You can find him on Facebook: search for Ian Wagner. He and his partner Becky are running a record shop in Greensboro, NC.

Quote from PhilCohen:
I openly asked one of the Hoffman board censors why a post of mine had been deleted. I find great vindication and validation that people continue to participate in Hoffman board threads that I created, and/or that the forum's present-day members to continue to "import" (into the Hoffman forum) quotes from my participation on other forums(such as IMWAN). It confirms that I still have useful information, that I still have something to say that is worth saying.
That wasn't a thread about Jimmy Page by any chance? We were talking about him and I mentioned how Jimmy seemed to have nicked The Kinks track "Revenge" and turned it into "She Just Satisfies" (Jimmy's first single). I remember the thread got destroyed for some reason and I wondered at the time what had happened. (I thought a "gort" became afraid of a Jimmy Page law-suit or something!!).

At any rate, good to see you here, PhilCohen. The rumoured "SMiLE" release has rekindled my interest in this board.

Absolutely! George wrote "Not Guilty" as an answer to "Sexy Sadie" and he wrote "Wah Wah" after he stormed out of the "Get Back" sessions. (When George left the studio that day, Yoko sat on George's seat and did some of her wailing with John doing some feedback guitar and a brief version of "A Quick One While He's Away"!).

I wrote my original post with a "bellyful of wine", so I was perhaps less careful with my words than I was with my second post. I didn't mean to convey a direct or specific connection of the Japanese-born Ms Ono with Pakistani immigrants; it takes some lateral thinking to make the connection. I think "No Pakistanis" could well be a swipe at immigration (and by extension, at Yoko, however oblique it may seem). We have to accept and understand that John, Paul and George often wrote songs about themselves and each other, especially in the fractious days before and after the break-up. Paul was prone to send John messages in his songs (or John at least received some of Paul's songs as messages: remember, John took "Hey Jude" very personally, thinking that Paul was writing about him). I wouldn't be surprised if "Teddy Boy" was about John (John was the Teddy Boy of the group and the story told in the song is a bit like John's story, especially his parents separation et cetera). John took "Dear Boy" and "Too Many People" to heart and wrote "How Do You Sleep?" in riposte; Paul wrote the conciliatory "Dear Friend" to stop the cycle of nastiness between the two.

All bollocks? No!
1) "No Pakistanis" is an embryonic version of "Get Back".
2) McCartney is singing with considerable forcefulness at times in the performance, as if making and emphasising a point (he has said in later years that he was singing about the sort of racist treatment that Pakistani and Indian immigrants suffered; this may well be the case). Taken at face value and taken literally though, it sounds like racist hectoring.
3) Yoko was a deeply unpopular person in most corners (i.e. all but John's) of The Beatles' inner sanctum.
4) Paul is known to have made comments about Yoko being an undesirable "Oriental influence" at Beatles sessions: she was a quietly forceful person monopolising John's attentions while the other Beatles were trying to make some music. Paul simply wanted her to get back.
5) John never forgave the racist and sexist attitudes that he felt (and felt is the operative term here) coming from some of his colleagues.
John took certain inferences from "Get Back" (rightly or wrongly); nonetheless he enjoyed playing the familiar version of it (and was proud of his solo on it!)

Macca's most impassioned singing would have to be the embryonic version of "Get Back" when he was singing about not digging "Pakistanis takin' all the peoples jobs, so get back...".  John took the meaning as being about Yoko (she is Asian, and Pakistanis are Asian in UK parlance); 'til his last utterances, John was convinced that Paul had it in for Yoko and that "Get Back" was directed at her.........

Good one, Olivio! What the world needs now is an official SMiLE Sessions DVD-ROM with interactive capability so that people can make their own mix. A software program can be included so that every time you play the disc a completely new mix is created. Very sensible idea (and the appropriate parties will get lots of royalties, as such a disc would sell heaps).
13  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Nuttiest Producer? on: May 12, 2006, 01:31:42 AM
I never understood the deal with Andrew Loog Oldham. Wasn't he their manager who (with no musical background) set himself up as their producer?

Yes

Did he actually DO any production work?

The early sessions were mainly under the engineer's control. ALO thought he was Britain's Phil Spector: some of the stuff on "Metamorphosis" shows this influence.

What value did he add to the stones, their music or their image?

A lot. He had worked with Brian Epstein in a PR capacity and he conceived of The Stones as the bad boy opposites of the (supposedly) clean-cut Beatles

What attracted them to him to begin with?

Hunger....

And why did they end up so upset with him at the end (that they locked him out of the studio when recording) ?

ALO was going quite mad (bi-polar disorder with an amphetamine addiction: bad combination). He felt he couldn't help them (the three main Stones had various drug busts in '67) especially with his own problems getting out of hand.

Was he maybe just a hipster who fast-talked his way into their scene?

To some degree, probably: they were hungry for success and so was he, though.

Was he maybe as annoying as the liner notes he wrote for Metamorphosis and More Hot Rocks?

Another hero of his was/is Anthony Burgess of "A Clockwork Orange" fame: ALO was trying to write like Burgess.

Most Stones books I have seen are fairly mum on the dynamic between him and the stones.

ALO couldn't care less if he saw Mick Jagger again.

Is Loog an actual name?

Yes: he has some Dutch ancestry. The name is Dutch

Check out the Abbeyrd Beatles site for more info: found this interesting piece of info over there.
Update (4/10/06)
The UK Telegraph reports that what is being described as a new Beatles album with "completely new music" will be released in conjunction with the opening of the Cirque show. "It (the show) involves the creation, by the re-mixing and re-mastering of the Beatles' recorded performances, of completely new music, which will be featured in the show, and which should lead to the release of the show album," says Neil Aspinall. The show is said to have access to unreleased, as well as, released Beatles music for use in the production. Paul and Ringo are contributing, but will not appear in it. Neither will Sir George Martin, who is overseeing the music. (Comment: What this sounds like, of course, is the show soundtrack that will, if published indications are correct, include some Beatles music. Whether it will include actual unreleased songs or just unreleased musical fragments isn't known at this stage.

Some of the early copies of Cap Vol 2 that have already been shipped from the manufacturing plant/s only have mono fold-down mixes (prepared in 2006) of the stereo masters for Help and Rubber Soul instead of the true mono mixes done back in the day, so caveat emptor (and instant collectors item for those people into such things).......................

There is a wonderful Moby Grape song, by Bob Mosley called "Bitter Wind".
One of the lyrics goes:
"A man withouyt love is no man at all, but a cold bitter wind passing by......."
Gotta get yourself a Moby Grape comp ("Vintage: The Very Best Of Moby Grape" is a good 'un).

There is a Brian quote (in Gaines' book p.229) where Brian says
"You know, since my father died, it's been a lot different. You know, I feel a lot more ambitious. It really does something to you when your father passes away. Takes a while to get over it, too. I got a new perspective on life. I'm gonna try a little harder now....It's makin' a man outta me".

Hi Alan,
Have you found the Stanley Shapiro/Tandyn Almer/Brian Wilson remakes-of-BBs-classics tapes yet and have you got any interesting news/over-views to share?
Thanks

To me, it always sounds like "Lucy had it all the way, Lucy had it all the way" ad infinitum. Playing it backwards, it sounds like "We'll fcuk you like Superman, we'll fcuk you like Superman" ad infinitum..................
