Actually, that car shell may have been at Champaign, IL... November 19, 1977. I saw both shows. I think Brian was playing the large white grand piano in Edwardsville, in August. Hard to remember. I do recall being surprised. It looked like he was sitting in a hot rod facing the stage. Looked a bit silly as I remember.

<<I never called Summer Days a hodgepodge...its a great album! And just because side 2 of Today is the mellow side vs the fast songs on side 1 doesnt make it a lesser album. And I never said post67 BBs is crap, just hit&miss..wild honey is a solid lp I dont care what anyone says, same w 20/20; sunflower's strengths is in dennis's songs rather than brian's for the first and only time; surfs up & holland have some great songs and somw mediocre as well, agreed? 15bO is a solid sounding lp it just bummed some people out because it was all outtakes and covers. >>
Kook - would ya say MIU, LA and KTSA are all out-takes and covers, too? And maybe Holland is the last real Beach Boys album?
Sign me curious.

<<Its so easy for people to contradict something just because they haven't said it first. Just because I dont quote something word for word doesn't mean it cant be slightly rephrased if its essentially the same.>>
Or as the great Robert McCloskey once said,
“I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.”

<<Has anyone ever seen him compose on guitar? Other than an employee or family member, anyway. I'm sure he's a virtuoso in their eyes and plays the most intricate guitar parts flawlessly, only DOESN'T on stage to not let the others look subpar... and to maybe concentrate on pointing.>>
He spoke of it in an interview. As I recall, he made a point of saying that he wasn't much of a guitarist but knew enough to play some basic chords and write them down with lyrics.
Does that explanation suffice for you, Ont? Or do we need to search deeper for more darker intent in his claims regarding said instrument?

<<yep you pigeonholed the kook...cant argue w someone that says it like it is, gotta jus follow the asinine bs like the majority and stick w blissful ignorance ;-)>>
Abbott: Strange as it may seem, they give ball players nowadays very peculiar names. Costello: Funny names? Abbott: Nicknames, nicknames. Now, on the St. Louis team we have Who's on first, What's on second, I Don't Know is on third-- Costello: That's what I want to find out. I want you to tell me the names of the fellows on the St. Louis team. Abbott: I'm telling you. Who's on first, What's on second, I Don't Know is on third-- Costello: You know the fellows' names? Abbott: Yes. Costello: Well, then who's playing first? Abbott: Yes. Costello: I mean the fellow's name on first base. Abbott: Who. Costello: The fellow playin' first base. Abbott: Who. Costello: The guy on first base. Abbott: Who is on first. Costello: Well, what are you askin' me for? Abbott: I'm not asking you--I'm telling you. Who is on first. Costello: I'm asking you--who's on first? Abbott: That's the man's name. Costello: That's who's name? Abbott: Yes.

<<I agree, the first 5 cuts on MIU and pitter patter are fun, LA is weak, but dennis' bambu tracks are good, I just dont get why anyone would deny it was a hodgepodge collection.>>
Abbott: You throw the ball to first base. Costello: Then who gets it? Abbott: Naturally. Costello: Naturally. Abbott: Now you've got it. Costello: I throw the ball to Naturally. Abbott: You don't! You throw it to Who! Costello: Naturally. Abbott: Well, that's it—say it that way. Costello: That's what I said. Abbott: You did not. Costello: I said I throw the ball to Naturally. Abbott: You don't! You throw it to Who! Costello: Naturally.

they need to release this on dvd... >>
I looked into this about 13 years ago when acquiring titles for Retromedia Entertainment. There's a great deal of confusion as to who owns the rights to the film. Reportedly Paramount, but they weren't sure at the time. And due to this confusion, it may have slipped into the public domain in 2006. Unfortunately, the only transfer out there is the one that came from the VHS, which in turn, I believe, came from a film transfer to 3/4 tape back in the early 80s.

<<Strange how the opening sequence dates a J and D concert as July 1966. Wasn't Jan's accident in April '66?>>
The film plays fast and loose with dates. It also notes Dean's visit to Jan to play him Save For A Rainy Day as occurring in 1970. In fact, it happened in the fall of 1966. This is standard telescoping with biopics.

<<We complained for years that Mike mainly performed a meat & potatoes set. We should be happy that he now wants to perform the numbers that we always wanted him to do. My wish is that he carries it on back here in the states later this summer.>>
True words there... and sad to say, at some point in the future there will be no original Beach Boys singing these songs. Enjoy while you can.

<<So because of this, I think the most reasonable solution is for the lead singers of the original songs to sing the songs (if they are still with us). Therefore for Mike's group, center it on Mike type stuff. People are paying to see him (if they indeed know that they aren't seeing the real Beach Boys). >>
By this logic, Billy Hinsche shouldn't have sung Sail On Sailor, I'm Waiting for the Day, In My Room or even Wipe Out, Jeff Foskett never should have attempted Warmth of the Sun back in the early 80s, Blondie should never have touched Wild Honey, Bruce should not have done Wendy or Do You Wanna Dance or God Only Knows or Please Let Me Wonder or In My Room, Carl should have given Caroline No a pass, Dennis and Carl should have skipped Help Me Rhonda and - heavens - Al Jardine never should have touched Surfer Girl. Or Heroes and Villains. Or Wouldn't It Be Nice. Or Sloop John B. Or You're So Good To Me.
