1  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Where does "Carl and the Passions - 'So Tough' " rank? on: September 09, 2009, 04:10:14 PM
Hi all.  I've been doing a lot of talking and writing about "Carl and the Passions - 'So Tough' " lately, and I'd love to see you all weigh in.

Where does "Carl and the Passions" rank on your list of favorite/best Beach Boys albums?

I wouldn't compare it to "Pet Sounds" or even "Today" and I do think "Sunflower" is the quintessential seventies album, but "Carl and the Passions" has to be a contender for next best seventies album, right?  Maybe with "Holland" as a runner up?

Agree / disagree?

My full review of the album is here:  http://laptopsessions.com/archives/1259  -- whether you visit the link or not, I'd love to read what others think!

Awesome -- nice to hear from other fans of mid-eighties Beach Boys!!

Someone told me that the link to the "Passing Friend" video wasn't working, so I fixed it.

Here it is again:

That would be sooo much fun!  I'll have to run that one past Jim.  And thank you, Aegir, for being one of those Beach Boys fans like myself!  :-)

Hi everyone,

I haven't posted for quite some time, but I can't remain silent any longer.  I just recorded a Beach Boys song for the blog that I contribute to.

Which song?

Well, here goes... "Passing Friend" from the self-titled 1985 album.

Now, I know what you're thinking.  But, if you'd like to hear a stripped down version, are looking for a hearty belly laugh, and/or actually like 1985, then please feel free to click away below:

http://laptopsessions.com/archives/1188

Summer is here - it's the best time to listen to the "Keeping the Summer Alive/1985" two-fer -- and I know, I know... please send complaints about my taste care of Chris Moore @ the Laptop Sessions.  lol   Grin

Take care,

- Chris

Finally, a little love for Dennis...

"Well, do you?"  --  That's how Jim Fusco begins his new cover of this classic Beach Boys song.

If you're interested in hearing a pretty decent acoustic version, click below:

It just makes you want to sing "ssskiss me, baby, I'm your lovin' man!"  lol

Thanks for watching!  I'm glad you liked the videos.  They're first and foremost the handiwork of my friend Jim (the one on the left singing lead).

Take care!

All right, I'm hoping not to get laughed off the forum here...

Anyone interested in hearing a good "Livin' With A Heartache" (Eighties Beach Boys) cover, click here:

Love that song!!

That is sooo cool!  I just found a video of that performance on YouTube a while back! (sadly, not the interview, though)

Yes and no -- Laptop Sessions is a free blog for cover song videos.  Right now, it's just me and few of my friends, but we'd like to have Fridays be "guest" day where someone from the web contributes a video.  We'll only choose one per week, so it's a competition in that sense.

I hope you're interested -- we'd love to have you post on our site!
12  Smiley Smile Stuff / The Beach Boys Media / Calling all musicians! on: December 29, 2008, 07:09:20 PM
Hi everyone -- I wish you all a happy new year!  It's been a while since I've posted on the Smiley Smile message board, as the holidays are in full swing.  But I'd like to pass this message on to all musicians on the board who like playing covers, Beach Boys or otherwise.

Here it is:

Be a guest performer on the Laptop Sessions and have your video seen by hundreds - even thousands - of people!  It's a simple, 2-step process...

First, record a cover song music video (choose any cover!) and post it on YouTube.com.

Second, send an email to admin@laptopsessions.com with:

- the link to your YouTube cover video
- a written description of your video (info about the song, why you recorded it, etc.)
- your contact info

Jim, Chris, and Jeff will choose one video each week, to be posted on Friday.  Don't wait -- submit your Laptop Session today!!

** Please, no more than two (2) submissions per week. **

We're looking forward to including new faces and interpretations!

Take care,

-Chris

Just saw a couple of great music video versions of "Getcha Back" on YouTube -- one a live version, one an actual music video.

What did you guys think of the music video?  Do you think the girl's name is a nod to the song "Wendy"?

Thanks so much for watching and commenting.  It's always intimidating to tackle a cover song from a band as legendary as the Beach Boys!  :-)

I'm sorry to post again on what is essentially a link, but I forgot to share the set list.  The Brian Wilson show was part of a "Greatest Hits" tour, and he played soooo many of their greatest songs, I felt like I had walked into a bona fide Beach Boys concert!

Brian Wilson Set List - LIVE 7/16/2008

Once again, I'm just on such a Beach Boys and Brian Wilson high, that I have to share these.  Does anyone know where I can find a list of recent BB and BW set lists?

Thanks!
-Chris

Hi all!  I just posted a review and the setlist for the 7/16 Brian Wilson show in Torrington, CT.  It was lots of fun and interesting, and I hope you'll share your experiences with Beach Boys or Brian concerts on my site.

Hi all,

If you're a fan of seventies Beach Boys albums, and Dennis' solo record in particular, you should check out this featured video at the Laptop Sessions acoustic cover song music blog:

"You and I" (Dennis Wilson cover)

Is anyone else still enjoying the Pacific Ocean Blue re-release?  :-)

Take care!
