I'm pretty sure that the rumor that the Beatles somehow heard some Smile tapes in January 1967 has been debunked. Regardless, I find it interesting that the Beatles started recording A Day in the Life on January 19th, 1967, which is shortly after Brian put together a version of H&V incorporating IIGS and a tape explosion. Compare this to A Day in the Life which includes an orchestra playing wildly somewhat mimicking a tape explosion, and especially note Paul's "woke up, got out of bed" section, which is awfully similar to "mornings tumble out of bed". The "woke up" section in A Day in the Life is also similar to IIGS in how it seems unrelated to the rest of the song (unlike the modular approach in "Good Vibrations" where the different sections are more clearly related). I think the most logical explanation for these similarities is "great minds think alike," but...

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Mike posts in a message board???

Check this out, from the comments section about the Bloomington, Illinois Beach Boys concert that happened last night. Look for sgtppr67 just a few comments down... http://www.pantagraph.com/entertainment/go/article_9d5a026c-b3d7-11df-bfc5-001cc4c002e0.html?mode=commentsThis is the first I know of Mike posting on message board (if it's really him). Someone complained about their 10 year old not being able to see at the show because of people standing the whole time in front of them. Here's Mike's ( ) comment: I'm sorry there was a child behind someone enjoying the show the way the want to enjoy it. I'm Mr.Love and the rest of the boys were appreciative of every person that chose to stand up for them. If you come to the show expecting everyone to sit down so your little darling won't miss anything then maybe you should wait a few years to bring them.
Maybe he'll start posting here soon?

So seriously, he wasn't born in Peoria? And is the adoption story also made up? And "Benjamin Baldwin"? That sounds fishy to me.
There was an article last summer in the Lake Oconee Living magazine (forget which month exactly, may have been June) with an interview with one of Bruce's half-sisters here in Georgia. Yes, Bruce was adopted and Baldwin was his original last name. He's apparently related to THE Baldwin family in Georgia (think founding fathers of the USA, not modern actors). And Bruce was born in the metro Chicago area. You do the math. Thanks for that, Emdeeh. Peoria is a good 150 miles from Chicago, so I'm still suspicious about him being born there if his family lived in Chicago, but stranger things have happened. If he was born there, it's possible he lived in the area for a while. I'm interested in hearing more about Bruce's adoption story, it seems like the info out there is pretty sparse right now. Maybe if Bruce ever writes his autobiography ("I Write the Books? lol), we'll get the full scoop

Thanks Andrew. I think you meant "will it play in Peoria?", which is a joke I've heard one too many times growing up around there So seriously, he wasn't born in Peoria? And is the adoption story also made up? And "Benjamin Baldwin"? That sounds fishy to me. Thanks again for any info you can provide. I've been in contact before with the writer of that article, I'm sure he'd like to correct it if he's providing incorrect information.

From the local newspaper as promo for the upcoming show in Bloomington, Illinois this Sunday: http://www.pantagraph.com/entertainment/music/article_024519b6-b06b-11df-bfe1-001cc4c03286.htmlNot too much new, although I love this part: Though Love's publicist requested that he not be asked about Wilson and the reunion, the singer brought up the topic while musing on the 50-year milestone.
He mentions that "Brian and I have had a few conversations about getting together" and seemed a bit more hopeful in casual conversation that something might come of them.
As for Jardine, who left the band in 1998 following Carl's death, "there's a possibility he could join us at the start (of the reunion tour) with Brian."More mixed signals on the reunion... Also, it's interesting that they mention Bruce originally hailing from Peoria, Illinois. I have never heard a single mention of this from any Beach Boys historian or Bruce himself (although it's listed on his Wikipedia page, so it must be true, lol). This is a part of Bruce's story that I'd love to know more about. I wonder how much time he spent in Peoria versus California growing up?

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Question for Scott Totten about upcoming Bloomington, IL show

Hi Scott, Sorry it took me so long to reply, I couldn't get into this site for a few weeks for some reason. Thanks so much for asking for requests! I know you guys haven't played it often lately, but I'd love to hear "Warmth of the Sun." Otherwise, "God Only Knows" is always a favorite. My dream song request would be for Mike to sing "All I Wanna Do" from Sunflower. His lead vocals are just fantastic on that one. It's really a crime that the Beach Boys have never ever played that one live (at least according to Eric's Setlist Archive). Here's your chance to make it right Thanks again Scott, see you in Bloomington in August! Chris

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Question for Scott Totten about upcoming Bloomington, IL show
|

Hi Scott,
I just heard that Sunday, 8/29/10, at the U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington, IL has been added to your calendar. Will this show be more of a greatest-hits type show (casino show), or will it be one of your longer theater shows? I wasn't sure since it's in an arena and not a "theater."
I'm excited that you're going to be in my backyard, but it will be a little hard to go to this show without my dad who passed away last March. He became a huge Beach Boys fan after seeing them in concert in 1973 with Blondie and Ricky. After that show, he went to the record store and picked up every Beach Boys album he could get ahold of, including Sunflower, which blew him away. I put on some of his old Beach Boys vinyl one night and have been hooked ever since.
Anyway, thanks for your time, really looking forward to the show!
Chris

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Has anyone met Brian Wilson?

This was at Borders on Michigan Avenue in Chicago around the time Imagination came out. I remember Melinda being there, and also Jim Peterik from the Ides of March was there. It looked like Jim had brought a guitar for Brian to sign! Maybe someone else can elaborate on the Jim Peterik thing. I also remember Dan Addington being there, and I remember Dan talking with Melinda for quite a while. I purchased Imagination at the store, and I also brought my copy of the Pet Sounds box set to sign. I was not allowed by security to shake his hand, but I was able to tell him that "That's Not Me" was my favorite song of his, and that it was a great song. He politely said "thank you", and signed my Pet Sounds Box Set booklet on the front cover near his photo. I still remember that day fondly!

Maybe not a "classic" vocal, but I am still impressed with Brian's vocal on the piano demo version of "Don't Let Her Know She's an Angel" from back in the 80's. I found it on youtube under "Brian Wilson Montage". I always wondered if that was really Brian singing or someone else. If it's really Brian, it's a pretty darn good vocal.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Pet Sounds DCC Gold CD?

Thanks to all for your replies. I definitely learned a great deal about the different versions of Pet Sounds that are out there. I do have the CATP version of Pet Sounds on LP, but my vinyl setup is seriously lacking. Thanks to mypetsounds for linking the Amazon CD's for sale. Those are all a bit out of my price range, so I may take up The Heartical Don on his offer.
Anyway, thanks again.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Pet Sounds DCC Gold CD?
|
on: October 15, 2008, 06:50:15 AM
|
Does anyone out there have a copy of the Pet Sounds DCC Gold CD they'd be willing to sell? Or know of a good place to buy?
To date, the best sounding version of Pet Sounds I've heard was a cassette copy of my dad's vinyl copy, complete with scratches. I've read that the DCC Gold CD comes closest to that warm vinyl sound, and I've just had it with the sound of all of the CD versions (I think I pretty much have them all except the Gold disc). If you can help me out, please PM. Thank you!

Thanks everyone for the replies. I also found the thread that SMiLE-Holland linked to very useful. I wonder what ever happened with this book that was mentioned in the thread from 2 years back? "I know this won't help for this trip, but BettyJo Productions is currently putting together a book on Beach Boys locations and sites for fans trying to get around California to see everything. When it's finished we will be sure to post the info. www.bettyjoproductions.com" Sounded like it would be a great resource for a trip out to California. Maybe I'll contact bettyjoproductions directly to inquire about it. I will definitely check out the free Disney stuff one night while I'm there, and I'm planning on hitting one beach early in the morning, and another at sunset.
