Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Dada and Cool Cool Water (and water chant)

I point-blank asked Brian on his message board once during a chat, "Brian, which songs were Water, Fire, Earth, and Air?" and he just made up some bullsh*t answer. It was awesome. So the 2005 version of Brian told me things like Surf's Up was Fire, and that Vegetables was water, etc. I can't remember which ones he said were what, but the way he said it so matter of factly was awesome.
I took it more as Brian thoght it was funny that anybody would obsess so much over it, than he didn't know. Sort of like if somebody asked the Dhali Lama the meaning of life, and he told them it was to drive a cadillac.
"Fire is Mrs O'Leary's Cow, Water, is Surf's up and air is Our Prayer and Earth is H&V. L&M Brian" (Google is an amazing thing).

Thanks a lot everyone! It's a real fun to work with the Google moog, I'm considering doing some more LY tracks That's great! I tried recording some stuff with the Google Moog, but I sucked at it. My timing was terrible; when I tried recording the second or third track, everything sounded on-time whilst playing, but when I played it back, it was all horribly out of sync. Once again, great job, that's fantastic!
Yeah, at first I had this problem too, but I found that this doodle works better through Chrome (no timing problem), and that you could play through the keyboard, which is much easier. Thanks again!

Material getting cut from an album? Shocker.
Why are people assuming this wasn't Brian's decision? You write a song that's too long, you edit it down. People saying they've made a mistake without even hearing what was cut is a bit too presumptuous.
And we're not even sure that anything was cut in the first place.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / The Smile Sessions Companion - Disk 1 (Stereo) *fixed tracks and mp3*

Hi Everyone, Just finished the first disk of my "Smile Sessions Companion" set. This is a complete stereo re-creation of TSS Disk 1 mix (down to the fades, fly-ins and volume adjustments). While I dearly love the mono mix, the stereo offers an altogether different listening experience - it's less "punchy" and "deep" than the mono but it allows you to "immerse" in the soundscape in a way that isn't possible with the mono mix. I took an approach of "stereo all the way", tastefully using panning tricks and added reverb for some tracks. It might not be for the taste of some, but the "stereo-philes" will enjoy. Many thanks for the Smiley Smilers who took the time and care to make their own mixes, especially bruiteur, seltaeb1012002, soniclovenoize and AlternateBrianWilson whose creative mixing ideas are all over my version. And of course thanks to ML&AB who made all this possible! We can't thank you enough. Now, for the music. Great Effort I love how parts of it (especially the vocals) seem to wrap around your ears like candyfloss round a stick not too into what you've done with Gee, and a few other bits go a little too off and go round a little deviation, it's your mix tho so fair play to you i do like 'DYLW's thats great especially from 1.08 onwards, that is the 1st candyfloss moment for me, 2:17 onwards does the same, reeeaalllly nice phat and hush/whisper, great timpani(?) sound. Barnyard with piano in or not - that is the question these days. eitherway great work, bv's a tad too subtle maybe? OMP/YAMS - drum bit just b4 the singin sounds alittle gated or alittle abrupt on the reverb?nice where the sax comes in, wanted more of this on my ears with this tune from the off really? CabinEssence -seems to loose vol/impact alittle at 0.43, also would be nice more stereo on over and over the crow cries uncover the cornfield Look 1.51 a teeny too sharp as edit for me? CIFOTM - nice spread at the beginning, nice sound/spread on the instruments after the vocals, good work Surf's up - a colossal tune if ever there was, really nice version - undecided on the 71 coda, such a great song tho, that ending is sooooo good - candyfloss moment defo!nice right at the end the harmonising na naaa na na, nana naaa lower bv - great to hear this bit VegaTables - is this a little quieter up to 1:25? maybe bring it up a notch on that section Holiday's one song i sooo wish wouldv had lead vocals on. can imagine it with 60s BB singin ala windchimes style. if only.... windchimes - great sound on the wood block, i duno but every edit ive heard of this on the 1.20 mark has always seemd like its choppd a little midg's dick of vocal off right at its beginning, tho 2.16 doesnt seem to have it? wierd, could be my ears but that take its from, i always notice it on dif mixes people have done - must to be due to the source Elements - nice and deep, couldv gone more shrill/spikey sounding too on the top end instrumentwise, great piece of audio imagery this tune Love to Say Da Da, another i'd have loved to hear with lead vocal on, reminds me of some of the 'today' album with it's unusual musical pauses really impressive piece of work. great effort! Wow, thanks for the detailed review! I'll definitely consider some of the comments for the revised mix (which I hope to finish soon).

I'm now working on an "Alternate Smile Sessions" set as a sort of a companion to the official one. It will be in flac and include: 1. This stereo edit of Disc 1 (including cross fades and fly-ins) 2. A mono re-construction of an "historical" Smile (12 tracks, no cross-fades or fly-ins). 3. More "clean" stereo/mono mixes of other songs. 4. "Fanmixers toolkit" - Smile bits and pieces in stereo/mono. 5. Vintage BW mixes of songs/sections.
Whatever became of this set? I was really looking forward to it! I've been a bit busy for a while, plus I know P.J. is working on a similar set... but I'm pretty close to finish mine, so if you people are interested I'll take the time to complete and upload it.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Vega-Tables and Cabin Essence - Vocals Only

Hey, they sound excellent! How'd you make these? Are there vocal-only tracks of this quality floating around in bootlegs or did you manage to remove the instrumentation?
Thanks! They are both kind of "frankenmixes", with material sourced mainly from the Backing Montage track on the box set and oopsing (Out Of Phase canceling of the center channel) of bootleg tracks. The amount of vocal layers and overdubs in Vega-Tables is amazing, I didn't really noticed it until I got to work on the mixes.

Hey Paul, do we know that the Vigotone mix is indeed the Comp Reel mix? There are 2 suspicious things about it: 1. The Whahalaloola vocals. They don't sound like the Beach Boys at all to me, and more importantly, they don't have the backing vocals (which were recorded *before* the lead and appear on every other DYLW mix). Also, they don't have the extra "wahalo..." that goes into the chorus reprise and is apperant on every other mix. 2. The more important thing - if you listen closely to the transition into that part, you'll hear that it crossfades, in a way that no other vintage BW mix does.
Do we know what is the source of the mix? How do we know it?
Another question: there are 2 mono mix attempts of DYLW on Secret Smile. Are they vintage, or just bootleg mono mixdowns?
Those things are important to me, as I am about to finish my "Alternate Smile Sessions" compilation and want to include every BW vintage mix available.
Thanks!
Hi Barnshine. I don't have any evidence that the comp reel is indeed on Vigotone, but I read it sometimes on this forum and actually just assumed it is the comp reel that's on Vigotone. Maybe someone who knows more about this subject could give us more info? And your questions: 1. I thought those were early vocals for that section, and were later re-overdubbed. 2. I actually don't really here that crossfade, maybe someone that knows more about this mix could gives us some more inforation here? About the two DYLW mixes on Secret Smile: I don't know if these are vintage mixes, but they could be for example 1966 assembly tapes, since the sections are roughly edited in the correct order but still need some final editing/mixing/fadein (and maybe overdubbing). A similar mix is on the Sea Of Tunes Source Tape, but in stereo. That's exactly what I thought. So we are in the same position Maybe anybody in the knows can shed some light on it?
