comes with 7inch yellow vinyl of Cabin-Essence.

curious,

^i love tht book. Yeah, factually inaccurate in some places, but a great read nonetheless.

How inaccurate anything major?
______

Somewhat on topic....who did the deep voice chanting (for both Heroes and Villains and Do You Dig Worms) - and where did Brian get the inspiration to do this chanting/hawaiian prayer?

Fairly brilliant idea to introduce to pop music IMO.

One of the most beautiful moments from the 'Smile' tapes, in my opinion, is the 'Wa-ha-la-lu-le,wa-ha-la-lu-lai,keeny-wa-ka-pu-la' section of 'Roll Plymouth Rock'.
Does anyone know what this translates to or was it just gibberish meant to sound Hawaiian?

I'm reading Domenic Priore's book Smile: The Story of Brian Wilson's lost masterpiece, and in Ch.6, page 67, second to last pp:
"In one of SMILE'S neatest sequences, Brian sings a solemn Hawaiian chant[...]"mahalo lu lei" is a Hawaiian Thanksgiving' said Parks. " It's a prayer, and that was something Brain did absolutely of his own volition. i just brought in that Hawaiian collection of words."

I'm not sure if this answers your query but interesting insight into BW and VDP songwriting process for Smile.

"Oh Lord I lay me down...." from you know where.  Kills me.
Do yourself a favor and listen to the last 30 seconds or so of that song with high quality headphones. It's an experience you won't forget.  Smiley

Thank You. You Are So Right. So amazing. I love that aspect of Beach Boys songs, if you just wait and really listen you will find masterpieces of aural greatness in just about every song.

It's like every piece of music is a journey inside the beauty, the madness and the glory of it all. Who couldn't love The Beach Boys? Essential in this world.

I'm loving that wailing blues guitar solo that's floating throughout Steamboat. Steamboat is one, of the many, underrated B.B. classics.
20  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Best version of Wouldn't It Be Nice from Pet Sounds. Mono vs. Stereo mix? on: July 22, 2011, 04:52:58 PM
So, let's say you pick stereo mix, which version do you prefer Brian or Mike singing in the bridge?

I prefer the 2000 Stereo mix with Love on bridge on Summer Love Songs compilation.
21  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Best version of Wouldn't It Be Nice from Pet Sounds. Mono vs. Stereo mix? on: July 22, 2011, 01:58:57 PM
I need help settling a debate among BB friends. One claims Mono mix, original is better, another die hard BB fan claims to like Stereo Mix of Wouldn't it Be Nice? I told them I would ask the experts at the Smiley Smiley Forum.

So BB experts sound off,

Wouldn't it be Nice Stereo Mix or Mono?

Thanks,

Adrian

The "come and do it baby" just before the outro in Do It Again. Short, simple but essential.

I love the part 2:00 in, after they sing "do it again" mike or dennis yell out this climatic owwww that's infectious. Spontaneous moments like this are what we live for in music. Legendary!

Friends, Friends, and even more Friends...

Specifically? The bass arrangements and the organ...is there a simple slide guitar line in BHTM? Also, great bells throughout...

Do you like the acapella version on the b-side of Don't Fight The Sea? Wow, both version are on my mega B.B. playlist!

The ultra surf guitar solo on early version of Do It Again from Endless Harmony. It's missing Drums. But, even in this incarnation, this early version proves do it again is a B.B./M.L. classic.
