Here is some Historical Perspective on Czechoslovakia in 1968, for those interested. If I recall correctly it was Alexander Dubcek who Mike called out and acknowledged . . . and the place went ballistic!

It's funny. The older you get, the more you begin to really relate to this album.... and relate to the insecurities that Brian expressed. Particularly tracks such as "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times" and "Caroline No".... it's hard for me to properly explain, but essentially while upon first listen I didn't mind the album but couldn't quite get my head around the hype, upon a very recent re-listen I've grown to appreciate and cherish this album a hell of a lot more. Very moving stuff

It's part of the power of the album.  As you get older, and enter real relationships, your feelings grow along with it.  I was way too young to understand what it was all about in 1966 when I first heard the album.  In the 1970s, when I was in my early twenties, I understood the happiness - and the pain.

Oh, so you do know where to put your music.  This must be the place.

According to her book, yes.

I met Patti at Ed Roach's and Trisha Campo's (then Roach) home around '72 or so(?), and she was quite open about her relationship with Dennis. She repeated a really funny story about something Dennis said to her, but I haven't read her book, so don't know if I should repeat it. I believe her dad approved his burial at sea that was unusual for someone out of the military.

As far as older women, that was fine with him, too. ;-) There are several of those stories, at least one of them being famous. I have no idea about Princess Margaret, but if so, they probably had fun. Dennis liked women and the favor was returned.

Many of the temper explosions I heard from Grillo's office on Ivar in '69-'70, had to do with lawsuits and Dennis's exploits. He was very, very busy.

I don't doubt MTaber's estimate of #'s, nor the 5 days' off ;-) - good one.

Dennis was prolific in so many ways, but when he was in love with a particular woman, he was madly in love, that was fun to watch.

He was one of a kind.

Thanks for the recollections, Debbie. It makes me think that Denny might have had a more prolific music (and/or acting) career if he wasn't as busy gettin' busy! 

Well, there's that! Then again, I think some of the women inspired his best music. I did also get to see Dennis at Christine McVie's. He was genuinely awed by her talents (she was a sculptor as well as a recording artist) and  was proud to introduce her to brother Brian.  Christine was amazing.

I know a lot of people are a bit hostile to Karen. I didn't feel that way. She was highly complex, had a very difficult, abusive childhood and was really funny. Dennis described her (during a bad period) as "really entertaining." They both were. And they both "gave as good as they got". Later in her life she was an animal activist.

Not long ago, I was watching a DVD of the oft-forgotten '70s TV show, Harry-O (starring David Janssen)... anyway, in the pilot episode, I saw that Karen had an acting role, and I nearly did a spit-take. Made me wonder how many TV show/movie sets Denny may have visited with Karen around that time.

I'm not certain how many sets he visited. Obviously, she was on the BB special with the SNL cast, and in "Almost Summer" - Sean Penn's break out movie.

I used to hear the stories about her visiting the studio in Santa Monica and those were not dull events. I happened to be driving past one day doing an errand for work (seriously) when she jumped out of her sea foam green Mercedes, blonde hair flying, and she was hard to miss - the perfect look at that time.  Chris Kable or Ed Roach would know a lot more.

  Sean Penn was not in Almost Summer.  Karen was, that was 1978.  Penn was in Taps in 1981.  The movie you are thinking of was Fast Times At Ridgemont High (1982).  He played the surfer dude, Jeff Spicoli.  It was considered his break through movie.  You got that part right.  I thought Taps was better.  My favorite of his early roles was Falcon and the Snowman.

John, do we have a thread like this at PSF?  Some of these threads need to be updated.

Such a timely thread.  I got a windfall inheritance of about $75,000.  Add in the physical possessions he left behind... the mind boggles.  He was a collector of Elvis.  I now have about 100 titles and box sets.  He loved The Beach Boys.  Nobody in my family wanted that, so now I have doubles of many things, but filled in a few holes.  Mostly the 1990 two-fers that I had sold off after the 2000 upgrades were released.  I had to slim down my collection of Cd and vinyl when I moved from California to New York in 1998.  Now I have them back again.  He had some of the Animals titles I didn't have, including the rare Eric is Here Cd.  It was a thrill to finally get the Zombies Heaven box.  It would take a lot of tapping to tell everything.  2016 was the best year of adding to my collection, ever.

So, what have I bought recently?  That would be a long list, as well.  I got some new rugs and lots of stuff for making life beautiful around the house.  Some books, including the Carl book I passed on when it first came out.  I'm thinking about getting the Dennis book so I can finally read it, but still hoping for Jon to revise and get it published again.  On the Cd/vinyl front, The Beach Boys new one is blowing my mind.  Better in many ways than the Pepper's and Flowers in the Dirt boxes, though the packaging is off the charts on both of those.  The job Mark and Alan did on Sunshine tomorrow is one of the most remarkable things they have ever given us.  To say listen with new ears is an understatement.

Got the first two Spirit albums that Steve Hoffman mastered for reissue - he is doing the set of four by the original band.  Can't wait to get Clear, my favorite of the bunch.  Filling in the holes of my Iron and Wine vinyl collection.  I got 18th row center for Iron and Wine's tour for the new album in November.  Sam hasn't put out a new solo album since Ghost on Ghost, so that's on pre-order.  As is a new Chris Hillman in September, and something Steve Winwood is releasing - a two Cd of live stuff covering his whole career.  Two of the best things released just last month are Steve Miller Band's Recall the Beginning...a journey from eden and Rock Love - both of which have been released for the first time on Cd in Japan mini-sleeves.  I've been buying some of the now legal boots coming out of the Uk: Mannassas' Amsterdam broadcast from 1972, two Richie Furay shows from My Father's Place (Long Island, New York) in 1976 and 1978, and a great old Tom Petty from a show taped when he was just starting out - something I've had on vinyl since the late 70's.  Last but certainly not least:  the fantastic release of Laura Nyro's first two albums in mono for the first time on Cd.

Better stop now.  My posting time is being hampered by vacationing and planning trips for later in the year.  Time consuming spending money...

The best idea is to like what you post wherever you post what you post.  And best to be happy while you are doing it.

Using your method, I could take care of every day of the week with one album, one song.  From Laura Nyro and Labelle's

That's the original track-listing, but I have all of her albums as Japanese Mini-Lps, and you know how they like to add on
unreleased bonus tracks... So, we also get to hear, "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing"/ "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural
Woman"/ "Ooh Child" and a fabulous new version of "Up On the Roof" - from another album I'd be sure to take, Christmas
and the beads of sweat.  These favorites lists always cause me to think too much.  How can I limit it to seven or one-hundred?

Just too many to list, and whittle down to fit in a small space.  I would need a big island with a large music room.  I can't imagine
not having Laura's first seven albums, and the live ones.  Then which Beach Boys albums can I live without?  Same with The Beatles,
Brian's stuff, The Byrds and Buffalo Springfield (and all the records that stem from the original members of both) - that's a very very
long list in itself!  Some of Nilsson's albums (hell, I would want the box set to have the three bonus discs of rare stuff), and all of Bobbie
Gentry's.  I would have to include most of the only cat that would make the grade  this century, Mr. Sam Beam, or as he's commonly known,
Iron and Wine.  Carole King, Swing Out Sister, The Rascals, Simon and Garfunkel (and most of their solo albums), Steve Miller Band - at least
six of his early albums, including the vinyl only Journey..., so that means a turntable would be needed - fit that into my kit-bag.  It would
just go on and on, John.  How do you guys come up with all of these lists?  Soon as I hit post, a dozen more will come to mind...

Mari's other pick turned out to be of great interest.  Jay Som is an artist on the horizon.  I played the whole album.  This is not so different than what Jesca Hoop does.  I love Swing Out Sister, and the Som Band reminds me a bit of that.  This could grow on me.  It is instantly likeable!  Morning music - a walk in the air.  I have listened to some of the Turn Into album from 2016 - not official.  Some unfinished music, and stuff I guess you could call outtakes that didn't make the debut.

That was in the early afternoon, a couple of days ago (when you first posted).  After dinner and some Tv-time, I came right back and played a bunch of the live stuff.  As I said to you that night, Mari, I have some videos to put up, but the need for sleep got in the way.  Will get them up soon.

"Bus Song" - after playing the album, I played some of the tracks she and her band have on youtube live.  This is one powerful song.  Love the oriental flavor.  Live, I see they are playing guitars, but listening, some of it sounds like they are using Japanese instruments.  I have yet gone looking for lyric sheets and what they are using on the studio sessions.  It might be a dulcimer.  You can get that kind of sound from one.  I keyed in her name, and couldn't find very much about her or the band.

Oo -#3, "Remain" - like mid-70's Joni...excellent.  "Billion Dogs" has my toes tapping.  Great guitar at the end of "One More Time, Please" - yes, more please.  "Baybee" - watched the official video, then a live version.  Very very good tune.

Where is that posted?  Groovy Songs from the Sixties?  I want to add it to the Sunshine Pop thread at PSF.  I know the artist, but have never heard the album.  Got to check more of Szabo's music.

I started on the album (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNJ95ZDCi0w) but gave up quickly. Browsing through it later, the lesser known stuff comes off best, maybe for that reason. But it's all a matter of taste. However, "Are You There" is worth the price of admission alone.

"Are You There" turned out to be the best one, far and away.  Too many of the others were way to common "things to listen to while pushing a shopping cart" types.  I played some of his other tracks, and will investigate more later.  He is a name I have heard for years, without giving it much of a chance.

The Gas track had very interesting visuals, but musically goes on too long.  I know you like experimental/electronic/ambient.  Not the kind of thing I would sit back and play with my eyes closed.  I've tried to get into Krautrock/kosmisch music before when Josh brought up Can.  More disturbing on my nerves, than relaxing.  I listen to some of Eno's stuff as background sometimes, but think his Rock music is much better.  I love Roxy Music.  Wish he would have stayed with them.
