At 1:22 is this Marilyn in the audience giving hand gestures to Brian about eye contact?
Shes second row back, third from the left.

A fascinating observation!  Yeah, that's Marilyn, and Fred Vail two people to her left.

Huh!  You read my mind; I was just going to ask who the guy was sitting next to Jodi, but now I know.
Thanxx!

You're welcome, and now you can tell me who Jodi is!

But who knows for sure what those gestures meant?  Maybe she was indicating he should move closer to the mic.  Then again, maybe it was an eye contact issue, way back in 1964.

So, if I have to buy a used table, what has the least chance of being a crapper?

Get a direct drive Technics with a strobe to indicate perfect pitch.  Many are available used, and the classic Technics SL 1200 is still available new.

If a self identified "audiophile" tries to tell you that a belt drive turntable is superior to any of the direct drive Technics tables listed above, please politely advise said "audiophile" that he/she is full of s**t, then invite him/her to a controlled double blind listening test.

My first question would be: from what you observed, do you believe audio/video recordings of this event might accidentally exist?

Don't know about the camera in the middle of the venue, but I was told the videographer who was set up in the back on the deck was given permission to record the entire show only if the video recordings were not posted or distributed.

So you got his name and info?

Unfortunately, wasn't there!  Heard it was a great concert though!

Al last nite in Big Sur.

1131  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Henry Miller Library Big Sur Beachboys reunion this Friday!? on: October 09, 2010, 03:06:54 PM

Here's what I remember. There may be a couple I left out, but this is pretty much it - not in this order:

RUNAROUND SUE

Thanks so much for the report and setlist, Mikie!

Just a minor correction, Mikie meant to type "Runaway" rather than "Runaround Sue".

Custom, did you not read what I posted right before you?

The threads had been ignored already. The "honored guests" were not posting. The threads were inactive. They took up a lot of space. They were moved to a subsection because they were cluttering up the top. If they're not being used, why have them there?

Yes, Wirestone, I did read your post.  And yes, some honored guests rarely posted.  Some posted in bursts.  But with the Honored Guests now on a "Child Board" they are posting even less, and we are posting far fewer questions for them.

Like I said, with the current format, it pretty much guarantees that the Honored Guests section will be ignored by one and all.  One of the coolest things about this board, imo, is that we have a number of BB experts as members.  We are fortunate that people like Doe, Stebbins, Roach, etc. are regular posters in various threads, but when the Honored Guests were at the top of General On Topic Discussions, it was very easy to post a question for them and very easy to check the dates to see if there were any recent posts.  As a result, I think they should be brought back to the forefront.

How about this --  if an Honored Guest hasn't posted in, say, two years, their thread could be archived and moved to a Child Board, then reactivated if they ever get back to posting again.

1134  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Where'd they all go? on: October 06, 2010, 12:06:51 PM
I'd like to see the Honored Guests section restored to the top of 'General On Topic Discussions' where it used to be.  As a 'Child Board', the Honored Guests section is now basically totally ignored.  I know I never get around to checking it.  Yes, many of  the Honored Guests also post in regular threads, but it was really nice to have a separate section where specific questions could be asked of the Honored Guests.

My recollection is that two or three people said they took up too much room at the top, so they got moved.  I say "Bring 'em back to the forefront!"

I'll tell Al you said hello, Custom Machine. I think I'm gonna see him this Friday night in Big Sur.

OK, and if you do attend Al's Big Sur library concert, please be sure to give us a report.

1136  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Best radio ad ever? on: October 04, 2010, 07:32:18 PM
How bizarre...  I wonder; could Mike Love have approved this ad?  Almost thought that was Carl speaking at first, too.

I believe that the first half IS Carl! It has to be. And then a different person at the end?

Definitely not Carl.  I'd say it's the same VO guy throughout.

1137  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Are there any pictures of Bruce Johnston with a moustache? on: October 04, 2010, 06:06:15 PM
Now I know who "Custom Machine" is.   All I need is his SS# and I'm set........ Grin

It's right there on the label!!  In those days, RS used to keep it out there for people to see;  419-01-7205

Rolling Stone screwed up!  The actual number is 104-52-1045.  Henceforth, please be advised that any posts appearing from "Custom Machine" are actually those of "Mikie", who has assumed my identity.  I cannot accept any responsibility, nor will I be held liable, for anything he says.  Mikie, hope you are enjoying living in my old early 70s college days apartment!  Say hello to Al for me when he stops by for a few drags!   Smokin

Yeah, you cleared the air alright.    After you farted......

Wait a minute, Mikie ... are you trying to tell us that 'bgas' is short for 'butt gas'?

1139  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Are there any pictures of Bruce Johnston with a moustache? on: October 04, 2010, 12:01:08 PM
Can someone please page Mr. Johnston and tell him that Magnum PI want's his 'tache back.

Actually, Magnum stole the 'tache from Bruce, as this photo predates the beginning of the TV show by about 9 years.   Yes, peeps, Bruce was ahead of the curve!

Well, yeah, assuming the address of an apartment I had in college 39 years ago would be of any help!

Seriously, do you think I should Photoshop out that old address and repost it?

This is simply the greatest thread ever.  And please, let's get back to Brucie's `stache.

Oops, just tried posting the photo with no luck.  Directions for doing so, anyone?

What works best for me is to go to www.tinypic.com (but there are other web sites as well). You can upload pictures there, and get a link which you can post on this board. Try it out!

Thanks! Here it is ...

Hey, I'm lookin' forward to it.  Could be a very enjoyable film with some great music.  Could be so-so.  Could be a bust.  But, even if it's a bust, doubtful it could be any worse than some of the worst stuff the BBs, both as a band and individually (well, some of them individually!), have put out.

Fox Wins Beach Boys Musical Bid

Wouldn’t It Be Nice? Deadline and Variety are reporting that Twentieth Century Fox have secured rights to produce a musical based on the music of The Beach Boys.

Susannah Grant (The Soloist, Erin Brockovich) will write the script not about the group, but rather “a storyline with the surf and fun prevalent in the band’s many hits.” Think Mamma Mia!.

Craig Zadan, Neil Meron and John Stamos will produce. The former duo worked on Hairspray as well as Chicago. They are currently working on the Footloose update. All three worked on the TV movie A Raisin in the Sun. I love the Beach Boys and would be down for this.

1145  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Dear Lord, no... on: October 01, 2010, 01:37:35 PM
In this case, "acquired rights to the Beach Boys catalogue" would mean that the film producers have been given rights (obviously for a fee) to use the music in their film, as well as subsequent video device/streaming releases.

The article says, "The film is expected to use the band's music."  What is not apparent from that statement is, does this mean the film will use the BB's original recordings, or will the main characters and/or others be performing the songs?  Could be either, or even a combination of the two, but there is a very good chance it's the latter.

1146  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: MIU album appreciation thread on: September 30, 2010, 12:21:58 AM
Doing a quick perusal of Amazon US, (which means I may have easily missed something), it appears the only original material BB albums not currently available as US CDs are MIU/LA Light, Still Crusin, and Summer in Paradise.

As far as MIU is concerned, I absolutely loved listening to most of it when it was released in Sept 1978.  I played the album constantly at home, as well as the cassette copy I made for the car, where I left off She's Got Rhythm, since I considered BW's vocals to be a virtually unbearable listening experience, and Hey Little Tomboy, which was such an embarrassing song that I didn't want to take the chance of any passengers hearing it and asking how I could possibly be a Beach Boys fan.  After listening to the cassette while driving toward the beach during a camping trip to Big Sur, I was surprised, while walking down to the beach, to encounter Al Jardine's ranch, with a sign "Jardine Arabians" indicating its presence.

So, 32 years later, what do I think of the album?  Well, there are still a number of songs I really enjoy, with my favorites being Kona Coast, Woncha Come Out Tonight, Belles of Paris, and My Diane.  And, with the exception of the two songs on the album that I've always found irritating, I still like the rest of the album.  In fact, I just popped the MIU/LA Light CD into the car to listen to tomorrow on the way to the Padres vs Cubs game.

I deleted it.

That will be $3.50.

^_^

Thanks so much for saving me the intense embarrassment of having a post in the archives that was initially a duplicate, but then changed to a simple hyphen.  Please advise me where to send the money.  Or, alternatively, I'll be happy to enjoy a Jack Daniel's on the rocks in your honor.

1148  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian's shouty vocals on: September 23, 2010, 12:25:14 PM
The point was so good it had to be posted twice.

Yeah, and while you were writing I tried to delete the second post, but couldn't figure out how to!  I ended up changing the second duplicate post to a "-".

Happened when I was pressing the browser back button.  Saw the message again and it appeared I hadn't posted it yet, so I hit 'post' again.

Is it possible to delete posts?

That's just how he sounded by then. Check out his vocals on the Spring album...he sounds EXACTLY the same. Dunno why...maybe all the coke made him sound more nasal Huh

Good point.  His voice here also sounds a lot like his speaking voice as I recall hearing it when he was on the radio in LA promoting the Spring album.

Here is a great piece from 2005 that tells of the '67 Hawaii mobile recordings in great detail, as much detail as anything perhaps...and also includes a few questions I had posted to the author back then and had forgotten about. I also forgot Bill Halverson was the lead engineer in Hawaii...and notice the mention of "Diamondhead" which would soon be the title of a rather awesome instrumental on Friends.

A fascinating read.  Thanks C-man, it's great to see first hand accounts  ... and, on a personal note, congrats!
