Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Cowsills Global Album - Some Good Years

Thanks Jeremy. Would love to hear from others on what they think of the song. The Global album has just been released and the story behind the album is very interesting. In a lot of ways the Cowsills story parallels The Beach Boys. There father was a sick tyrant who left them broke. They are a family band with infectious harmonies. And because they were considered a bubble gum band from the 60s as an inspiration for the Partridge Family show know one took them serious later in life. In fact, they all became great musicians and writers. When they were recording Global in the early 90s they were making the circuit in the LA club scene. The music on this album shows how talented they were and still are. The 2022 release of Rhythm of the world is worth a listen also. Here is another song from Global. When a promoter at AM records played this for the head of AM records the record executive was so impressed with the song. When he found out it was the Cowsills he fired the record promoter. Sought of why the DJ would not play Sunflower in the early 70’s. Like I said a lot of parallels between the 2 groups https://youtu.be/kJee6LAjIHc?si=vcf4egaryO_q3TLy

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Cowsills Global Album - Some Good Years

After seeing the Cowsills “family band” documentary a few years ago I was drawn to their music. I downloaded Global at the time and was shocked to how great it was. Originally recorded in the early 90s. They then released a new album in 2022 Rhythm of the world”. I was instantly hooked so I started listening to Susan Cowsills solo stuff. I believe she has one of the best female vocals in both Rock and Country. The story behind the 1992 Global is a real interesting one. Recorded in 1991-1992 but not released until 1998. What I recently learned from the liner notes is that in 1991 Bob Cowsill offered his “Some Good Years” to The Beach Boys but they turned it down. This song with Gary Griffen on keyboards has hit written all over it. Not sure why the boys would have turned it down?? This was around “Summer In Paradise”? https://youtu.be/8g7Xp-sI3DM?si=vdtm3g-Ns_Pe2N85

I was working in Tokyo back in 1992 when I stumbled down an alley way to a music shop that sold mostly bootleg cd’s. . I found a copy of sweet insanity and bought it. The sound quality is perfect as a released album. There are some hidden gems on there. I think water builds up is genius in the music production and the tea kettle sound in the background. There were also some added songs on this cd. I always loved Being with the one you love. I thought that song had a lot of potential.

I’ve had a very short bootleg of this song since the mid 70s. I know there is an extended version with The Beach Boys (Bruce and Al) singing the intro then a segue into long version with someone else’s lead. I was surprised that any version of this song did not show up on the Feel Flows box set since it was early 70s. Can anyone shed some light on this song. I always liked the intro boot that I had and whoever did the long country version did a nice job.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Live Deep Cuts album

After to listening to some of the live cuts from Made in California and the Feel Flows box set it would be great to get a double album or even a box set of live deep cuts. The live versions of Its About Time, Wild Honey, Surfs Up, Only With You, Susie Cinciinnati, Student Demonstration Time to name a few that have been released with these two box sets show just how powerful and relevant they were in the 70s. I have heard boots of Feel Flows, Okie from Muskogee, Jumpin Jack Flash , California Saga, Rockin All over the World, etc and they were great. I was playing the Feel Flows box set the other day and had some friends over. Student Demonstration Time (live version) came on and they couldn’t believe how The Beach Boys rocked. I know it is not a fan favorite but that song rocks on the box set. I’ve been going to BB concerts since 1971 so I know there are plenty of live deep cuts out there. Would love to see this happen……

Wow…I think what makes this special is seeing Dennis on drums right before his hand incident. I was lucky to see them play in Central Park that same year which was a PBS special and videos of the 30 minute PBS special are available. I was 13 and it was my first concert. I have listened to them everyday since and I’m now 63. It would be great to see this concert in full. I’m sure professional video exists as displayed here. Although I was blown away at Central Park, I always thought having Dennis on the drums gave the band completeness. This video would of the May 1 concert would fulfill my wildest dreams. I would love to show my kids what I experienced in 1971 so they could understand my obsession. They only know the BB on video from later concert videos and mtv of Kokomo.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Gershwin Album
|

I enjoy the first and last song on this album. The Like in Loving You and Nothing but Love. My understanding was that they were just snippets from Gershwin and Brian and Scott Bennett finished them. Can anyone shed any light on how much Brian was involved in the lyrical content or music content? They are two really great songs. Is it true that the Gershwin fam8ly trust wanted Brian to finish them? Is most of the finishing from Scott Bennett?

Well for the last 42 years I always thought it was Dennis. Carl had a much sweeter high voice although he sounded a little nasal on Goin South so maybe he had a cold or something. The album came out in the fall semester of my senior year of college and I remember catching 2 shows at Radio City when they were promoting the album. They were booed when they performed “Here Comes The Night” disco version. I think I’m going to continue to believe that it is Dennis not Carl on lead. My visual is Dennis singing the high part with that classic hand to the ear. Just my opinion.

I apologize I called it a falsetto. I was not referring to the high background on the bridge. What I was trying to convey is that I always thought Dennis was the lead and only lead vocal on this song where he sang the first and second verse in a high vocal and did the bridge in his normal vocal for that era. I al2ays thought that it was cool and rare to hear Dennis singing the high part. I went back and listened again and I still hear Dennis as the lead. You have to admit that the high vocal on the first and second voice is not a high part that you usually hear?

Gl back and listen to the backing falsetto vocal on Dennis’ solo album POB song “You and I”. ( No more lonely nights......). After that listen to the falsetto lead on Baby Blue. It is the same Dennis falsetto. I know Wikipedia has identified the falsetto to be Carl but my ears of 62 years hear Dennis.

Ever since I bought the album in 1979 I thought it was Dennis on falsetto. I just listened again and I think it is Dennis. Dennis occasionally sang with a falsetto. The falsetto backing vocal on “You and I” is Dennis and it is similar to Baby Blue. It definitely is not Carl on the falsetto. And yes we know that it is Dennis on the bridge.
