Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: God Only Knows BBC Music ad

My musical conclusion is: very very good idea, a Pet Sounds tune arranged with SMiLE in mind, but it's too short, it sounds like an advertisement, which it is of course, for the BBC. It could also be a teaser for more. Many comments say they miss stars like Adele or Paul McCartney, so I hope Brian will arrange the last missing verse, or give all of the remaining Beach Boys just a single word, or one big harmony chord (dream on...), that would make a great version someday. My analytical conclusion is simple that the 'peoples choice' for 2014 is GOK as the best song on YouTube. People have TASTE! This video production is stunning, but the old GOK videos got many, many views anyway. My all time faves are from Behind The Sounds: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DVUBpzlELOghttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QCTVcNsJGX0For your interest: these are the the top 15 songs (I put different versions together, all above 0.5 million views) 20 million views: GOK 16: Kokomo (?... never the real BW/BB sound) 13: DWB (that high, a surprise to me) 11: Good Vibes 10: SUSA 9: IGA 8: Barb 6: WIBN 4: C.Girls 3: Sloop 2: FFF 2: IMRoom 2: 409 2: ICHMusic 2: Forever (surprise to me (TV / Stamos link!))

I believe Bruce role as musician is very limited on stage. He's more like a chearleader/crowd pleaser/keep the party going entertainer, and okay, he does a good job with that.
He really is a well trained keyboard player, he knows great styles from the american songbook like Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Gershwin etc, and probably many serious jazz or classical music as well. Very little of this is shown on stage.
I believe he really likes the deep cuts from Pet Sounds , SMiLE and Sunflower. But he's not in a band that focusses on that type of music, although he's part of the F#%ckn Beach Boys. It's the curse of succes of songs like Barbara Ann and Kokomo, you have to play them night after night. So he's pretending party while doing business. [In an interview once he said he would eagerly swap some of the songs with songs by the Beatles.]
If the band would just play things they like themselves as good pieces of music, they would become real musicians again.

More interesting and unusual to me is how he combined instruments ... in this case ('When I Grow Up'), the harmonica and harpsichord blending into one strange sound. I remember when I was younger wondering what this magical 'instrument' was. And then there's Blondie in the 70's with Denise Their version has the same brilliant use of harmonica

Let's not forget about the Four Freshmen influence, although they are more close harmony jazz, than pop. Their use of solo harpsichord ´fills´(only in a few songs, I believe from the mid 50s?) could also have been an influence on Brian. I have some of it on LPs but I can't recall the song titles but when I heard it I immediatly compared it to songs like When I Grow Up. (Even their song titles influenced Brian: In This Whole Wild World, Imagination, We'll Be Together Again etc)

Nice songs with not so great tags: the studio versions of Funky Pretty and Marcella
My tag theory: if it sounds good with only one repeat, it is also good with more repeats.
The last 3 songs of the Surf's Up album (ADITLOAT,TID,SU) are great! The last 3 songs of the Surf's Up album (ADITLOAT,TID,SU) are great! The last 3 songs of the Surf's Up album (ADITLOAT,TID,SU) are great!

There is hardly any guitar on the album, and Brian maybe played a few simple lines? I believe all songwriting and all arrangements were 90-100% Brian's vision. But, to Carl's ears, Brian's vocals were shockingly bad. (imagine Brian's singing on Solar System)
To 'save' the record, Carl probably 1 replaced some of Brian's voice with other voices or 2 overdubbed/mixed some of Brian's with others (but I don't remember such combined vocal lines) or 3 gave Brian some hamburgers to record better vocals again
So Carl's main role was being a 'mixdown producer', sing his parts, and trying to get the best overall vocal blend.
