I haven't seen SNL in a very long time, and that clip makes me glad I haven't. What a load of rubbish. First off the "We Are The World" parody has been done at least once before by SNL (maybe not by this cast, but hey how about thinking up something new?), the impersonations are lousy (Eddie Vedder and Gwen Stefani aside) and it just plain isn't funny. My cat could come up with funnier material than that! ![Smokin](http://smileysmile.net/board/Smileys/default/smokin.gif)

I took bass lessons from her when I was 15 or 16 and living in Santa Cruz CA, but it only lasted about two weeks before she split town and went back to LA. I was in awe of her because I knew she'd played on so many big recordings (including Beach Boys). She would have me tape each of our lesson sessions so I could listen to them at home as I practiced what we'd gone over. Wish I still had some of those tapes! ![Sad](http://smileysmile.net/board/Smileys/default/sad.gif)

I'm certain this must have been mentioned previously, but I'd say "The Girl From New York City", for one. I remember reading in the Rolling Stone record guide [in a review of Summer Days (and Summer Nights!!) by Dave Marsh] that this was a cover of The Ad Libs "Boy From New York City", and then when I finally heard the song I was, on one hand, pissed off that such a major music rag could publish a review (and not a very good one) of something the reviewer (again, Dave Marsh) obviously hadn't even listened to, and on the other hand I was blown away by how great this song is. I love this track. This is classic Beach Boys par excellence, IMHO, and a very overlooked track.

I've always been under the impression that the only thing added to Cabin Essence by Carl was the lead vocal, and that the rest of the track - instrumentation and backing vocals ("doing-doing's" and all) had been there all along (i.e. or since Brian had first recorded them).

Do You Like Worms is a great title. The song is all about digging into the past and uncovering the "worms" of manifest destiny. I think in 66/67 it would have remained the title. As well, I think Da Da would have retained that title, especially as it, like Mr's O'Leary's Cow, wasn't an actual listed title, but part of The Elements. I would agree though that Look/I Ran could have been simply place holding titles.
Interesting idea Paul. If you roll over a rock, you're likely to dig a few worms. Exactly. That's what I always took the title to mean.

One thing I did forget to mention... What the hell are these "Roll Plymouth Rock", "Song For Children", "In Blue Hawaii" sunshine pop bullmerda titles on BWPS? Yes, I know the famous story - Melinda found the original titles "weird". But still... Mere nitpicking... ![Smiley](http://smileysmile.net/board/Smileys/default/smiley.gif) So the titles were changed because Melinda didn't like them? What's weird about "Look" or "I Ran" as a title? ![Huh](http://smileysmile.net/board/Smileys/default/huh.gif)

Based on an older thread I began making altered albums. My Surfin' Safari has Lonely Sea on it, plus Farmer's Daughter, which I know was recorded after Safari was released, but I think it fits with the theme of the title track.
On another note: I seem to recall reading that John Lennon said something about Lonely Sea, that it was one of his favorites. I cannot recall where I saw that, and I'm wondering if anyone might know - or am I mistaken?

Quibbles and bits. I've got a few too, and they've all been expressed already so I won't go into it, but doesn't any one feel that no matter what - it's amazing the album exists at all? Maybe it is or isn't SMILE, and maybe Brian's involvement was simply singing and saying yes or no to certain things, but so what? He did all that work years ago, and in whatever configuration it is in today - it's still his work. With some assistance at this point, fine, but it's still his. I agree the sound of it isn't as good as the original tracks, and i wish he had not done all the lead vocals himself, and on and on and on... But I still am amazed it's there, and though I don't listen to it as often as the original stuff, I occasionally do and can enjoy it for what it is, not for what it isn't. And I don't believe, as some do, that it was solely done to cash-in, or revive a flagging career. There may have been elements of that in there, but it seems to me care and pains were taken to honor the music itself. A big thing too is that seeing it live, you could see that Brian was thrilled, he was having a good time. Not like when I saw him during his first solo tour, where he seemed completely uncomfortable. Do I wish his wife and managers in '67 had said, "It's time to release Smile"? You betcha! But oh well... In the end, it's not The Beach Boys Smile, it's BWPS, and as that I'm happy to have it.

Recalling when I first read that he was going to release this, and how stunned I was when it actually happened, and how I sat there gazing at the unopened CD for the longest time before opening it, and then carefully, almost sacredly placing the disc in the player, and then hesitating a moment before hitting "play", and then being knocked over by the experience of hearing what I was hearing, a something I never, ever thought I would hear in any form (other than the original incomplete, unreleased sessions), and the pure joy and amazement of the experience... ...with repeated listenings and scrutiny, my critical ear began assessing damage points here and there, and I began to question things and find the longing for completion still squirming inside me. BWPS hasn't so much ended the mystery as added to it. And actually, that's cool. And despite any dissatisfactions on my part, nothing will ever wipe away that intial experience. It was really great. ![angel](http://smileysmile.net/board/Smileys/default/angel.gif)

I LOVE Carl And The Passions!
To me it sounds like the debut album by some kick-ass band who just happened to have Carl as a singer/guitarist, Dennis as a singer/musician and none other than Brian Wilson contributing songs and singing (somewhere on there) and Mike Love/Al Jardine making guest appearances!!
Might this album be the most "Wilson brothers" of all?

Seeing as how this question doesn't deserve it's own topic, but it kind of fits here, I'm going to ask everyone: what's your favorite song off of Pet Sounds? Not favorites, but favorite. I'll have to go with "Caroline No".
It's a tough choice, but I'd pick You Still believe In Me.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Carl & The Passions "So Tough" / Pet Sounds

I am wondering about the decision to pair "So Tough" with Pet Sounds. Whose decision was it? And why Pet Sounds? Why not something else? Was it a random pairing, or was there some specific reasoning behind it? We're they attempting to compare the two? Did they think people would want to purchase Pet Sounds and that this would help sales of "So Tough"? Thanks.

12 stand alone tracks is what I believe it would have been (with The Elements being the suite), and isn't Brian quoted as saying at the time (to paraphrase), "There won't be any jokes per se, but somebody might say something in between tracks"? This always gave me the impression of stand a lone tracks with odd little bits inbetween. But I'd agree with the assertion that had they put in the effort, it could have been completed.
