Unless Taylor Swift is recording/touring with them or dating one of their grandkids, I doubt new fans will care about The Beach Boys.
Jon Stebbins said it best regarding the delayed release of the feel flows set. Look at the history of the band, the answer is obvious. Finding a way to f*** up a beautiful thing. It's in the DNA of the Beach Boys. Sadly this documentary was no exception.

I think there are a lot of things that screwed the beach boys, especially in the long run, which is why we’re still talking about it to this day. But there’s a few that stick out for me , First being capital records I feel ever since the Beatles came they Just put the beach boys on the back burner. 2nd was withdrawing from Monterey Festival. Third being the endless summer release yes it brought them back to the top but at what cost?

Just watched. It’s what I was expecting. Definitely a mixed bag and then some. Disappointment is to be expected when you’re a hard-core Beach Boys fan. Definitely not definitive, but whatever. This is what happens when you match Disney with a Director who probably is not a true beach boys fan. We need people like Alan Boyd, Howie Edelson at the helm. This should’ve been like a 7 to 10 part series with each hour or two focusing on 4-5 years and stuff like that it would’ve been more Focused and direct in my opinion. I’ll stick with the E! True Hollywood Story, The Endless Harmony Documentary, Brian Wilson Songwriter and Dennis Wilson The Real Beach Boy.

I can't recall if it was Jerry who got very emotional over Sunflower in a Beach Boys documentary
Fred Vail. When he went into the radio station and asked the promoter and his old friend to play add some music to your day or whatever it was and the guy looked at him and said the beach boys aren’t hip anymore which is when Fred Val got emotional

That’s a pretty odd choice to promote the set ... a 15 Big Ones-era live track w the horns, etc? Not ‘69-‘71 era, and not really one of their better live performances or periods for live shows either IMO.
Maybe their pushing the release date back in order to change the cover art.

I'm guessing none of you ever saw this group. Only one original member - Paul Revere - even though the other guys were all in the band for 20+ years - some right up to Paul's death in 2014. I constantly see complaining on facebook about "that's not the original group". The funny thing about that is, the people who they think of as the original Raiders were not, they just happened to be the guys who were in the band when they made it big in the mid 60's. The original guys were from Caldwell, Idaho, and started in 1958. Paul was drafted in 1961, the group broke up, then he put together a new band in 1962. Aw, but who cares about details like that, it's more fun just to complain a lot on social media.
Well you said it though- it’s about who the public knows. That group did not include the guy who sang the hits. Reminds me of the Grass Roots ... the original “band” was basically PF Sloan, then they hired an SF group to be the band, then fired them and hired a new group of guys- who became famous. I think there have been like 50 guys in that “band” since, and somehow “they’re” still touring- with no one who has any affiliation to anyone resembling an original member or original recording. Also Blood, Sweat and Tears Foreigner Lynyrd Skynyrd

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Best point in time to break up-if any-to maximize the group's critical standing?

I think most people might point to the tarmac incident of 1977 since following that they really became an oldies band that put out a couple more albums that did nothing and failed to enhance their critical reputation.
What was the incident? There was a massive fight within the band on Al’s birthday. Mike and Al were jealous of the response to POB. Al told Dennis the band didn’t need them now that Dennis had a solo career. Dennis told Al he could only play four chords. They split up for two weeks, until Mike was given Brian’s vote. Dennis was also told in this time he’d be fired if he did a POB solo tour (which Carl was going to join him for). A minor compromise was that he was allowed to play a couple POB songs in the next few BB shows. Ooh yea totally forgot about this, thank you. Does anyone know of any fist fights between members? Besides Mike and Dennis

Thank you all for the information, I know a lot about the beach boys considering they are my favorite band but this subject matter I didn’t know much about.
I do think burial at sea made the most sense. Dennis was the child of the sea. He was born near it, lived it, sang about it, and sadly died in it. Then was buried in it. His life came full circle.
We love and miss you DW. Dennis from Venice!!
