For further proof, notice that HGS is in the key of F. Yet She's going bald is in F#
Brian's voice is noticeably "off" when I speed "He Gives Speeches" up, it has that quality to it when you speed anyone's voice up and is especially obvious in the end when he's speaking. It's fairly low in Brian's register and his singing style seems kind of put on, I'm wondering if he meant for someone else (Mike?) to do the lead. To me the reverse is true. It doesn't sounds like Brian's usual voice till you crank up the speed.

Hello Stephen, long time no hear! Donny: Yeh I think you're right, they had to put a wrap round the capstan to speed up "Caroline No". Although I know Abbey Road had manged to cobble together a varispeed system by late 66/early 67 so I'm guessing the LA studios had also "come up to speed" with the latest gadget too.

exactly, these were the kind of reasons we used to use the vary speed. To do an over dub that had a difficult note or a different sound was required. But then you usually put it back to correct speed for playback unless you want an over all odd effect on everything. Eg Strawberry fields part 2. I shall continue to listen to my (IMHO) speed corrected version ;-)

First I'd like to say I love the box set, a few funny edits here and there but brilliant and deserving of the Grammy.
However, I hear He Gives Speeches and I swear the tape is runnig slow. Always thought it on the SOT boot too. I'm sure that is how it sounds on the tape at 15ips. But I suggest that for some reason it was recorded at 15ips plus a couple of notches on the varispeed. From working in a studio in the years of tape I know tha a few times we cut stuff just off 15ips, sometimes by accident , sometimes on purpose. My main reason for thinking is the tone of Brian's voice. He sounds like a tape slowed down.

I always used to speed it up on my smile comps back in the day and assumed that Mark and co would come to the same conclusion. Thoughts?

Just took delivery of the full box set. It really is a beautiful thing and well worth the money. Listening to the 45's at the moment, only one grumble so far. My heroes and villains single has a "vegetables" label on it. Was worried at 1st I'd have to send it back but it plays correctly. The singles labels are great btw. but not a great pressing on H&V pt1 it's pressed slightly off wonk if you know what I mean, a bit like my US pressing on "lovin feeling" which means it doesn't run at constant speed unless you can line it up Identically wonky on your turn table. the other side is ok though, And it's v cool!!

I've got the PS stereo mix on vinyl. Have to say that although I have a complete Beach boys lp vinyl collection and 99% of the 45's I mostly listen to the CD's. But that's because most of the UK pressings 65-69 are a bit horrible. Pet sounds in particular. the mono pressing appears to have been cut from a fold down of the "stereo" duophonic version so it's all doubled and echoey. Same goes for UK pressing of GOK/WIBN 45rpm I've got a US pressing of Little deuce and that sounds fantastic., as do the US singles.

Aside from the bits ond bobs on 20/20 and Heroes of course, the 1st Smile I heard was around 1992 I think when I got a bootleg that started with about 15 mins of good vibes sessions followed by "look" incorectly listed as " holidays" I think it was stuff bootleged from Mark L's rough mixes for the forthcoming Good Vibes box set. It was a bit Lo fi.

Agreed. To me they're up there among the best of 60's music. The Gaudio/Crewe productions are up there with Spector and Holland Dozier Holland. They've never had that mojo magazine cool factor for some reason and always get overlooked. BW may have a purer falsetto but Frankie Valli's voice is an amazing instrument. Try singing along to some of those tracks, the man is from out of space!

My fave bands are the Beatles , The Byrds and the Beach boys.
but I have to give extra love to The Fabs for being consistantly high quality 62-69. Brian's stuff 65-67 beats them I think , But The Beatles didn't have an MIU album or Keeping the Summer alive or Ringo's Drums. they may have done a Beatle's party but they only saw light on the mad xmas flexi discs.

Agree with Aegir, Genuine Imitation Life Gazette is a great, very under rated album. Also check out Frank Sinatra's Watertown written and produced by Bob Gaudio and Jake Holmes. Similar vibe to GILG.
Working My way back to you is another strong 4 seasons album.
