I love Jimi, and never gave a damn whether he liked the Beach Boys or not. Jim Morrison was a fan though, which i think is awesome.
602  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: great article about Smile on popmatters on: August 27, 2012, 07:40:08 PM
The strange thing is I've always considered Sgt. Pepper's to be one of The Beatles' weaker works. I think Rubber Soul, Revolver, or Abbey Road are far superior. I'm not sure why Sgt. Pepper's is always highlighted - - was it the album cover?

Well, I love all the Beatles' albums, but I tend to agree. Sgt. Pepper simply isn't as masterful as Revolver.

The idea that something like 'Being For The Benefit of Mr Kite!' (which I love) is in the same league as 'Cabinessence' is silly, but then of course SMiLE wasn't released, wasn't finished in '67. I still wonder how the album would've fared if it had; methinks SMiLE would have, like Pet Sounds before it, conquered England. In America, though...I dunno, the indelible image of the Beach Boys could theoretically have harmed the album's ascendance. I wonder how many non-Beach Boys fans have picked up the SMiLE box set...

Nice article. There goes that whole argument again of  whether Pet Sounds and/or SMiLE is/are better than Sgt. Pepper. It's all opinion (I dunno if I ever gave my 2 cents around here about that, but Pet Sounds is almost twice as good as SMiLE and both are legions beyond Sgt. Pepper, but hey that's just how I feel).

The writer of this article clearly came from a Beatle-loving background first, but I'm glad he gave SMiLE some thought of it's greatness.

Duophonic. And soooo inferior to mono. :/
605  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Why does Brian like the number five? on: August 26, 2012, 11:27:18 AM
Most of the classic 1960s Beach Boys Capitol singles begin the with prefix of 5.

One of Brian's favorite albums is Four Freshmen and Five Trombones.
606  Smiley Smile Stuff / Brian Wilson Solo Albums / Re: Imagination on: August 25, 2012, 08:56:01 AM
I find it fascinating that so many people like 'South American' while I think it's crap. Also find it interesting that so many hate this album. I don't, but the production is just bland.

'Your Imagination', 'She Says That She Needs Me', 'Where Has Love Been' (underrated), 'Cry' and 'Lay Down Burden' are the only real worthwhile songs here. The pointless remakes of two classic BBs tunes are fluffy and alright, but obviously vastly inferior to the originals.

3.5/5.
607  Smiley Smile Stuff / 1970's Beach Boys Albums / Re: The Beach Boys Love You on: August 23, 2012, 09:41:25 PM
Love You is a wonderful, grin-inducing album. Exactly why GIOMH doesn't work yet Love You does is a matter of passion, I'd say. Creative spark. Something like that...

My favorite tracks - 'Let Us Go On This Way', 'Roller Skating Child', 'Mona', 'I'll Bet He's Nice' and especially 'The Night Was So Young', but the whole album is quite a trip and one of the very few late-period Beach Boys albums that's a JOY to listen to.

Hmm, I'd say.. a 4 1/2 or so.

schiaffino - Yep, that's Brian singing falsetto on 'Airplane'.

Yeah but Mike's not about to put a swastika on his forehead; might draw too much attention to the balding.
609  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Most/Least Cohesive BB album on: August 23, 2012, 09:30:15 PM
You know, I forgot one. I'd say Surf's Up isn't very cohesive either. Not as bad as Still Cruisin' and of course a much better album, but think about it. When you have 'Student Demonstration Time' jutting up against 'Disney Girls' and 'Feel Flows', it's not exactly of one heart and mind, thematically and musically. But precisely because it's all over the map may be a key to it's quality, I dunno.
610  Smiley Smile Stuff / The Beach Boys Media / South Park Beach Boys...revisited on: August 23, 2012, 09:12:37 PM
Back in 2008, I posted some images of South Park-style Beach Boys. It was fun Smiley

Among them, I did a Beach Boys now (as of 2008). For some reason, I neglected to include David Marks.
So, what with the reunion and all, I present you the Beach Boys 2012.

And as I said in the original thread, try it yourself - it's fun!

611  Smiley Smile Stuff / Brian Wilson Solo Albums / Re: That Lucky Old Sun on: August 23, 2012, 07:26:34 PM
Better than the already good BW 88, better than Imagination. Not better than BWPS, but that's like saying a scene-perfect remake of Close Encounters of the Third Kind would be better than, say, Saving Private Ryan.

That Lucky Old Sun consistently impresses me. Sure, 'Mexican Girl' ain't great, but it's not bad either, and what would a BW/BB album be without an odd tune or two (well, Pet Sounds, but that's beside the point)?

A solid, glorious, sun-drenched 5. Brian Wilson has come home.
612  Smiley Smile Stuff / 1980's Beach Boys Albums / Re: Made In USA on: August 23, 2012, 07:21:59 PM
i know but it doesn't make it right. Imagine people who wanna buy a collection of great Beach Boys classic hits. They're sure as hell gonna want 'the Warmth of the Sun' over 'Getcha Back'. They won't even know wtf 'Getcha Back' is and, if they have ears, will note that it's a terrible song.
613  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The hipness image of the Beach Boys on: August 23, 2012, 06:22:51 PM
I wonder if much of why we love the Beach Boys...is deeply rooted in the band being so square and un-hip in the first place.
This explains my love for The Beach Boys Love You.

Fuzzy organ speaker?
615  Smiley Smile Stuff / 1980's Beach Boys Albums / Re: Made In USA on: August 23, 2012, 03:01:22 PM
There are worse BBs compilations out there, but it almost brings tears to my eyes that 'Getcha Back' is on here and 'The Warmth of the Sun' isn't. What were they thinking? A 3.

Brian Wilson A&E Biography (1999) for the video section, please.

Like everything else on Wild Honey, it's bitchin'. I love the buzzing bee organ, bleeding through tracks and Brian's high "sleeeeep" vocals over the crowing rooster. Groovy.
618  Smiley Smile Stuff / 1970's Beach Boys Albums / Re: Beach Boys '69 (Beach Boys Live In London) on: August 22, 2012, 12:34:07 PM
I like this live album. Wish there was more to it, but still. The only thing I hate is that the Beach Boys don't play the entirety of 'Wouldn't It Be Nice'. There's no last verse. I skip that track.

'Aren't You Glad' and 'Wake The World' are great to hear live. 4/10
619  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian rehashing music on: August 22, 2012, 11:50:54 AM
Actually, I hear it as

'Love to Say Da Da' ---> 'Whistle In'

So who gets to be the Tesla of rock?

Tesla?
621  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Why is it so hard to get a decent sounding mix of Heroes and Villains? on: August 22, 2012, 07:53:28 AM
Gee, I dunno...I've always like the mono mix and if it's muddy then it more adds to the song than detracts. Though I typically dislike stereo remixes of Brian's '60s classics, I gotta admit the stereo remix sounds pretty fine.

CIFOTM >> Little Bird

Really? Never heard that before.

Sarcasm? Relisten to Little Bird and see if you can spot it. Once you hear it, you'll know - and you'll never unhear it!

Are you referring to the "na na na" harmonies sounding like the piano melody? I'm lost, sorry. My ears must not be working today.

No. It starts in the part where the group vocals come in...."little bird up in a tree, came down and sang a song to me"....There's the same horn line and drum pattern, EXACTLY, as in Child.

Ooh.. you're right. Jesus, I must be deaf. Good find.

624  Smiley Smile Stuff / Book Reviews / Re: Brian Wilson & the Beach Boys: How Deep the Ocean on: August 21, 2012, 07:02:08 PM
One of my favorite Beach Boys books, and one of the first through which I started to understand the character of Brian Wilson. Williams' and Anderle's reversal of opinion on Wild Honey was great, and the box set review from '93 is wondrous.
