receding and greying hair, a paunch about the middle, wrinkles, nostril hair oh yeah getting older is great Happy Birthday btw Got both. I got a decent sized bald spot in the middle of my head, and I had to shave completely for the first time in about a year because the grey was becoming noticeable- I normally have a goatee, but I'm actually 100% clean shaven now...and it makes me look older anyway.. I hit it this year. It takes some getting used too but I am happier now then when I was 20. I know as long as I stay "young" in my head I feel it won't be so bad. Happy birthday,it will be OK if you never get "old". Mike...we're only 2 years apart?! Awesome. Depressing thought of the day...I first started posting on Mike Wheeler's board when I was 17...

I met Al in 1999 when he was touring Family and Friends. It was in Green Bay WI. My wife and I and Goofy Jeff were eating dinner at the casino where BBF & F were performing. This was the first night of two that they were playing. My wife and I were staying for both nights, even tho we only had tickets for the first nights show.
We're eating dinner and my wife motions behind me, "look there's Al Jardine," she said. I turned and sure enough it was Al. I sort of nodded at him. He came over to our table. Actually sat and spoke with us for a about five minutes. He asked if we had eaten yet. We had. I believe that if we were just starting dinner he may have asked to join us. We had a nice brief chat and that was that. I did get to meet Carnie and Wendy after this show.
As I stated I didn't have a ticket for the second nights show. Goofy Jeff left to go home and my wife didn't plan on attending the second nights concert. Tickets were free, but you needed one to get in. About an hour before the show I made up a little sign in our hotel room which read " Need One Ticket." I told the wife I was leaving early to see if I could score a ticket.
I was waiting outside the hotel, holding my sign. Out of the hotel walks Al and his son Adam. He read my sign and said "Jeff you don't need a ticket, come on get in the limo." I rode to the stage with Al and Adam, was taken back stage, given a pass and then a front row seat!!! All due to the kindness of Al.
It was a great evening. Al was very cordial in the dining room and of course very kind with the limo ride and back stage pass. At all times he presented himself as a very nice, humble person.
Did you have to give him a hummer backstage afterwards? Please tell me I didn't just read about a f*cking hummer on this message board. Please.

Al seems like he's really cool.

I've talked to Brian at least a a dozen times in my life since first meeting him in '79 but never have scored an "official" interview with him. I've been turned down by his management several times. I get the feeling his management may not dig my writing style. Trust me...you DON'T want to deal with Brian's management anyway. Besides, *I* dig your writing style!

I was about to say the same thing. In the interview I read with Mike he said Al could not let go of old affronts. Now that is exactly what Gary Usher claimed in the Wilson Project book about Al's anger with him about a loan he gave him for the Rachel and The Revolvers record. Yes, that IS what Usher said. Of course, at the time I didn't put much stock in it, considering Usher felt drum machines were better than real drums and none of the Beach Boys were very good singers (double )

Ahhh, Andrew...I thought it was more than that. Close enough, though. I dislike much of Love You for vocal and lyrical reasons so its funny that Night has decent vocals to me, at least compared to most of the other tracks. I like Carl's work on Adult Child because its so offbeat. To me Adult Child works better then Love You because I think the production is more sophisticated and also the voices are more on pitch. Now live you are right, Carl sounded like Elmer Fudd. The 1-77 video has him sounding kind of like this too. He was in top form for the It's OK special and Knebworth but in between ...... Adult Child was awesome IMHO. Don't know why in the hell "Still I dream of it" wasn't released, as it sounded like it was finished. I just really cannot stand Carl's vocals from this period. He sounds flatter than a saltine cracker on much of it...real half-assed. His voice changed so much from Holland (as did everyone else except Al), and it really was unpleasant to these ears. Thank GOD he got his voice back. Compare these tracks vocally to anything Carl sang on BB85...

See, the thing is, he sounded exactly like that in live shows around that time period (the infamous Australian shows being a prime example). He sounded half-asleep. He speech was also heavily slurred ("shecond versh, Brrrrriiiiiiaaaaaannnn" still makes me laugh every time I hear it), and he seemed to always be making up parts that weren't there. The youtube stuff that's been posted is revealing.
It's that same voice that I hate so very much in "The Night was so young", ruining IMHO a rather pleasant song.
BTW...he recorded Livin With a Heartache allegedly stone-drunk...yet still sounded WORLDS better.

Question:
On "It's Over Now", was there really a tape speed fault that caused Carl to sound the way he did, or was it because of his heroin usage? I'm asking because I noticed he sounded pretty much the same on "Life is For the Living" and that song that talks about the sound a cig makes when you throw it in the water (Pffft)-I can never remember the name of that one, although it's a great tune. Anyway, Carl sounded similar on those cuts, so was it really a tape speed fault, or was it from the horse?
