I hear more natural instruments on Imagination than on the 88 album; the production reminds me a lot of the Don Was produced IJWMFTT soundtrack.
3827  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Carl Wilson Here and Now on: April 24, 2012, 11:08:04 PM
I have the dvd, it is mostly just memories of Carl from his family, friends, musicians, and I find it very enjoyable, and in parts, eye opening. Lots of great stuff on Carl the musician (Gerry Beckley tells a story about Carl retuning a guitar to be just slightly out of tune with another one so that on the recording it will stand out); not much music, unfortunately, other than a couple tribute songs. I'm guessing Billy didn't wanna hassle with getting licensing for songs, but if you're a Carl fan, you will enjoy this.
3828  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Jeffrey Foskett - what's the joke? on: April 24, 2012, 01:43:42 PM
When Jeff screams "GOD!" it sorta reminds me of Carl circa Love You or something. Funny, considering Love You is allegedly hated by Jeff/BW camp. I really hope they don't ignore LY this tour.
I'm sure songs from LY, LA, MIU and SIP will be all over the setlist. "It's a love thing"
3829  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Setlist thoughts... on: April 23, 2012, 11:31:16 PM
I'm gonna be really pissed if they don't do Bah-Bah-Bah, Bah-Bopper Ann.
3830  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: TWGMTR Now Officially Loaded On YouTube on: April 23, 2012, 11:26:54 PM
Sounds like it would not have been out of place on "Imagination" - an album that I am guilty of liking. Yes, Brian, there is one guy out here that enjoyed that album, Joe Thomas be damned! I wasn't expected edgy, alternative music from a middle aged Brian Wilson, and I'm not expecting it now.
3831  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Imagination - why wasn't it a hit? on: April 23, 2012, 02:25:37 PM
I thought with the mob involved, anything could be turned into a hit?
3832  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Jeffrey Foskett - what's the joke? on: April 22, 2012, 10:41:43 PM
First time I ever saw/heard Foskett was the Beach Boys concert after a Seattle Mariners game in 1983. Was impressed with his vocals on The Warmth of the Sun. That was a highlight of the show for me. Never had any problems with his vocals on the various recording projects he's contributed to (Overwhelming World Suite on America's Human Nature album from '98 stands out for me). I admit I was disappointed sometimes at Beach Boys concerts that he would do the guitar solos on some songs, I wanted to hear Carl do them ALL. But apparently Carl did not mind sharing the spotlight with Jeff. Beach Boys/Brian fans are such a hard-to-please group. There's always a bunch of "fans" criticizing every move, whether it be a new (or old) album, a setlist, Mike's wardrobe...whatever. Sometimes it seems as if these guys can never do right by us.
3833  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Combining \ on: April 22, 2012, 10:31:18 PM
I seriously was just thinking about this today. Let's see:

Album title: The Fading Rock Group Revival (I also got a kick out of that  LOL)

Track list:
Side 1:
1. Slip on Through
2. This Whole World
3. Add Some Music to Your Day
4. Our Sweet Love
5. Deirdre
6. Forever

Side 2:
1. Long Promised Road
2. All I Wanna Do
3. Take a Load Off Your Feet
4. Disney Girls (1957)
5. Feel Flows
6. Till I Die

Replace Take a Load Off and the puke-inducing Disney Girls with Cool Cool Water and Surf's Up, and you got yourself a perfect album, my friend!

I like Disney Girls and Take a Load Off Your Feet is not THAT bad.

I took off Cool Cool Water because I really don't like that version and I really don't care for Carl's lead on Surf's Up.
I had to read that last part twice. How could anyone NOT love Carl's vocal on Surf's Up? That's what I missed so much when I heard the BWPS version.
3834  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Imagination - why wasn't it a hit? on: April 22, 2012, 10:22:42 PM
I mean, with the mob involvement of some of the contributers, seems like they could've made a few moves and suddenly, Brian has a #1 album.
3835  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Jeffrey Foskett - what's the joke? on: April 21, 2012, 08:41:40 AM
Why all the hate for Foskett? I admit, I'm not an insider; I just don't get it. I don't know much about his own albums, but his contributions to the BB's/BW canon sound pretty nice to my ears.
3836  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Combining \ on: April 21, 2012, 12:11:42 AM
Unfortunately neither album is without fault.  There are songs that are, for lack of a better term, filler.

I disagree. I love every song on 'Sunflower'.
Me, too, could not eliminate any of them. 'Surf's Up' isn't quite as strong - I've always suspected it would have matched 'Sunflower' in quality if Dennis had contributed a couple songs.
3837  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: How much did drugs do to brian's mind? on: April 20, 2012, 01:16:26 PM
Absolutely. BW today is pretty much down to him.

Mike is an asshole, true, but that is balanced out by his many redeeming features - songwriting, performances, etc. Landy is irredeemable.
right on!
3838  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Turntable question. on: April 19, 2012, 12:16:58 AM
In case anyone still cared, two days of not using the turntable is apparently enough to cure wobbling. What kind of deep voodoo does this thing operate on?!
I doubt it was voodoo - I'd say you turntable was just feeling dizzy and needed a few days inertia to recover
I used to own one with similar problems.
3839  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Dick Clark/Beach Boys on: April 18, 2012, 01:30:34 PM
Dick Clark showed an early Beach Boys clip on a syndicated show he had back in the early 90's, Dick Clark's Golden Greats. The guys were in their Pendleton shirts doing "Surfin' Safari". I'd never seen that clip before, but it's turned up in other shows since then.
3840  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Sad news about The Bands' Levon Helm on: April 18, 2012, 01:22:18 PM
You can see what a gentleman Levon is during the interviews in The Last Waltz. Great to listen to him talk, even better to hear him sing or play. Definately had his own unique style on the drums, I'm sure I tried to copy his playing when I was starting out.
3841  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Will / should Brian retire (touring) after the 2012 reunion? on: April 16, 2012, 12:08:17 AM
Brian has nothing left to prove to anyone as a solo artist. I don't know why he should keep touring if he doesn't like it.
I'm more interested in Brian working in the studio, creating more works of the caliber of TLOS; if I want to see a touring oldies act, there'll always been Mike's band.
3842  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Why would anyone be obsessed/so very much into The Beach Boys? on: April 16, 2012, 12:03:48 AM
My dad never understood my obsession with music, period. But especially Bob Dylan. "The guy can't sing, he's a terrible harmonica player, blah blah blah".
3843  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Brian Wilson out for the season? on: April 15, 2012, 12:46:48 PM
Saw this headline a few minutes ago, and wondered "WTF?" He might need elbow surgery. Honestly, I do think the closer for the SF Giants looks a little like our Brian in the 70's.
3844  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Turntable question. on: April 14, 2012, 01:17:52 PM
Erghghhh.... I spoke too soon. Now it's just doing it at the end of the records.

The thing is, it's a little box with the needle just poking out from under it. and the box is scraping the record..... It's doing my head in - trying to lift the tonearm with blutack and it's still going on. And there's no way to sort it because it's cheap as f*ck.

Sigh.
This is the kind of thing I lose sleep over.
3845  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 25th Anniversery in Hawaii---what went wrong? on: April 14, 2012, 12:57:22 AM
Odd how they didn't support Brian (Al and Carl), even though in the end, it supports Landy.

Landy was preventing Brian from communicating with Carl at the time, so Carl may not have had a choice.

I'm reminded again of how much I still hate Landy. Yeah, I know he's deceased....and probably very warm right now Evil
3846  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: So what actually happened to Taylor Mills on: April 12, 2012, 10:20:19 PM
By all means, it is much better to listen to men trying to sound like women than an actual woman's voice.
I thought it was a brave, honest move to alter the basic sound of the "blend", which to be honest, is dishonest the closer it comes to "incredible simulation" territory of the real Beach Boys sound. That sound, that blend, is gone, over, finito.
Don Was's attempt to rearrange and update the Brian Wilson sound for the I Just Wasn't Made For These Times soundtrack wasn't really a success, but I'd rather have a brave failure than the middling, bland vocal success of recent years.
But, really, I am a Beach Boys "classic years" fan, not so much of the Wilsonmania years. So what do I know?
I agree with that.
3847  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 25th Anniversery in Hawaii---what went wrong? on: April 11, 2012, 10:24:40 PM
Off topic, but this special was not bad. Yeah, the guys made it obvious they cannot read cue cards, but have you ever seen Brian in better physical shape? Carl also looks slimmed down, maybe it was all that sand and surf  Grin I'm an Everlys fan, so seeing them onstage with the Beach Boys was a thrill (and, no, those were not wigs, the Evs are just extremely hairy guys). I enjoyed Three...uh...Two Dog Night (you wanna talk bad blood? The Beach Boys have got nothing on Chuck, Danny and Cory). Too many medleys, though, too many songs cut short, and Good Vibrations was constantly interrupted with "Happy 25 Beach Boys". Probably would've been a better show if they'd just taped a Beach Boys concert, inserted some interviews and backstage footage, and forgotten the guests, but this was prime time tv, 1987. "Surf In the USA" anyone?
3848  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Turntable question. on: April 11, 2012, 10:12:37 PM
(sigh of relief) Hope you didn't damage any of your records. If you ever have problems, these guys http://www.turntabletreasures.com are really good. I bought a turntable from them last year, the previous one lasted me about 20 years.
3849  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Carl Wilson - \ on: April 10, 2012, 10:56:29 PM
Perhaps he was just having an off day.

If that's what a vocal off day sounds like, I'll take a few dozen off years, please...
Yeah! What he said!
3850  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: \ on: April 10, 2012, 10:54:08 PM
Sure hope there is a physical single. Took me years to find the Still Cruisin' 45 - just got it a couple months ago at Bop Street, only cost me $4. Probably never will find Somewhere Near Japan, or any later BB's "singles", but thankfully a few of Brian's solo singles have appeared on 45's.  I've got What I Really Want for Christmas, Your Imagination, Midnight's Another Day, Melt Away, Love and Mercy and Let's Go to Heaven in My Car on 45's.
