I'm selling a VHS (videotape) copy of the 1971 film "Two-Lane Blacktop" featuring Mssrs. Wilson and Taylor, on ebay. Please check it out -- auction ends this weekend.
Mods: I've never found a "marketplace" section of the message board, so if this is inappropriate, mea culpa.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Wrecking Crew DVD...

Okay, just got "The Wrecking Crew" on DVD via Netflix. "When the Wrecking Crew -- a secret, high-level, government-sponsored hit squad -- is dispatched to clean up the gang-infested streets and take out a violent crime lord, plenty of Hong Kong-style action and martial arts soon follow." First of all, I didn't know Ice-T and Snoop Dogg played on any BB songs. And actually, I didn't hear any BB songs in the whole movie.

Prolly my favorite Beach Boys moments come when I hear a lyric for the umpteenth time -- I mean, for YEARS -- as one thing (or just dit-di-di-dit, like this Darlin' intro) and then I find out it's something else.
And just because the official copyrighted lyrics might say "Keep dreamin' 'bout Darlin'" (and thus are covered by others that way) doesn't mean the original BB recording does. Could be Carl just sings "di-di-dit." (except we now know from the Good Doctor's hi-tech audio that he doesn't.)
So, drbeachboy, what's Dennis singing in the bridge of "He Come Down"? You know what I mean: that "Plain to see. .." part. Put that on your Center-Cut so I can die an untroubled man.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Misheard Vocals

Time to bump up my favorite thread! And add my two cents: Just heard David Cassidy's cover of Darlin', which makes me think the BB intro is "Oh, keep dreamin' of Darlin" which fits with the rest of the lyrics. (Cassidy's intro is actually "keep dreamin' 'bout Darlin") Previous post: In "Shut Down" Mike is worried because the 413 is "hot with ram induction." No clue what that means but these guys do: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chrysler_B_engineThe opening to Help Me Rhonda still gives me trouble. I think that, ever since she put Al down, he's been "out toolin' in my head." Toolin' fits well -- my slang dictionary sez: "To drive an automobile, esp. speedily and with confidence or skill." But "head" isn't a car, it's a guy who likes cars -- "I'm a real cool head." (Lots of other definitions for "head," but let's keep it clean here.) So he IS a head, and he's out toolin', or maybe he's toolin' in his imagination. Dunno. Got too much time on my hands. . .

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Favourite obscure vocal part?

Like “Runners”, I think of “obscure vocals” as meaning hard-to-hear, really mixed way down, almost inaudible, etc. rather than simply vocals that I find beautiful. Love to catch these on the third or fourth or hundredth listen. That doesn’t mean I necessarily think they’re pretty, just obscure – and when you hear them for the first time it does add a little something to the song.
1) “Umm dirty water, umm dirty water” on “Don’t Go Near The Water” under the “Toothpaste and soap” lead vocal.
2) Hal Blaine’s vocal in “Amusement Parks USA” as the carnival barker talking about Stella the Snake Lady: “She’s got the biggest asp. . .”
3) Lots of vocal layers in “Cool Cool Water” to sort out – one being “Drip, drip, drip, drip, drink a little” that’s fairly covered up.
4) The tag of “Funky Pretty” is also multi-layered: “Someone say why, someone say why, why she left, my Pisces lady”
5) Still can’t figure out Dennis’ section in “He Come Down” after the second chorus and before the count-in. Could be anything!
And when Paul sings “Molly lets the children lend a hand”, John and George sing “arm!” and “leg!” Oh, wait, that was some other group.
Lots more.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Your Personal Beach Boys Story

Great thread! Here’s my small contribution:
In 1988 my wife and I were stationed in Germany with the U.S. Army. Cheapskate that I am, I always tried to finagle a free concert ticket over the years, and had another chance in ’88 when the band toured Europe. I free-lanced an article about them for the local paper in Berlin (each major Army post had a community newspaper as well as the Stars and Stripes), which was basically just stuff off the top of my head and didn’t include any interviews with them. But it got me a couple backstage passes.
At that time, I also had contacts with their road manager because I was trying to write a book on the band – namely, a complete compilation of their lyrics (copyright wrangles and the Internet eventually doomed that project). He suggested I meet with him when they were in Berlin for the show.
Now, the Berlin Wall was still up at that time, and there was one little catch -- the Beach Boys were playing in WEST Berlin but were, for some reason, staying in EAST Berlin. So I had to go through Checkpoint Charlie and obviously wasn’t allowed to take a tape recorder or notebooks with me, so after I got through there, I found their hotel and met briefly – maybe for a half an hour – with their manager in the lobby. I remember Bruce Johnston coming down for a moment and the three of us briefly discussed the coming show – I fairly nonchalantly wished him luck, I think, but didn’t get all fan-boy with him.
The concert that night sounded good even from backstage, but I didn’t get any personal contact at that time. It was nice to see it from behind the scenes, though. The audience was about half American and half German but they ALL were singing along.
Been to a lot of Beach Boys concerts over the years (some I did pay for!) and met Al, Mike and Bruce along the way, but the most memorable was going behind the Iron Curtain to see America’s Band.

Hi, folks. Everybody has a first post. This is mine.
An intriguing discussion here! I feel passionate enough about "You Still Believe In Me" from Pet Sounds that I went through the bother of registering, just to cast this great song into the hat. Unsurpassed BW falsetto, echoed by the Group, emotive Tony Asher lyrics; what's not to love?
