Zephyr Song has a nice melody, though...

Pity it's taken from "Oliver's Army"...  Smiley

OK - Worst Album. ... Shania Twain - "Up!"

I've seen Brian 3 times (including the first set of Smile shows), and this was the best.  OK, a full performance of Smile would have been nice, but a straight-ish hit-after-hit set was ideal for a festival crowd and it worked perfectly; none of that "plugging the new album" trap that some artists fall into when playing to non-fans.

The atmosphere was amazing; a large field packed with people, all singing along and many visibly weeping with joy (no joke!).  (Maybe the cider bus helped a bit, and the way that we had wall-to-wall blue sky after 2 days in the mud.)

Either way, this was the single best gig or festival performance I've ever been to, and I don't expect it will ever be bettered.  And no, I wasn't on drugs (cider excepted).

I wonder if they could be OOPSed with the full versions to produce vocal-only (or nearly vocal only) mixes.  That's what I'd like to try, especially with the CD sourced material.

My compilation is a companion to the usual BB best ofs:  I don't include any pre-Smile stuff.

It's About Time
This Whole World
The Night Was So Young
You Need A Mess Of Help To Stand Alone
Darlin' (Fake Stereo Mix)
Steamboat
Sail On Sailor
Never Learn Not To Love
Long Promised Road
Cabinessence
Slip On Through
Forever
Solar System
Time To Get Alone
A Day In The Life Of A Tree
'Til I Die
Surf's Up

Not in any particular order, other than one I find pleasurable to listen to (the last 3 tracks had to be there).  And I would have included much more Smile and Love You material but this is a compilation for general consumption, not for BW fans only.

I can't get RapidShare to work for this one (it's been fine for other files).  Has the download been removed?  Or could anyone help me with another link or PM...?

9  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: SMiLE 2004 Backing Tracks Info Needed! on: January 11, 2006, 03:52:21 AM
Are the instrumental tracks available from a digital source (i.e. non-vinyl)?  If so, has anybody attempted to subtract the intrumental tracks from the complete versions, and isolate the new vocals?  Or are there mix/mastering differences which make this impossible?

10  Smiley Smile Stuff / Album, Book and Video Reviews And Discussions / Re: Pick the 10 essential Beach Boy and BB solo albums on: January 09, 2006, 01:18:12 AM
That was surprisingly easy.

1 ) Pet Sounds
2 ) The Beach Boys Love You
3 ) Good Vibrations - Thirty Years Of The Beach Boys
4 ) The Beach Boys Today!
5 ) Surf's Up
6 ) Sunflower
7 ) Brian Wilson Presents SMiLE
8 ) 20/20
9 ) Brian Wilson
10 ) Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!)

The only other one I'd really miss would be Friends... so I'd smuggle that to the desert island in my pants.

Pity the results aren't shown in popularity order...

Why won't the poll let me vote? Is it because I tried to rate LY at "0"??

Won't let me vote 5 either...

Chuck?!!!

Anyway, IMHO LY is the second-best BB album of all time (after Pet Sounds, and not including the Smile stuff on GV).  It's just a lot of fun and manic energy (well, maybe apart from the first part of Airplane).

Guess I'm totally on the other side from Mr. Knutz, as I love it for the synths (especially the farty basslines), and the great barmy lyrics.
"It seems we have extra-sensory perception!  You can send me thoughts I'd have no objection"
"It's so cold I go brrr"
"And so she needs her falsies on"
"Take it one little inch at a time now... I guess I got a way with girls"
"If Mars had life on it, I might find my wife on it"
"I know it may sound funny but you're the kind of woman who'd make a very sweet wife"
"Pat, pat, pat, pat, pat her on her butt, butt, she's going to sleep be quiet"
"4,5,6, she fell for all my tricks"
This sort of thing should really give the listener the utter creeps, but instead it comes across as being totally honest and genuine.  I think this effect makes LY unique amongst my entire (large-ish) album collection.

And the production may be unconventional, rough & ready, but there are lots of cool and interesting touches (be it the cymbal crash in Johnny Carson, or the harmony vocals at the end of Love Is A Woman).

Only track I skip is Mona - too repetive and boring.  I'd possibly also ditch Good Time as it's obviously out of place (but it should have been released earlier).
