Wow don't supppose we'll ever know what they were...just like we'll never hear how Surf's Up part II sounded at the original SMiLE sessions...or what the vocal sessions for Look/I Ran entailed.

Thanks Mr Doe.
1077  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Sax on California Dreamin'? on: May 06, 2008, 09:44:31 AM
Somehow there's a difference between the sax on "California Dreamin" and the sax on "Salt Lake City."

I think that the horrible delay they have on the California Dreamin sax plays a part.

I agree generally saxes are great when subtle.

However I love the Sax parts on many Madness songs...though quite a different type of music of course.

back in 1985 SWD was adamant that the original lyrics - which were taped over - were significantly different and, as he said "much better".

Is that just referring to the lyrics at the end of the verses or the entire thing?...what could be better than 'I'm a cork on the ocean'??
1079  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Alleged TLOS demos... on: May 01, 2008, 02:44:25 PM
I've been lucky enough to hear the demos, (though only a couple of times because I don't want to spoil the real thing) and they are good, some better than others, while some of the instruments sound a little MIDI-ish to me - particularly the title track.  But what do we expect - they are demos.

That said, when fully produced I expect TLOS to be a great triumph for Mr Wilson...the demos show the potential...and with the full orchestrations from the live shows I don't think I have looked forward to the release of (m)any albums more than this (I missed the SMiLE anticipation).

Of course we know all about SMiLE, but why wasn't 'Lei'd...' released?

Any chance we'll have another podcast series from Brian, Mike, Al and Bruce (and Mr Marks for the tracks he played on) for this new release?

Also, am I right to assume it will include new stereo mixes like we had for WOTS last year? And will they be available to download as single tracks on I-Tunes etc? I thought the stereo versions of Kiss Me Baby and Please Let Me Wonder were great...so a stereo version of something like She Knows Me Too Well would really be somthing too.

Cheers

Does Mike still sing lead on all the songs that he originally sang lead on...On the PS podacast I think he said of Here Today that it was quite high for someone with his vocal range to sing...so these days he must find it even harder!

PS Who is Rick Rubin?

Not sure if you're being serious. If so, he's a guy who made a name for himself in the 80s as one of the first people to really popularize rap among white audiences, co-founding Def Jam Records with Russell Simmons and working with groups like Run-DMC and the Beastie Boys. In more recent years he's been considered someone who can get decent work out of aging artists (Neil Diamond, Johnny Cash, etc.).

Wow I really should have know this Embarrassed

Thanks

Later research showed that it went "gold" pretty quickly.

What of the story that Capitol mis-counted the sales or something like that...so it was awarded Gold status late? Or am I confusing that with something else?

I really have no emotional attachment to those "other guys".

I do.

Those guys are more than just Brian's backing musicians.  To me they are heroes in the part they played in Brian's triumph of overcoming his demons with touring again and then releasing SMiLE...to great acclaim.  Watch Darian's after-show interview on the DVD from the SMiLE premiere and you can see how much emotion he has invested in the music and I think that counts for something.

I love the Beach Boys...but without Denny and Carl I am a fan of Brian first.  However, a re-union of somekind, with genuine good feeling and peace between all involved would be nice to see.

Cheers

I think even as a Brian solo album TLOS would do better than GIOMH because:

-The music is better.
-The live shows got good reviews. How many of the people who attended the RFH would buy the CD?
-GIOMH was released in the shadow of BWPS (?)
-Maybe after the success of SMiLE, Brian has more fans now...including me and some friends that I managed to convert.

Maybe it could even go top 20, at least in the UK.

What do you mean by the "mamama" bit?

Will I be able to find it on the ProjectSMiLE CD?
1092  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: SMiLE rarities on: March 21, 2008, 09:21:29 AM
Chances are the second movement only existed in Brian's head, and was never committed to tape.

I wonder how similar it was in his head to how it was re-created for BWPS...I guess we'll never know.

Cheers
