there needs to be a more in-depth doco on the BB's covering all aspects of their history

this one just doesnt cut it

Theyve said in many interviews how The Beach Boys were a big influence

Not so much musically, but the fact that they represented California the same way that Kraftwerk wanted to represent Germany

they said something along the lines of "if you wanna know what Califronia was like in the early 60s, just listen to the BBs"

they hoped to give the listeners the same experience of how Germany through their music

Chloe Grace Moretz and Rupert Grint are joining helmer Randall Miller's "The Drummer," an indie music biopic about Beach Boys drummer Dennis Wilson.
Moretz is in final negotiations to play Wilson's daughter Jennifer, who is co-producing the film, along with her half-brother Carl. Grint will play Stan Shapiro, a mail room intern at William Morris, who befriended Wilson during the last few years of the musician's life.

Thesps join previously announced Aaron Eckhart as Wilson and Vera Farmiga, who signed on to play Fleetwood Mac singer-songwriter Christine McVie.
Slated to begin lensing June 15, "The Drummer" centers on the last six years of Wilson's life, before his death in 1983.

Miller is producing with scribe Jody Savin through the pair's Unclaimed Freight Prods. Music industry vet Brad Rosenberger, who brought the project to the filmmakers, also produces.

i agree with Jay - the part with Ed down at the Marina was so sad. I loved the honesty of it though. They did well in telling the desperation of Dennis in those final days.

i thought it was excellent and gave a great insight into DW's life.

the part where hes singing 'YASB' and his voice is shot is heartbreaking

The Beach Boys, flanked by Foster the People and Maroon 5's Adam Levine, are pouring on the harmonies in a rousing run-through of Good Vibrations. After years strained by acrimony and lawsuits, the iconic surf-pop band is having fun, fun, fun.

Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, David Marks and Bruce Johnston are at a CenterStaging studio rehearsing for a pivotal performance, their first with Wilson in more than two decades.

The medley, which includes Beach Boys covers Wouldn't It Be Nice by Foster and Surfer Girl by Maroon 5, is shaping up to be a peak moment at Sunday's Grammy Awards (CBS, 8 p.m. ET/tape delay PT) and a high-profile launch of the band's 50th-anniversary docket.

Wilson, 69, confesses to Grammy butterflies but adds, "It's a happy feeling. We all sound good. The songs are as fresh as the day they were made."

The Beach Boys never won a Grammy (Vibrations lost to the Mamas and the Papas' Monday, Monday, among others, in 1966), nor have they played on the telecast.

No hard feelings, says Love, 70. "It's great that we're regarded highly enough by the powers that be at the Grammys that they want us on the show," he says, relating how a recent re-recording of Do It Again at Capitol Records set the reunion in motion. "Brian told me, 'You sound pretty good for a 70-year-old guy.' It's what we've done all our lives. It's a fantastic milestone, 50 years. The beauty of it is that the songs Brian and I created will outlive us."

The reconciliation "was inevitable, in spite of rumors to the contrary," says Jardine, 69. "There's a tendency for bands to fall apart, but if we can get back together and do it again, anybody can, even in this economy. People need hope and a way out of all this despair. We can bring good vibrations to everybody."

Expect no shortage of drama, entertainment, pop royalty or signature "Grammy moments" of unusual combos during the 3½-hour musical marathon.

The Beach Boys' return is among the biggest attractions in a revue of roughly 22 songs in 18 production numbers that spotlight Adele, Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, Nicki Minaj, Bruno Mars, Taylor Swift, Foo Fighters, Katy Perry, Rihanna, Coldplay and Glen Campbell.

Not a band, but my favourite musician after The Beach Boys is Ronnie James Dio.

His music covered a much larger diversity than many people are aware of, he started off as a Doo-Wop singer in the late 50's with songs such as MISTER MISERY ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_vqJ81gMWg0&feature=related ) and AN ANGEL IS MISSING ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kmbuHKuyDRc&feature=related )

After being in a few bands he started Rainbow with Ritchie Blackmore in the mid 70's, where they took the early Metal sound (basically heavy blues) and added more exotic inspirations darker lyrical inspirations and orchestral elements, most noticeable in songs like STARGAZER ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t6W7jMURpGU )

He later joined Black Sabbath after the departure of Ozzy Osbourne where he was responsible for their Heaven and Hell album (this is the title song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=riwxbh_n_WM )

After he left Black Sabbath he created his own solo band Dio, where despite being a predominately metal band (with hits like Holy Diver, which nearly everyone knows, whether they know it or not, so I wont bother linking), his other influences occasionally came through with tracks like THIS IS YOUR LIFE ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ku--QYJQsPo )

He remained in Dio until his passing in 2010 (with a break in 1991 to rejoin Black Sabbath, and then in the mid 00's to join Heaven and Hell, which was Black Sabbath without having to pay Ozzy royalties)

His diversity is something that I love about his music, not just the range of styles, but the fact he could pull them all off fantastically, I hope that linking some of his music here encourages some people here to listen and maybe discover something they like

The Oscar nominated actress joins Aaron Eckhart in the Beach Boys film and will play singer-songwriter Christine McVie. W2 is co-financing the project and represents international sales.

Production is set to commence in Southern Georgia on Jun 15 to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Beach Boys.

Randall Miller will direct from Jody Savin’s screenplay, which chronicles the last six years of Beach Boys drummer Dennis Wilson’s life. Wilson and McVie had a passionate relationship and served as each other’s muses and confidants.

Farmiga will use her classical piano training in the production and will sing. “She has a number of duets with Eckhart in the film,” Miller said.  The combination of Aaron and Vera will be pure magic.”

For his part, Eckhart is deep into drum training and is also learning piano fundamentals and undergoing vocal training.

Miller and Savin are producing through their Unclaimed Freight Productions label along with Brad Rosenberger, the former svp of Warner-Chappell Music Group who brought the project to the filmmakers.

Gerry DeKlerk and Irene Nelson of Rampart Films serve as executive producers alongside Jim Guercio of Caribou Records and W2 head of sales Julie Sultan.

i caught 'Heaven & Hell' live a few years ago and i gotta say it was one of the best sounding gigs i had ever been to

Ronnie James Dio wouldve been around 65 and his voice sounded amazing. I didnt sound all that different to his recordings in the 70's/80s. Cant believe that after all these years his voice still stood up like it did.

Not to mention Tony Iommi's brilliant riffs bludgeoning our ears. The sound was clear and for guys in their 60s it was a show to behold.

Shame RJD is not around to do another 'H&H' album. For my mind, they were just as good as Sabbath, if not better.

Ive only recently gotten into The Beach Boys (last 18 months) after having known about them, and their music for quite a while. But its only been the last couple of years that the music actually got to me and ive now grown to love them. Theyre now easily one of my top 5 all time favourite bands.

I started off in the early 90s listening to grunge/metal (Alice In Chains is one of my other all time fav bands) and lots of hip hop and 70s funk (specifically P-Funk). My older brother is a huge BB’s fan but I would never really pay attention when he played their music. I guess I just didn’t get it at the time. As time wore on I was getting into more and more metal bands (stoner, doom & funeral doom) until I stumbled across a French band called AIR. I loved their sound and music. Reading interviews they would say how much The BB’s and BW were an influence on them but still I kept away from the BB’s.

Anyway I loved watching music docos, and I caught ‘Endless Harmony’ in the early 00’s. The story really fascinated me and the ‘Til I Die clip during one of the BW montages stopped me in my tracks – I loved that song (even though it was the alt mix). But again it kinda stopped there. I didn’t really look into more of their music.

Fast forward a few years and I D/L some of my brothers BB’s CD’s onto my iTunes which is where they stayed until one day I had my library on shuffle. I was sitting at home, in the back yard on a warm summer’s afternoon, smoking some green when ‘All I Wanna Do’ came on . Hearing those voices, especially the last minute of the song just did something for me. I cant exactly say what, but when Brian sang ‘My love is burning brightly….’ it made me literally sit up. It sent shivers down my spine. I thought it was one of the most beautiful things I had heard. I mustve listened to that one track 10 times in a row that afternoon and to this day i absolutely adore that track.

You know those moments when a bands music has been in front of you all the time and you hardly notice it, yet one day it just clicks? It was like that. So I went and started listening to all the other albums i had. since then ive been hooked.

Now im not really into the early stuff. I understand this era is important to the sound of the BB’s but the whole cars and surf songs didn’t move me as much as the later stuff which to me seems more emotional (which is what i love).

I now love the BB's. i listen to them everyday. One gripe I do have though is that for me, most of the albums are too inconsistent. Youd have 5-6 great songs mixed in with 3-4 songs that I routinely skip. And reading some of the books about the BB’s you see how (for me anyway) disturbing their story actually is. i guess thats part of the charm. The darkness behind the sunny/smiley exterior.

After hearing the news about Tony Iommi i had a Black Sabbath listening session last night

'National Acrobat' was the Sabbath song that got me into them so i cranked up the stereo, enjoyed some 'sweet leaf' and enjoyed the whole 'Sabbath Bloody Sabbath' album

 

Hi Steven, not sure if your still checking this thread but i just finished reading 'Heroes & Villians' and i just wanna say how much i enjoyed it.

i knew going in that this book focuses more on the 'dirty laundry' aspect of the band but thats exactly what i wanted to read about.

I found myself thinking several times during this book "what the hell are these guys thinking?". You realise just how self destructive they were.
