2  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Smile songs that wouldn't have been out of place on Pet Sounds, and vice versa on: November 08, 2011, 01:17:45 PM
The ones that don't feel to out of place imo are the ones recorded at the beginning so Good Vibrations early Wonderful, Windchimes and Look. Conversely could any Pet Sounds songs exist within Smile? Maybe the I Just Wasn't Made For These Times track? Trombone Dixie?
There's something whimsical about "Trombone Dixie" that would probably make it fit right in on "Pet Sounds".

On the other hand, I can't hear any "SMiLE" songs, with the exception of "Good Vibrations"--and that's just a big maybe--fitting in on "Pet Sounds". Musically, "Wonderful" is a nice link between the two records, but lyrically it would have felt very out of place.
3  Smiley Smile Stuff / Brian Wilson Solo Albums / Re: In The Key Of Disney on: November 02, 2011, 11:23:40 PM
Very enjoyable album overall. Just a few observations:

* Definite highlight are "Baby Mine", "Kiss the Girl", and "Stay Awake". Closing it all out with "When You Wish Upon a Star" is simply perfect. The acapella "Our Prayer"-esque opening is stunning and I'd say the closest the Wondermints have ever sounded to the actual Boys.

* "Bare Necessities" is a lot of fun.

* I've never seen "Pocahontas" and "Colors of the Wind" was never a song I gave much thought to, but Brian really does a fine job with it. His voice hasn't sounded better in years.

* As much as I enjoy "The Lion King", I really wish we hadn't gotten TWO numbers from this film. There are over seventy-five years of Disney music from which to choose and it's kind of a crime that two of the eleven tracks on this record are occupied by songs from the same film.

* I miss the little riff right after the chorus of the film version of "I Just Can't Wait to Be King". Also, I think the song is a bit too high for Brian to sing at this point in his life. Nevertheless, if I had to keep only one of the two "Lion King" numbers, it would be this one. "Can You Feel The Love Tonight", on the other hand, just sort of plods along for four minutes and doesn't feel different enough from the far superior Elton John version.

* Brian does a commendable job with "We Belong Together" but I can't help but think that this song's spot on the record would be better served by the inclusion of a more memorable Disney number. Again, it's underwhelming to get two songs from the same film/film series. The song is fun and catchy but by no means a 'classic'.

* "Peace on Earth" and "A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes" are beautifully done and there's no good reason why they didn't make the record. As it is, at eleven tracks, and given the vast, vast wealth of source material, I feel shortchanged.

All in all, a very pleasant record. Brian excels at the slower numbers and, with the exception of "Colors of the Wind", sounds far more comfortable singing the older songs. Some of the track selection is suspect, and the album is far too short, but it is nonetheless a worthy addition to Brian's discography.

Does anyone know what, if any, tracks were recorded but left off the album when the tracklist was finalized? I've been getting into BW's solo albums lately and I've been making custom tracklists so I was curious.

I know there's a very special "flow" to "TLOS," but has anyone attempted to construct a new tracklist using these bonus tracks?

What was the new bridge like; is this known?

What do you mean by 'transitional recording'?
8  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / BB re-attempted "In the Back of My Mind" in 1976? on: April 14, 2009, 10:55:32 PM
Anyone else know about this? I was recently looking through my copy of "The Beach Boys: A Definitive Diary" and on page 368, it says that Brian recorded a new take on this song with a "newly composed bridge." Has anyone ever heard this? Any other details on it?
9  Smiley Smile Stuff / The Beach Boys Media / Has anyone reconstructed the old SMiLE recordings with the 2004 version? on: July 08, 2008, 11:07:41 AM
Hi everyone, I'm new to these boards and I was wondering if anyone had ever taken the original SMiLE recordings and sequenced them in the same order as Brian's 2004 version. If so, is there anywhere I can go to download this?

Thanks!  Smiley
