PMcC, Great feels on this one... ____________________ Hey Paul, you sent me your Psychedelic Garden CD when you submitted your compilation track... It found itself lost among the masses of CDs here... Well I rediscovered it and popped it in, and it's really great...! Groovy and experimental; very musical... I really dig the Eno-esqe textures throughout... If you meant them, then you know what I love... If they were unintentional, then you would love his "Here Come the Warm Jets" "Taking Tiger Mountain" "Another Green World" (etc.etc.)... BP 20to20

Non Smiley Smile Stuff / Smiley Smilers Who Make Music / My new DVD project...

Hi all, I've completed my first DVD project: Making Waves A demonstration of Kymotropic Inventions... Here's a YouTube link to the 2-minute trailer: Making Waves (movie trailer)I made it by feeding sinewave 'compositions' into an X/Y (phase) scope, then videotaping the images... Next, the animated images were run through some old analog video processors for colorizing, then these videos were combined with new music, replacing and/or mixing with the original sinewaves... ____________________________ The music is texturally varied, and bit difficult to assign to any particular culture, region or time... I'll probably be uploading a few of the full-length clips to youtube (average length: 3-4 min. each)... Feel free to 'rate' it or leave comments... Bob Phillips 20to20soundesign MythMathFilms

While yer at it... Don't forget to complete your collection with 'the new' Volume 1, as well... I recently re-mastered the whole CD and I swapped my original submission "Summertime Rules", with the slightly shorter instrumental version "State of Mind"... I think it's a better representation of my composition and it feels like it 'sits better' with the other tracks... So, 'the new' Volume 1 is the definitive version and an all-round better sounding disc well worth downloading... Peace, BP 20to20 PS - Check out the package artwork, too... I have plans to tie in Volume 3 so that the trilogy reflects a little bit of the vibe of the 80's album arc from King Crimson...  {Discipline/Beat/Three of a Perfect Pair}

Thanks to Ken for his FLACtivities... And to all the current and future seeders... I appreciate the efforts to keep this project from being sonically compromised... I know, some MP3s aren't bad, but our music sounds even better as .wavs... _____________________________ Regarding Volume 3 submissions: start working on them now to avoid deadlinitis... Let's shoot informally for around Sept-Oct... ____________________________ Bob Phillips 20to20soundesign

Update: I'm still lagging a bit behind, I got a gig that involved doing a remote recording at a local high school's 'Evening of Jazz'... Three hours of music on a multi-CD set... Lots of editing all of the 'inbetween' stuff out... The kids' parents and grannies are very supportive, though... So far I got orders for 30 sets... I'm doing the graphics and all the disc dupes 'by hand'... At least it'll cover most of the bills for June... I'll be back to our stuff soon... BP PS - I don't think VI & VII will fit on one disc, but oh well...

Ken,
Got the track, can't wait to hear it w/vox...
I like those e-bow textures in there...
Also dig the wide drum spread, but those are loops, right...? __________________________
Definitely, zap another track over for Vol. 2...
Maybe an instrumental, but whatever you think would be best for the Anthology...
Will it be billed as an Otherside track...?
Thanks,
Bob

Ken, That news sounds great...! I missed the chance to hear your track, though... Anywhere else to hear a sample...? ____________________________ From over here, London seems to be really swingin' right now... Bob PS- would any of your outtakes work for Anthology Vol. 2...?

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mono vs. Stereo
|

...plus it presents a challenge, as it can be tough to find space for all your instrumentation without really being able to pan. Actually, when working in mono, you can sweep the pan knob on the individual tracks and you can hear a 'sweet spot' when the track sounds best...basically hearing the phase shifts (even in mono)... Mono mixing like this is best done using only one monitor speaker; turn the other speaker off for best results... Some engineers use this pan-in-mono technique to locate optimal placement of a track first... Then switch back to stereo mixing to apply any eq, compression, fx, etc... Give it a try...
