One of the headliners on the front cover. At first I thought, oh wow did they just now catch onto this but then realised it's just in promotion for Mikes book.

I aways hoped Brian would write an autobiography in his own words!! Was so disappointed with that first book. We later find out Brian had practically nothing to do with it. I just really hope we don't find out later that the book wasn't actually written by Brian and it was just taken from a series of interviews Ben Greenman held with him.
I have a feeling this won't be the case, from reading things here and there it sound like the same voice that Brian has in the smileboxset sessions and the linear notes in the 2fers that he wrote. Id be interesting to know what the writing process for the book was like.

Craig (and Billie?), I'm not clear on what is going on here. Are you accusing me of something?

I haven't read the book and don't know of the specific topics guitarfool is talking about but I don't think he is accusing you of anything. All that's being said is Mike's book has some very similar opinions as certain things that some posters have said. Maybe Mike read some of these things and agreed with these opinions and maybe it's just a coincidence.

Haha that should of been the book cover
80  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian And Dennis' Relationship on: June 20, 2016, 09:39:21 PM
I would tend to guess even the Wilson brothers themselves never fully understood the relationship they had with each other, so I can't imagine why anyone else can expect to fully understand it, or to have ever expected any of them to articulate the breadth and quality of their relationships in a quick interview soundbite.

They had a rough family relationship by any apparent measure, then drugs and alcohol complicated it further. Then, egos and artistry added to that. Not to mention HUGE financial factors. All sorts of interlopers (Landy, spouses, friends, etc.). The fact that Brian and Carl remained estranged to some degree *after* Landy was gone and after both remaining brothers were no longer using drugs, speaks a great deal to how complex their relationship had to have been.

The family factor is so huge. Despite the fact that I'm sure Al Jardine and David Marks would be considered "family" by the most inclusive definition among most band members, I think it's also not surprising that it has been David Marks and to some degree Al who have most easily navigated back into working with Brian again. Less baggage. Still a ton (in the case of Al anyway), but without that extra layer of complexity perhaps.

Just to speak to this:  "They had a rough family relationship by any apparent measure, then drugs and alcohol complicated it further. Then, egos and artistry added to that. Not to mention HUGE financial factors. All sorts of interlopers (Landy, spouses, friends, etc.). The fact that Brian and Carl remained estranged to some degree *after* Landy was gone and after both remaining brothers were no longer using drugs, speaks a great deal to how complex their relationship had to have been."

(Not a criticism, Hey Jude, just focusing on a specific here).  I would say that Melinda was very interested in having Brian heal his relationship with his family even before she married him, and that I know directly.  While I wasn't there when the event(s) happened, I understand that before Carl's death, there was a major healing experience between Brian and Carl, and I did see it later in talking to Brian about Carl - there was a real joy.  Unfortunately, Dennis died during the Landy years.  But we all heal in our own ways and time and possibly even in other realms.  I don't claim to know how that works.  I do know that they all loved each other and that Melinda was very interested in helping that experience between them become real.  In this particular case, the spouse was definitely not the interloper/problem.

I am glad to here that. If one believes the theory that stress is a contributor to the onset of cancer than it is possible that the Brian/Landy situation played a role in Carl's illness. He deserved having his relationship with Brian healed before he passed.

I do find Carl the most interesting of the Beach Boys because so little is known about him. He is the Raymond Shaw of the band - Even Mike Love has never uttered a discouraging  word about Carl.

Jerry Schilling has stated throughout the years how much Carl did for Brian. Here's a quote from Jerry that I find interesting from Endless summer quarterly
" I was working with Brian the last year of Carl's life. I was spending a lot of time with Carl, but I was producing the A&E Biography on Brian at the time. Brian would ask " Is Carl going to be ok?" If there is one "beach boy" thing that remains undisclosed in that area it is how difficult it was for Carl to make those decisions"

Not sure what specifically Jerry means. Does he mean Carl was keeping his distance from Brian so not to make it more painful or maybe Carl didn't want to give Brian too much information on his illness.

I'm guessing Row your Boat is played because during the time of Pet Sounds Brian had the Honeys sing it just like the way in his concerts.

I have to admit that I prefer the finished version as the JF rendition was incomplete... ... ...at least by comparison.  Carl saves the song from being the cheese platter you suggest it is OSD.  But w/o him it just doesn't work anywhere near as well.  Check out the live disc from the 50th anniversary tour.  Sorry.  THAT version is nowhere near as good.  [And that was with the surviving Beach Boys.]

It's why the Good Vibrations performance from last weekend was so shockingly good/different.  Jeff Foskett NEVER sounded THAT good...ever.  Not even once.

NOBODY can 'do' the  Carl 'sound'...not even Brian.

Nobody can though I feel Christopher Cross comes the closest to that sound.
Here's Christopher filling in Carl's part

Wish I could help. My guess is it was cancelled because of that reason. Would these dates cross with the story Brian told about being in the hotel room telling the guys he won't be able to tour anymore.

Correctamundo.

Thought so but wasn't sure if I just made that up in my head.
Thanks Andrew

Am I correct in saying Brian played piano and drums on this track?
87  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: A question about Funky Pretty on: April 05, 2016, 06:43:22 AM
but it did take me about as long to work out that meant USA as it did to twig the cover of the album was printed upside down. That is, about five years...

Don't worry your not the only one, took me a very long time until I realised that too

I'm not a fan of the sound quality at the Opera House - its generally too muddy and not loud enough for my taste - it diminishes the live experience.

I agree. This was the first time I've been to the opera house and I was so underwhelmed by the sound system. Your right the sound was just muddy, it was hard to differentiate the instruments, sort of sounded like everything coming out of one speaker.

As for any hiccups Brian made vocally doesnt bother me I'm just happy his here.
I noticed Brian kind of shuffling walking off stage, I hope his back isn't causing too much trouble again.

92  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian playing at a Nilsson session on: March 23, 2016, 01:12:31 AM
I was reading a Harry Nilssom Biography by Alyn Shipton and found a quote from Jimmy Webb. Webb walked into Harry's session for Salmon Falls and found Harry, Van Dyke, Brian, Danny and Dolenz.
It's on page 188

Anyway I'll attached a photo of the quote hopefully it works

Strange but true - I was at grammar school with Alyn Shipton.

Small world

I'll just transcribe it

Jimmy Webb dropped in on the recording:
"Salmon Falls." I remember the night I heard that song, I was shaken by the power of that thing. But this particular night it was chaos. There were steel drums all over the place, and a bunch of saxophone players because he didn't appear to have a clue as to what they were suppose to be doing. Somewhere in the back of the studio Brian Wilson was noodling on a b3 apparently trying to sing da Doo Ron Ron in counterpoint to whatever else was going on, and I don't know what Danny and Micky Dolenz were doing. So this jolly crew is going at it hammers and tongs as I walk into the studio. And I am amazed as I sit down, mouth slightly agape, and watch this for about fifteen or twenty minutes as Van Dyke Parks is trying to hum the parts of the orchestration to the players and keep them all organised. I finally turn to Harry who was sitting next to me and said "Harry, why don't you write this down?" And he turned at me with a look of sublime contempt and said, "You would say that!"

New Study-Video for the Profound Beach Boy Fan

If you are interested in exploring the artfully subtle yet radically complex nature of Brian’s arrangements, Michael’s lyrics, and the resulting group harmonies, then you are invited to experience a new sonic interpretation of the classic hits.

Provided you follow the playback instructions, when finished listening to this Study-Video you will emerge with an expanded appreciation of these familiar melodies and the satisfaction of finally hearing everything the tracks have to offer . . . IMHO

Wow that sounds great!!! Don't know what you did but the vocals sound amazing. I think the bass is pushed forward a little too sounds so good.
Wonderful work!!!! Kind of reminds me of the sound for the vocals in sunflower.

Hi Mr Desper,

http://youtu.be/s7nqaz99_ms

The link above is a track called Sweet and Bitter and says you engineered it along with Brian Carl playing on the track and Mike on lead. Do you recall working on this song ? Says it was during the sunflower/surfs up period. This has been brought up before but nobody's heard of these sessions he's posted (there are 2 others on his channel).

COMMENT:  I remember this song as being a one-day-wonder, coming together in such a short time I almost forget about it. Right now I'm listening through the matrix and leading edge device which is resoling all the encoded spatial sounds still captive, even on the link you sent. Sounds so much better this way, with all the tracks spread out in the panorama so you can hear each one distantly. This was recorded at the height of my microphone array technology development techniques -- between Sunflower and Surf's Up. I should post a study-video of the track ... some day. ~swd

Thank you for answering, was wondering about this song for a while. I'm guessing Don Goldberg was someone they were thinking about for brother records.
