The strange thing is I've always considered Sgt. Pepper's to be one of The Beatles' weaker works. I think Rubber Soul, Revolver, or Abbey Road are far superior. I'm not sure why Sgt. Pepper's is always highlighted - - was it the album cover?
Well, I love all the Beatles' albums, but I tend to agree. Sgt. Pepper simply isn't as masterful as Revolver. The idea that something like 'Being For The Benefit of Mr Kite!' (which I love) is in the same league as 'Cabinessence' is silly, but then of course SMiLE wasn't released, wasn't finished in '67. I still wonder how the album would've fared if it had; methinks SMiLE would have, like Pet Sounds before it, conquered England. In America, though...I dunno, the indelible image of the Beach Boys could theoretically have harmed the album's ascendance. I wonder how many non-Beach Boys fans have picked up the SMiLE box set...

Nice article. There goes that whole argument again of whether Pet Sounds and/or SMiLE is/are better than Sgt. Pepper. It's all opinion (I dunno if I ever gave my 2 cents around here about that, but Pet Sounds is almost twice as good as SMiLE and both are legions beyond Sgt. Pepper, but hey that's just how I feel).
The writer of this article clearly came from a Beatle-loving background first, but I'm glad he gave SMiLE some thought of it's greatness.

I find it fascinating that so many people like 'South American' while I think it's crap. Also find it interesting that so many hate this album. I don't, but the production is just bland.
'Your Imagination', 'She Says That She Needs Me', 'Where Has Love Been' (underrated), 'Cry' and 'Lay Down Burden' are the only real worthwhile songs here. The pointless remakes of two classic BBs tunes are fluffy and alright, but obviously vastly inferior to the originals.
3.5/5.

Love You is a wonderful, grin-inducing album. Exactly why GIOMH doesn't work yet Love You does is a matter of passion, I'd say. Creative spark. Something like that...
My favorite tracks - 'Let Us Go On This Way', 'Roller Skating Child', 'Mona', 'I'll Bet He's Nice' and especially 'The Night Was So Young', but the whole album is quite a trip and one of the very few late-period Beach Boys albums that's a JOY to listen to.
Hmm, I'd say.. a 4 1/2 or so.
schiaffino - Yep, that's Brian singing falsetto on 'Airplane'.

You know, I forgot one. I'd say Surf's Up isn't very cohesive either. Not as bad as Still Cruisin' and of course a much better album, but think about it. When you have 'Student Demonstration Time' jutting up against 'Disney Girls' and 'Feel Flows', it's not exactly of one heart and mind, thematically and musically. But precisely because it's all over the map may be a key to it's quality, I dunno.

Better than the already good BW 88, better than Imagination. Not better than BWPS, but that's like saying a scene-perfect remake of Close Encounters of the Third Kind would be better than, say, Saving Private Ryan.
That Lucky Old Sun consistently impresses me. Sure, 'Mexican Girl' ain't great, but it's not bad either, and what would a BW/BB album be without an odd tune or two (well, Pet Sounds, but that's beside the point)?
A solid, glorious, sun-drenched 5. Brian Wilson has come home.

i know but it doesn't make it right. Imagine people who wanna buy a collection of great Beach Boys classic hits. They're sure as hell gonna want 'the Warmth of the Sun' over 'Getcha Back'. They won't even know wtf 'Getcha Back' is and, if they have ears, will note that it's a terrible song.

CIFOTM >> Little Bird
Really? Never heard that before. Sarcasm? Relisten to Little Bird and see if you can spot it. Once you hear it, you'll know - and you'll never unhear it! Are you referring to the "na na na" harmonies sounding like the piano melody? I'm lost, sorry. My ears must not be working today. No. It starts in the part where the group vocals come in...."little bird up in a tree, came down and sang a song to me"....There's the same horn line and drum pattern, EXACTLY, as in Child. Ooh.. you're right. Jesus, I must be deaf. Good find.
