Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Official Beach Boys 'Smile' - why no mention?!
|

I just noticed, to my complete surprise, that iTunes offers a Beach Boys version of "Smile"... that has apparently been on there since *2006*. How did this slip by unnoticed?!!
For those unaware of its existence like I was, the tracklist is this...
"Main Version" 01) Our Prayer [from "Good Vibrations"] 02) Heroes And Villains ["Smiley Smile" bonus track version] 03) Do You Like Worms? [from "Good Vibrations"] 04) Cabinessence [from "20/20"] 05) Wonderful [from "Good Vibrations"] 06) Surf's Up [from "Surf's Up"] 07) Vegetables [from "Good Vibrations"] 08) Wind Chimes [from "Good Vibrations"] 09) 'Heroes and Villains Intro' [AKA the beginning of 'Mrs O'Leary's Cow', from "Good Vibrations"] 10) I Love To Say Da Da [from "Good Vibrations"] 11) Good Vibrations [from "Smiley Smile"]
"Alternate Version" 12) Our Prayer [from "20/20"] 13) Heroes And Villains [from "Smiley Smile"] 14) Cabinessence [from "Good Vibrations"] 15) Wonderful [from "Smiley Smile"] 16) Surf's Up [from "Good Vibrations"] 17) Vegetables [from "Smiley Smile"] 18) Wind Chimes [from "Smiley Smile"] -> "Fall Breaks and Back To Winter" should be here... nice one, iTunes. 19) Cool Cool Water [from "Good Vibrations"] 20) Good Vibrations ["Smiley Smile" bonus track version] - Why wasn't this used in the other version?! It has the BWPS lyrics!
(You can buy the 'Main' and 'Alternate' versions separately, though I'd think they'd be rather short, or both as one long album.)
How did something as momentous as an official Beach Boys "SMiLE", such as it is, escape into the public without any fanfare???

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Uh... which "Smile" did I buy?

There's several different Beach Boys "Smile" vinyls on eBay at the moment; the ones up for auction I was able to identify as the 3-LP Vigotone version, the fake Brother Records version, and... I can't remember. It was a white label that said "Smile" on it (in the cover font).
But, since those will likely be snapped up as they have about a week left each, I bought one in the 'Buy It Now' section. They gave no tracklist, but it's 1-LP, and the record is on green vinyl.
Does anyone know which version I bought, and what the tracklist is? (It wasn't TOO expensive - 38 bucks or something; I'm just happy to have a vinyl Smile. But I'd like to know which version it is in advance.)

I've sat through worse... case in point:
* Favorite Beach Boys song: "Battle Hymn of the Republic" * Favorite rock album: "The Beat Goes On" by Vanilla Fudge * Favorite movies: "Grease 2" and "Shock Treatment" (yes, the Rocky Horror sequel that, like, 12 people actually enjoy) * Favorite era of Saturday Night Live: 1980-81 * Favorite Pink Floyd album: "Atom Heart Mother"
Get the picture yet? :-P

Really? I was under the impression that the Beach Boys/Jasper Dailey version was most certainly a cover of the Marcels' "Teeter Totter Love"... (Incidentally, the Marcels' seems to be the ONLY version out there... sorry I couldn't substitute something a little more Beach Boys-ish!) I mean, what are the chances of two songs having the same unlikely title?? I'm just sorry I couldn't offer a replacement for "Remember The Zoo", the nonexistent title track... I hate to say that I don't have the talent to fake a Beach Boys song resembling "Tomorrow Never Knows" with animal noises!

Smiley Smile Stuff / The Beach Boys Media / Black sheep... blaaaack sheep...

I'm curious... what does everyone think of "Black Sheep", the Brian Wilson/Smile parody from 'Walk Hard'?
I dunno, I think the guy in the movie was right - that's not a very good song. I think Van Dyke set his sights too high... I mean, it doesn't really have a melody to it, because the key changes every damn line! Perhaps I was just spoiled by the far superior "Pancreas" the previous year, though.
I would recommend seeing this part of the movie in the unrated version though... there's a ton of stuff added to it (including Dewey recording the sounds of his wife giving birth and, for some reason, some random girl's breasts) and it's just brilliant. They even manage to spoof Brian's odd instructions (like Brian wanting the cymbals to 'sound like jewelry'), but I won't spoil that. :-)

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / MP3 of Brian drunk?
|

I found an MP3 (apparently from an album called 'Celebrities Gone Wild') of Brian, seemingly VERY intoxicated, going on this on-stage spiel about "VAN DYKE PARKS IS THE BIGGEST BUTTHOLE!" He then sings a song, and apparently forgets the words...
Does anyone know where in the hell this is from?

Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / My next discography project...

I'd like to take a break from the Beach Boys discography for a little bit, so I'm starting to piece together, in very much the same format, a discography of... wait for it.... SPINAL TAP.
It shouldn't take long; I have all the info, I just have to adapt it for that format. Is there anyone here who would like me to post it when it's finished?

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / My discography - latest revision here!

This is the latest revision of my Beach Boys discography. (I'll post further revisions in this same thread.) http://www.megaupload.com/?d=1LOGZDK4As usual, comments and questions (and especially albums I missed) are appreciated! Incidentally, if anyone's wondering if I'm going to include Glen Campbell in the "solo albums" at one point, the answer is a very large NO. The discography would double in length (and then some), all for a guy who never appeared on a Beach Boys album AS a Beach Boy. (He did session work for "Pet Sounds", but that's not grounds for inclusion... he's not important enough.) Because I feel like if I start getting into 'live-only' Beach Boys, then I'd have to hunt down the recordings of the phony Beach Boys in Mike Love's cheesy touring bands, and that's not worth the trouble, because who cares?

Smiley Smile Stuff / 1960's Beach Boys Albums / Re: Pet Sounds

Two changes to my tracklist - I'm throwing in the Marcels' "Teeter Totter Love" because frankly, I'd hate to have two songs missing. (I doesn't sound THAT far off from an acapella Beach Boys outtake, really...) Also, I wanted to keep the "Smile" version of 'Great Shape' in there, so I made a new intro to 'Poor Old Body'. It's made up of two parts - Brian's piano demo of IIGS, spliced with Purple Chick's version, because Purple Chick's cut off the first couple piano chords. Then, instead of 'I Wanna Be Around', the distortion cuts to the beginning of 'Poor Old Body'. Doesn't sound as bad as you'd think, especially since I made POB mono, bassy, and layered with reverb!
