10601  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Greatest Opening to a song on: February 04, 2006, 06:06:57 AM
Once again my favorite song:

"Well she didn't look as pretty as some others I have known"
10602  Smiley Smile Stuff / 1960's Beach Boys Albums / Re: Wild Honey on: February 04, 2006, 05:13:31 AM
One of Jim Morrison's favorite albums as far as I know. And rightfully so.

Is that really true? Where can this be verified? Did one of the Doors mention that Jim loved Wild Honey in an interview?

I think Ian is right. Morrison was a big Beach Boys-Fan. he said they were the reason he came to California.
If he still thought so after Dennis had beaten him up, I don't know.... Grin
10603  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Rare song -- Brian playing "Susie Cincinnati" and "Little Child" in Holland! on: February 04, 2006, 04:54:01 AM
Maybe he's playing it for Al, kind of an acknowledgement that he likes Suzie.  Still unrealesed at that point.

I think it was already released as a B-side at that point.

BTW I'm just downloading a song called "Murry the beast" by Brian. Anyone know what this is? I can't hear it, since it's not finished and it someho doesn't work. Maybe it's Surfin USA and someone just named it "Murry the beast", but....
10604  Smiley Smile Stuff / 1960's Beach Boys Albums / Re: Wild Honey on: February 03, 2006, 07:14:06 AM
Love it ! 5 !!
This is an fantastic album. The Boys really showed they could rock! One of Jim Morrison's favorite albums as far as I know. And rightfully so.
I wish there would be a remastered version of it with outtakes and a stereo-version. The UM-release of it is my favorite of the UM-series. Maybe even a book written about these session (plus Friends and even Smiley Smile) to see how the BBs worked on the albums from that period. Stephen Desper could maybe give some insight.
There was an article 'bout half a year ago where a new rock-band was described (was it the Magic Numbers ? ) and Wild Honey was mentioned as "Brian Wilson's Indi-Rock-Gem", though I think this was more an group-effort, at least more so than Pet Sounds or Smile.

I think the Beach Boys' version of "Sloop" kicks ass! Unbelieveable arrangement and singing.
BTW anyone heard Lonnie Donegans version of it called "I wanna go home"? Beautiful and quite melancholy. So it kinda would fit on Pet Sounds feeling-wise
10606  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Hallmark album on: February 03, 2006, 05:54:21 AM
Maybe we should start guessing what the title of this CD will be. Here are some guesses:

Sounds of Father's Day
Endless Father's Day
Spirit of Father's Day
Unleash the Father's Day
Father's Day in Paradise
Looking Back at Father's Day
First Father's Day
Country Father's Day
MIU Father's Day
Salute to Father's Day
Summertime Father's Day
Group Therapy - Father's Day Edition
10 Big Ones (or 7 Live Ones, 3 Solo Ones, and 2 Filler Ones)

What about :

Father's day ( and mother's night !!!)
10607  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Math Equations on: February 03, 2006, 04:39:54 AM
Brian + 38 years - sanity + Darian - Mike Love = Smile

10608  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: James Blunt on: February 03, 2006, 04:14:51 AM
I think the songs are quite good. The voice....it takes time to like it..... Roll Eyes
I just have to listen to this, since my girlfriend is crazy for that album....
10609  Smiley Smile Stuff / Ask The Honored Guests / Re: The Stephen Desper Thread on: February 03, 2006, 04:11:01 AM
Yeah, thanks Mr Desper. You really got into detail. I didn't expect this, but I'm very grateful for that.
And you're right, we owe you one.....

There is of course the whole Be Here in the Morning debate. David Leaf says Brian, AGD Al, and I don't know for sure.

Well, Desper called Al, and Al says that he sang it, and it sounds exactly like Al, so I think it must be Al.

So said Brian

"Cabinessence", for example, started out as a wholly different trip- Dennis was going to sing it by himself and sound like a funky cat up in the mountains somewhere singing to a chick by a fireplace: very simple- and that's all there was to it
10612  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Cabinessence sequence done when? on: February 01, 2006, 09:41:14 AM
Those lyrics don't strike me as being Van Dyke Parksish at all, especially in comparison to the rest of the song.  They don't fit in with the Cabin Essence lyrics, so I doubt Brian or Van Dyke would've written them.

Well, I think they kinda fit with the truck being the "modern" iron horse....
10613  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Who's Idea was it to put Sloop John B on PS--Brian's or Capitol's? on: February 01, 2006, 04:23:29 AM
Memo was dated circa 2/23/66. Tracks listed were:

Wouldn't It Be Nice
Caroline, No
Good, Good, Good Vibrations [sic]
You Still Believe In Ne
That's Not Me
Hang On To Your Ego
Sloop John B
The Old Man And The Baby (=  Let's Go Away For A While}
Don't Talk...
I Just Wasn't Made...

... and two others, as yet untitled, one an instrumental. Interesting that "GGGV" was slated for inclusion five days after the very first session.

I can't remember where, but I'd read that "Good, God, Good Vibrations" was a working title for "Here Today". But I don't know how much truth lies in there....
10614  Smiley Smile Stuff / Ask The Honored Guests / Re: The Mark Linett Thread on: February 01, 2006, 04:19:54 AM
I remember somebody making a big deal about Brian using the fade out on the "vibrations a happenin' with her" on the original in the middle of the track, and how hard it was to do something like that back then.

That's not even a crossfade. He was just fading down several rotary faders at the same time. Not easy to do....

I thought about how much "technical" work, like what you described here, was done by Brian. I always thought he "just" put the different instruments together and had them play in a special way (besides of arranging, writing and singing this stuff), but I never thought about how difficult it must have been to mix all these things.
10615  Smiley Smile Stuff / Ask The Honored Guests / Re: The Stephen Desper Thread on: February 01, 2006, 04:16:45 AM
Hi Mr Desper,

I got two questions which I hope haven't been asked before.
First, I know many BBs-fans who ould like to know if that "sex sound" on the coda to "All I want to do" from 20/20 was a fake or real. Normally I would say "fake", but ith Dennis nothing seems so sure I believe...
And second, how came that you and the BBs used this radically different sound on Sunflower compared to the album before (20/20) ? Sunflower sounds like from another world compared to the "old class"-sound of 20/20. Had it anything to do with the change to Warner?
10616  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Odd "Heroes And Villains" sections?? on: January 31, 2006, 10:20:42 AM
Yeah I also did that at one time. I think it sounds quite good.
BTW I always tried to use the "horn intro" (which you hear as as link between "aum-di-di-wa-da" and the starting of the actual "H&V" on BWPS) as a "intro" to "Surf's Up". I think that sounds cool...
10617  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Hallmark album on: January 30, 2006, 06:09:25 AM
It wasn't worth all these fuzz we made around it.  I can't believe that they really release it like this, I'm dissapointed. really, but I'm excited for Brian's "new" track
10618  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Nascar on: January 29, 2006, 02:57:50 PM
That's what he said.  Wink
10619  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: basketball rock on: January 29, 2006, 01:30:22 PM
Our Team is a BW/DW/CW/ML/AJ co-write.

Probably the first time since "Friends" that they all wrote one song together and then it is such a terrible one. Roll Eyes

10621  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Al's California on: January 29, 2006, 10:44:49 AM
Yeah, it as a demo for Merle Haggard for the country-album. Great version. Could have been a great album if they would've done it well....
10622  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: City Blues HELP! on: January 28, 2006, 06:59:11 AM
Yeah, if only they would have still been a "relevant" group and not that oldies-thing.

You know hat? I don't care if this sounds like Brian. I mean Pet Sounds, Smile, etc. wouldn't have happened if he tried to sound like The BBs
10623  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: City Blues HELP! on: January 28, 2006, 05:02:52 AM
Oh thanks. Cool to know that. From this view, you're probably right that Dennis and  Garby Leon deserve a credit. Great song btw
10624  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Great Moments in Rock Censorship on: January 27, 2006, 07:32:10 AM
My fav-censorship is Elvis being filmed from the waist up on Sullivan, and therefore transporting his movements into the upper-region (say his arms), like on "Don't be cruel" . That cat is so cool...
10625  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: City Blues HELP! on: January 27, 2006, 07:26:52 AM
Scott says he wrote the lyrics to the second verse, because in the demo Bri sang the same lyrics both times.

Interestingly, I was just listening to that clandestine hotel room interview a couple of fans held with Brian in December '81, and when asked about recent songs he'd written, Bri mentions that one, and says he wrote it with Dennis and Garby Leon (athough I think he misprounced Garby' s name).  Not that he RECORDED it with them, but that he WROTE it with them.  So maybe they deserve a credit too...

C-Man Cool

But you don't know if he was talking 'bout City Blues, do you?
