I guess this kinda fits. It was just uploaded a couple of days ago.

1304 What Happened to DENNIS WILSON? Death Of A BEACH BOY - Jordan The Lion Travel Vlog (5/25/20)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YBN824Qw_eo

Funny enough that video is what got me hunting.  I haven’t posted here since the forum fractured from The Smile Shoppe to smileysmile.  2007 or so!  See a lot of the same handles which is cool though!

Many moons ago I knew Fred Vail - I’m sure he was on the Harmony more than once . I’d love to ask him about it.

Check this vessel  search database:

https://cgmix.uscg.mil/PSIX/PSIXSearch.aspx

Enter “Harmony“ in the Vessel Name field and “1950” in the Year Built field  and you’ll turn up a vessel - Harmony 1950 - same as Dennis’ boat.   Perhaps this is it?

For more info on Harmony’s history (where I got the build year)

http://www.cinetropic.com/blacktop/harmony/one.html

There is also a mention on a Facebook page of all things that a guy sailed on her but her name was changed to Libertine and owned by a guy named Will Stein - take that with a grain of salt of course.

https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.173448396125749.43347.108901685913754&type=3

The Harmony (1950) that comes up in the Coast Guard database is listed as 34.2 ft long.   I don't think that's Denny's boat.  Several sources describe Denny's boat, originally named the Watadori, as 52 ft, while an article in the San Mateo Times from 1952 describes it as a "50 foot ketch."

You’re right the length is certainly incorrect.  It amazes me that a damn nice yacht in its own right that’s pretty identifiable (the bird carving) and belonged to the drummer of one of the most famous bands in rock is this difficult to locate.  Perhaps the additional Inside Pop reels are on board!

I originally was trying to dig up a Hull Identification Number for the Harmony and regardless of name change she should be able to be found.  I’m going to keep looking.

OK, then.

Billboard, August 2nd 1952, carried a special supplement celebrating the 10th anniversary of Capitol Records, and on page 77 of same there's a rundown of the branches of the company. In the Dallas entry is this:

"The promotional interest is reflected in the background of the present branch manager, Richard Rising. Tho' trained as an accountant, he became a New Orleans radio announcer in 1947, then manager of a wired music service. He went on to do promotional work, and eventually selling, for the Capitol distributor in New Orleans before taking the Dallas managership in 1952".

 Grin

I knew you would pull through.  I think the question of Mr. Rising has been laid to rest.  Now Andrew, how about the where abouts of Mr. Mojo Rising?  Evil

taley ho!

Check out the rest of that website - there are letters to and from Rising.

Ah, silly me - they're faked, of course.  In fact, the whole website is a hoax - there never was any Capitol Records. Grin

This internet thing is just shameless, isn't it ?

Actually, I don't exist either.  Shocked

i really have respect for your years of information gathering and knowledge andrew - make no mistake.  gents like yourself have done a massive amount for the factual (as opposed to the yards and yards of fantasy) BB legacy.  i know you're a fella who checks his facts twice.

so being the information gathering sultan you are it should take no less than a wave of your hand to produce something in the vein of a birth certificate, a tombstone photograph or a photo of you, Dick and Murry (all sporting a thumbs up) to bring this long pondered question to a peaceful and gentlemanly close.  The ball is in your court sir.  Tongue

what? ho!

imo your comparisons to support your point are a bit of a stretch man.  carly denise prefers a bit more evidence to substantiate the claim than yourself.  so what?

I do recommend the Great Escape.  Interesting neighborhood near the school.  I picked up several BB albums there a few years back including original vinyl stak o tracs with music inserts.

If you have time there is a lot to do there.  Go to any Nashville tourist website and look around.

if it was the stack-o-tracks that was on the wall behind the counter (it was there a while) i've listened to your record!  i'm really looking forward to this show and the meet and greet at Grimey's the day before!
10  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Ryman performance in November? on: September 25, 2008, 12:18:08 PM
Just got my seats...Center Balcony 3rd row! Cant wait. Anyone got any suggestions for sightseeing downtown? I know for sure that I'm gonna hit Gruhns Guitars and Ernest Tubbs record shop. Any others?

I'm not aware of any great t-shirt shops on 2nd Ave that aren't touristy slogan type places..but hey, I could be wrong.  If you want to go to cool record stores and you have the time I recommend:

The Great Escape (Great Vintage Vinyl/Music Memorabilia)
http://www.thegreatescapeonline.com/

Grimey's (Old/New Vinyl - Check the Just Arrived Bins)
http://www.grimeys.com/

Phonoluxe (Huge Vinyl Selection)

Also, the Country Music Hall of Fame is cool.

Maybe even a few folks from the Beach Boys earlier days might show up at this one..

The Sea Of Tunes 18 bootleg shows Smiley Smiley in a very different light.

So, are SOT and Unsurpassed Masters the same thing?

If we work together we can pull this off. We can't give up. Not when the gold ring is within our grasp.

I guess everyone gave up!  What was the final outcome regarding this?  Or was it just a bunch of dead ends? I know Jasper was spearheading the effort once upon a time.  I just ran into a post on the web regarding his search and it made me think about it.

I agree!  Being a choad is far worse than being a prick.

Yeah, I know the types.  There is always that one (or more) person at your local independent record store.  The last two albums have been great albums but different from the earlier material.  I fall into the camp that they can't sound the same forever and I'm glad they aren't afraid to f*** with the formula.  And for those who long for the older stuff you always have a track or two that has that sound on the recent records (Lord Anthony, Dressed Up In You.)

I'm actually anticipating the new musical "God Help the Girl" that Stuart's writing.  The three demos I've heard from it are really fun.  I actually like the Catherine Ireton chick and the guy from Ladybug Transistor singing on them.

For those who haven't heard them go here:

I guess your comp is good if you're not in the mood to listen to any of the rest of the B&S canon besides the last two albums.  While I like the past two releases I have to say my favorite B&S is "Fold Your Hands.." which seems to be, by far, their most criticized recording..and I'm one of those early fans you so eloquently described.  Also for me the Dog On Wheels/Lazy Line Painter Jane/3.6.9 Seconds of Light EPs are pure magic.  If that makes me a prick then so be it. Roll Eyes

Anyway, I decided to share a comp I made last week for a friend who's had a rough time recently.

Make Your Own Kind of Music - Cass Elliot
My Sad Lonely Eyes - Them
I'll Be Your Mirror - Velvet Underground
D.C.B.A. - Jefferson Airplane
The Scarecrow - Pink Floyd
I'd Love Just Once to See You - Beach Boys
Sarah In Bath - Krystof Komeda (from The Fearless Vampire Killers)
Tears for Affairs - Camera Obscura
Everything That Touches You - The Association
Wednesday Morning, 3. A.M. - S&G
My World Fell Down - Sagittarius
Ford Mustang - Serge Gainsbourg
Trees - Pulp
Der unheimliche Monch - Peter Thomas
Scenic World - Beirut
Dois Mil E um - Os Mutantes
Beginning to See the Light - Velvet Underground
Song For the Asking - S&G

i gotta give some props to The Explorers Club as well.  I saw them this weekend in Nashville and they were super BB influenced...to the point of stupid almost.  But if you put that aside and just listen it's pretty awesome.

Hey joe...your avatar fucking rocks. Grin

What's it from?
19  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: GOK Tag Used in Sam's Club Commercial on: November 30, 2006, 10:23:51 AM
Not really.

But I am curious what makes Sam's Club (Wal Mart) any better than VISA.

They aren't better or worse that VISA.  It just seems the response to the lyric in context to the commercial would be " I'd not be eyeballs in debt with a massive APR."

I do agree it is good for people who go check out what song it is and they are introduced (or reintroduced) to the BB.  Good point.  Who would have given the ok to use it in the commercial and who benefits exactly.  A&M and BW/Tony Asher?
20  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / GOK Tag Used in Sam's Club Commercial on: November 29, 2006, 02:19:04 PM
Has anyone seen this?  I originally thought it was a VISA commercial and was pretty pissed about it but then noticed it was for Sam's Club which, I suppose, isn't as bad.  I still kinda grimace when I here original versions of songs I love in commercials.  A quote from USA Today:

Quote
TV ads and companion print ads will feature Sam's Club shoppers showing off some offbeat finds, such as a supersize inflatable snow globe for a Florida couple, a hot dog roaster for a society woman and flat-screen TV for a young man who watches shark shows from his bathtub. The track for the TV ads: God Only Knows by the Beach Boys.

For the whole story go here: http://www.usatoday.com/money/industries/retail/2006-11-22-sams-club-usat_x.htm

Any thoughts on the original tag being used???

The Bryon Preiss book made reference to Brian playing 'Johnny Carson' with his guests of the time, that is playing at being Carson and interviewing them with his new toy.

Jesus, I'd like to see that.  I'd bet beans he had Mike Vosse in the co-chair. "Hi-ooooooo!, Yyyesss!" LOL
24  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian article on: September 08, 2006, 07:27:45 AM
well I did have a post here but this discussion will never be resolved and it seems pointless to perpetuate it.  pm me if you give a flip about reading it...which I doubt anyone does.
25  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian article on: September 07, 2006, 10:36:10 AM
Brian is the whole f'n show and if he didn't want to be there, he could make it painfully obvious to everyone that he didn't want to be there. So I don't buy the whole 'Melinda is forcing Brian to do things he doesn't want to do' stuff.

To my eyes it was "painfully obvious" he didn't want to be at that first Smile show in London. Didn't want to do it long before in rehearsals either...at least that's the way it seemed on the doc. Guess David and Mel know best though.
