the same man who has all the hardcore fans confused whether its Brian or not on the recording...
Oh, come on! We all know it was Brian singing the girl's part on "Be Here in the Morning" and the vocals at the end of "A Day in the Life of a Tree," right? Right? Hello? Is this thing on...? Some are Brian and some Al. Like in 'Be Here in the Morning' Brian sing Ahhh, and Al sings most of the lead. Then on 'Life of a Tree' Al sings "Oh lord I lay me down..." and I believe Brian is singing doo doo doo. But Marylin might be singing some of that. I don't know. That's just what I think it is. I was just kidding before, making reference to longstanding debates here on who sang what. For the record, I accept that it's Al singing lead on "Be Here in the Morning." But it'll take a time machine and a trip to Brian's home studio in 1971 during the recording session for "A Day in the Life of a Tree" to convince me that it wasn't Brian singing "Oh lord I lay me down..."

And by the way, it would be better for everyone if he had burned them, or if they were stolen. I know some people around here like some of that merda, but...yuck. It's god-awful.
"The Spirit of Rock and Roll" is pretty good.

Wild Honey is also a song that the 2fer says Brian sings, but I'm pretty sure its Carl. At times it sounds like Brian though. Maybe they share the lead on that one too.
Carl definitely on lead, Brian definitely on the "Sweet, sweet, honey bee, eat it, eat it, eat it up honey" background vocals.

he presided over the dismantling of, or dumbing down of, what could have been the greatest BB's LP...Surf's UP...and saw it turn into a political compromise between members with less artisitc vision while great songs disappeared from it.
What songs were supposed to appear on it and didn't? Is there an original song list for the Surf's Up album that you could tell me about? Is it significantly different from the song list for the "Landlocked" album, as shown at Andrew G. Doe's site? http://www.btinternet.com/~bellagio/unreleased.html

Hi Peter!
The one thing I really don't get is, if the Beach Boys weren't delighted with the Love You album, why did they put it out as is? Couldn't they have gone in and reworked it to their liking? I've heard the demo tape of "Airplane," with Mike Love professing his affection for it and insisting that he get to sing it, so is it possible it was a case of them liking the material and not the execution? If so, they could have reworked the recordings, couldn't they?
As for them not necessarily liking the idea of Brian being back in the fold, or at the helm--what were their other options at that point? With Bruce, Blondie and Ricky gone, and no new material in the pipeline, where were they headed as a band?

I do think Paul might have developed a drinking problem after Linda's death. He showed up extremely drunk at the Wings' induction to the Rock Hall of Fame.
I noticed that myself. I think he even missed his cue to start singing "Let It Be." Billy Joel just kept playing the intro over and over until Paul finally showed up at the mic and began singing. It was very odd. There was an interview with Van Dyke Parks after the Queen's Jubilee. Van said Brian was very upset with Paul for being drunk during the festivities, to the point of detracting from the experience for Brian.
Never read that! Wow. You KNOW you're messed up when Brian Wilson is disappointed in you for being under the influence! Not saying that Paul did all the things she's claiming (and now there are questions about the whole thing in the press), but maybe he's had some personal difficulties not even related to the marriage itself.
I don't think he ever recovered--or WILL recover--from the death of Linda.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Vocals on "Here Comes The Night" (1967)
|

I've been listening to "Here Comes The Night" today, and it reminded me of a friendly disagreement I had with Andrew G. Doe a few months back, about who is singing lead on the song.
AGD said it was Carl, I said it was Brian.
After listening to the song today, over and over, I think I might have an answer:
I'm 99.9% sure that Brian sings the first verse I think it MIGHT be Carl singing the second verse And I'm 99.9% positive it's Brian singing the third verse
Anyone want to weigh in on this?

Quick question for Mr. Desper:
Are you still selling copies of your book RECORDING THE BEACH BOYS?
Thanks!
Yes Glenn, but follow directions on the book site or email me at askswd@webtv.net for book ordering information. I changed things a little. ~swd Thanks! Can you post a link to the site? I had it bookmarked, but the link seems to have expired.

I read that Brian went to the hospital to know his new grandchild, Carnie's daughter. While he was there he got to meet Wendy's kid(s) for the first time.
What does that mean? That he's close to Carnie but not Wendy?
