1  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike's band on: November 24, 2015, 06:28:36 AM
I) I'm not one to post a lot, but I do enjoy reading other people's thoughts.
II) This is made impossible here by people who post many times a day but seem to have nothing to contribute.
III) The few other messageboards I frequent are nothing like this mainly due to strong moderators.
IV) I end up only reading posts by a few people (c-man, Desper, Ian, AGD, Totten & Linett when they show up...)
----a) Also posts by other long-timers who I remember from other places (Cam Mott, that random mix of characters that Dauber uses...)
V) I'm sure I'm missing many thoughtful & intelligent posts from others but it's not worth grinding through the chaff.
VI) All I want is a place where reasonable people can exchange their opinions, thoughts, ideas, discoveries, etc. Can someone point me to such a place?
2  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Okie From Muskogee on: February 03, 2015, 07:35:48 AM
I think this is one of the cleverest covers they did in the sense of using a cover to convey a message - in this instance a sly acknowledgement of their perceived squareness and how they'd outgrown that old image.

Is the first instance of them covering this song at the Grateful Dead gig? Who's idea was it to cover the song - theirs or the Dead's? If it was theirs, was it a Rieley suggestion?
Peter Ames Carlin (p157) gives the impression that the BB had played it before then:

"But the Beach Boys stuck it out [the heckllng], and ... the two bands came together in a way that was both unexpected and yet entirely right. The moment began with the first notes of 'Okie From Muskogee', which the Beach Boys had taken to using as a subtle commentary on their own retro image and, implicitly, the far more decadent reality beneath it."

They definitely played "Okie" at their famous Carnegie Hall show on 2/24/71, and probably four days earlier in Santa Monica as well. The famous Grateful Dead show at Fillmore was on 4/27/71.
3  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Thread for various insignificant questions that don't deserve their own thread! on: February 02, 2015, 04:56:17 AM
Can Mike play any other instruments other than the saxophone? http://youtu.be/pv7OtEguam8?t=15m51s This video made me want to know. Any info would be greatly appreciated.  Smiley

Theremin ( think I spelled it wrong) and some Piano.

Mike absolutely cannot play the theremin.
4  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Can Surfin' Safari ever appear in Stereo? on: January 10, 2015, 03:00:05 PM
Re "Land Ahoy" incidentally can someone tell me what the heck "lop a stoy" is?  I keep trying to play "stoy" in Scrabble and it won't fly.

Well, in Illinois
There's a village named Stoy.
But could you be mishearing
The phrase "papa's toy"?

7  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Some random questions from a relatively recent Beach Boys convert on: October 06, 2013, 03:10:16 AM
You people seem highly knowledgeable about the Beach Boys output. I have a good amount of the original albums but not all. I was listening to all of my Beach Boys CD's at work recently and I have some technical questions about various tracks.

"Cassius Love vs. Sonny Wilson"-On the snippets of past songs were they specially recorded for Shut Down Vol. 2 or did Chuck Britz go back to the actual session tapes for those songs and pulled the most funny moments?

The entire session - minus the parts they actually edited out for the released track - can be heard (just once is enough) on a bootleg. Definitely a formal session, recorded 1/13/65

AGD, you have "Cassius" mixed up with "Bull Session" here.
8  Smiley Smile Stuff / 'Rank the Tracks' / Re: Rank the tracks #16: Sunflower on: January 10, 2013, 01:52:57 PM
Alright, I'll play:

1. It's About Time
2. Slip on Through
3. Forever
4. Add Some Music to Your Day
5. Cool Cool Water
6. This Whole World
7. Our Sweet Love
8. All I Wanna Do
9. Tears in the Morning
10. Got To Know the Woman
11. Deidre
12. At My Window

I should say that this is my 2nd favorite Beach Boys album and Deidre would probably be on the top half of almost any other album's list.
9  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: the origin of the surfer accent? on: January 10, 2013, 01:34:54 PM
Yeah, I mean, they all really improve The Times They Are A-Changin'.  Roll Eyes

I mean, I like Party! well enough but lets not go crazy
I know you're a huge fan of Dylan, maybe even the hugest of all the people on this board - that's good, but isn't Al in fact the better singer than Mr. Dylan?

HELL No. And if you go along with the technical argument, then Luciano Pavarotti is better than any of he Beach Boys, so why listen to them?
I would put it this way: Al has a better voice; Bob is a better singer.
10  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / Smiley Smilers Who Make Music / Re: What is Your \ on: January 09, 2013, 08:10:43 PM
I think I'd go with:
The Predatory Wasp Of The Palisades Is Out To Get Us by Sufjan Stevens. I think he's about as close as we're going to get to a young, modern day Brian Wilson. His arrangements are so wonderful, and there's always so much emotion. Definitely a gift to my life.
That is an amazing song.
11  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Films 1971-1976 on: January 06, 2013, 08:29:14 PM
My faves from that time period (in preferential order, roughly):

Love and Death
The Exorcist
Badlands
Aguirre: The Wrath of God
Jaws
Dog Day Afternoon
Barry Lyndon
Nashville
Bananas
California Split
A Real Young Girl
The Last Picture Show
Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Sex...
The Discreet Charm of The Bourgeoisie
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
Bound For Glory

There's a lot I haven't seen.
12  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Your Albums Of The Year on: January 06, 2013, 05:22:57 PM
Alright, I'll go:

The Sound of the Life of the Mind -- Ben Folds Five
Clear Heart Full Eyes -- Craig Finn
Sunken Condos -- Donald Fagen
13  Smiley Smile Stuff / Concert Reviews / Re: Show 40: Darien Lakes Performing Arts Center - Darien Lakes, NY - 6/29/12 on: June 30, 2012, 08:56:58 AM
Thank you, it's been bugging me, too everytime I read it as "Lakes."  I went to high school with a Chris Stowell, whose younger brother was in my grade.  Cool kid.  I wonder if this Chris is his older brother.  Kinda looks like him.

I was on the same little league team with this Chris Stowell one year, I believe. Don't think he has a younger brother.

I was at this show. Enjoyed myself tremendously. Surprised by Brian's singing- his phrasing kind of reminded me of Bob Dylan's nowadays, though with more melody of course. Bruce's voice is starting to get thin on the higher notes, but he still sang well. Is it him doing the falsetto at the end of Fun Fun Fun? Foskett appeared to be away from the mic and I think I've seen him do it at Mike&Bruce shows before.

Anyway, loved the show. May post more later.

Why would you want to watch a pile of reeking excrement like that ?  Huh

Guy who played Murry was really good.

Basically, I'm waiting for someone to tell me it's a good idea to email Dan Kessel...  I need encouragement.

Do it! The worst that can happen is that you'll be ignored.

18  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Which \ on: July 23, 2011, 07:50:49 AM
... broken up by time?

Sample of the most awesome version of what I'm thinking.

0:00 - 0:14 - 5/17/66 - Western Recorders - Session #12 (Take #4)

Oddly, I was asking someone about this a while back, and if I can find what they said in the mess that is my desktop, I'll tell you, but one thing I do recall: although there's no disputing Carol Kaye was on several sessions for the track, it's 99% likely that she's not actually on the released version.

I think that she actually is on the fade of the song, from ~3:27 on.

C-man has done the definitive work on this.

I have that essay somewhere and can dig it out at some point if C-man doesn't mind.
19  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: hi there on: June 22, 2011, 06:18:04 PM
I had an epiphany when I found out that the boys themselves were the core band on tracks like "Then I Kissed Her" -- I think examples like that track say it all.

Um... none of the band play a note on "Then I Kissed Her". Sorry.
Andrew, Andrew...stop perpetuating the debunked myths!! Musicians on "Then I Kissed Her" are Brian (piano, bass), Dennis (drums), Carl (guitars), Bruce (organ)

Interesting - AFM sheet I've seen must be for an overdub session. Mea culpa.

Could you be thinking about the April 16th session for "untitled ballad"? I know it's supposed to be a Then I Kissed Her session, but Then I Kissed Her was not exactly untitled at that time, nor a ballad.
20  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / help with recording dates on: January 13, 2011, 07:10:16 AM
I've been snowed in the last couple of days and I've been spending some of my time sorting through my Beach Boys music... I've been able to find recording dates for almost everything I have but I've been stumped on the following:

KOMA
Good Vibrations (Free Jazz Improv)
unk. piano intermezzo
the Caroline No Radio Promos
God Only Knows (early rehearsal)
Jokes & Laughter Pyschedelic Talk
Row Row Row Your Boat
If It Can't Be You

Can anyone help me out?

(And yes, AGD, I've checked your site.)  Smiley
21  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: How good a guitar player was Carl? on: January 03, 2011, 02:18:33 PM
Going back to day one. Given the task of selecting 12 tracks to represent the best of the band's music 1961-1965, how many of us would have chosen the following ?

Surfin' USA
Catch A Wave
Surfer Girl
Little Deuce Coupe
In My Room
Little Honda
Fun, Fun, Fun
The Warmth Of the Sun
Louie Louie
You're So Good To Me
Wendy

Even if all you did was go by chart positions, you'd still get something more representative:

Surfin' Safari
Surfin' USA
Surfer Girl
Be True To Your School
Fun, Fun, Fun
I Get Around
When I Grow Up (To Be A Man)
Dance, Dance, Dance
Do You Wanna Dance
Help Me Rhonda
California Girls
Barbara Ann

Yeah, but if you go with that tracklist, you haven't saved any of their big hits for Vol. 2.

Myth: "Friends of the Beach Boys" was an incredibly funny newsletter...

Fact: Take out the words "incredibly funny" and you are spot-on...
But then it would say:

"Friends of the Beach Boys" was an newsletter.

I've always loved the track to I'm Waiting for the Day.

The censorship is automated--it's not a matter of somebody getting special privileges. Just limitations of the censor.

My point is, if it's OK to intentionally bypass the censor like that (and I assume it's OK, since it's a mod doing it), why bother having it in the first place?
