The picture was taken in 57-58 and the guy looks late 30s-early 40s which meant he was probably named around 1920 and 'Richard' at that.
Perfectly innocent for the time.

He always kept a eye out for the boys.

Musikk The Flame, The Byrds, The Band, The Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones, They’re all Blondie’s bands! He’s the only person who’s been a member of The Flame, The Byrds, The Beach Boys, The Band and The Rolling Stones. Blondie Chaplin is still touring and recording with The Stones, and has done so since 1994. Blondie Chaplin is from South Africa, (born July 7th 1951) the son of a Zulu princess, and on his father’s side he’s related to his band mate, Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts. Blondie left his native South Africa at 15. The apartheid regime made life tough for a young rock musician, and also for the majority of the population. So Blondie, and his band, The Flame, left for London, where Carl Wilson discovered them during a performance. Wilson signed The Flame to The Beach Boys own record company, Brother Records. After a couple of years in the UK, he was asked to join The Beach Boys as a singer and guitarist, so he headed off to the US, and has lived there ever since. He now resides in Los Angeles, with his wife and daughter. Close to Keith During the late 1980’s, Blondie toured with The Band, replacing some of Richard Manuel’s vocals, and playing guitar. For quite a few years, he’s been a close friend of Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones. Keith included Blondie Chaplin on his very personal reggae project: The Wingless Angels, recorded at Keith’s house in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, and before the 1997/98 “Bridges to Babylon” tour, he was asked to join Keith’s band, The Rolling Stones. And Blondie was happy to! He’s been on every tour and album since then and never missed a gig… He’s popular among the boys and is one of very few people who are great friends with all four Stones. Among Blondie’s favourite things to do is exploring the history of the blues, preferably with connoisseur for the blues, Keith. Shopping for carpets, rugs and kelims is another favourite. All band members are passionate collectors of such items. He was recently in New York, working on material in a recording studio with Keith Richards. The only thing Blondie’s willing to comment on is: “Yeah, we played music and had a few drinks.” They didn’t leave the studio for a week! A new Stones tour of Asia is rumoured to happen late this year, and then there’s rumours of a tour of Europe and the US in 2010, and perhaps the opening show for the London Olympics in 2012 will see the Stones celebrating their 50th anniversary. Solo work Blondie has an interesting solo career and has released three albums, so far. The most recent, “Between Us”, came out in 2006. He’s been doing studio work on his fourth solo album this spring, between recording sessions with some of his band mates, like Ronnie Wood and Bernard Fowler. The new solo album is scheduled for release this summer. Blondie in Norway Blondie Chaplin will be in Norway between June 5th and June 29th. Blondie will be accompanied by Dutch-Norwegian Pieter Kentrop on vocals and guitar. He’ll be performing songs from his solo albums as well as Rolling Stones classics. He has done a couple of shows in Norway previously. Hønefoss – a crowd of 600, sold out 2 weeks in advance. Bekkestua: Onkel Blaa – full house. For more information about Blondie: www.blondiechaplin.com Or: Wikipedia.com The Stones about Blondie: Ronnie Wood: - Blondie’s great, both as a singer and guitar player. He’s very useful when it comes to filling in on some songs. It doesn’t tie us down, it broadens our range. It gives you a new sort of freedom when a defined part of a song is covered by the back up singers or the horns. It gives you the opportunity to find the one exact tone, or a certain riff, because you’re always certain that they’re covering your ass. Charlie Watts: Keith takes things a lot more relaxed. He’s just fine with songs that have been lying there for years, marinating, though he has some recordings with fragments and ideas, that he’s recorded himself or with Blondie Chaplin. They’re usually fantastic, magical little pieces. Wonderful moments.

5160  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: New live Brian EP just released... on: May 26, 2009, 04:17:24 PM
Brian plays the Beach Boys hits because he blew away his best years in what could have been a successful solo career. If McCartney could manage both another band (Wings) and solo to keep in the charts, Paul Simon solo hits,  plus other artists then Brian (clean) could have done the same.

In 1988 at 46 years old it makes great press to launch a solo career but little else.

Haven't you guys learnt anything!

Rule number 1. The hits, nothing but the hits, only the hits, people want to hear hits, summer means hits, hits get released only in summer!

Bring out another Summer compilation of Beach Boys summer hits. Brilliant!!!

Say after me and repeat. 'Don't Fcuk With The Formula'.

....who just happens to be Mike Love! It all makes sense now! Grin

You may have something there. I think this may be Mike talking to Taylor after the gig.

Its all water under the bridge now but this must have been a difficult time for all concerned for obvious reasons. We of course can only speculate what went down between Mike and Al at this time but my take is something like this.
I would not be surprised if Al was unsure, or felt it was inappropriate to be planning any kind of future for the Beach Boys late 97-early 98. he may have thought the time had come to retire the band. To put it another way, he would not commit to the band in 1998.

Bruce has mentioned in the past on the Britain board how dates start to fill early for the following years touring. So late 97 I could well imagine promoters wanting to book the BBs for the following summer. Mike could have turned them down flat, or say he could not legally provide 'The Beach Boys', but could provide a form of the band under another name.

Fast forward spring 98. Mike has a reasonable number of dates confirmed without using the BBs title. Bruce and established BB band members willing to tour along with Dave.

So the cash cow rolled on in 98 and the use later of the BBs title increased it. I don't recall hearing of many staying away from the shows because there was no Al Jardine so why would Mike want to bring him back?

Total speculation again.

Out of interest Carrie, who would have made the call to lip-synch the show?

I have never seen the superbowl performance but all the names mentioned plus I guess sidemen should have been able to do the songs live surely?

Well I have found 3 BBFUN with mentions of a 20th gig.

1 August issue. Mike mentions a show being planned. No venue at time but all ex band members to be invited plus the Captain and Tennille plus Sonny and Cher.

2 November issue. Al and Brian confirm gig New Years eve at Inglewood. (Not Long Beach as I had thought.) Two stage sets planned. One a beach scene and the other a giant turntable. Both to be used on tour in 81 but one at a time.

3 February issue. Short mention of Star on Hollywood Blvd December 30 plus gig the next evening. Mention of 3 songs seldom performed live at the time. '409', 'Surfin Safari' and 'I Can Hear Music'. Jan and Dean plus American Spring joined in at the end of the show. A few photos of the gig are of poor quality and 'reprinted by permission of Brother Records'. The usual concert shots but one of Al wearing a early BBs striped shirt of interest. One long distance shot of private party held at the Berwin Entertainment Center, (now The Hollywood Athletic Club I believe) in a giant pool. No individual members or associates in view, except Ed Roach naked in a palm tree! (ok...I made that last part up Grin )

No mention anywhere of gig or party being filmed.

I also recall reading something about why the gig was happening in New Year 1980 and I think Mike mentions the band may have broken up by New Year 1981. I guess with Carl planning his album doubts must have been raised about The Beach Boys future.

As an aside. One old issue mentions Dennis hurting his hand playing drums during a concert in Detroit during 1980. Any more details Ed.

Somewhere I have a old BBFUN news-letter with a review I think of a 20th anniversary gig in Long Beach with a after show party in a empty pool if my memory is correct. This may have been New Year 1980, as I think mention is made of their first gig being New Year 1961 and it not being quite 20 years.

Will dig t out if I can if anyone wants me to.
