Title: Unreleased Track Information Station
Post by: Dunderhead on December 29, 2010, 05:03:34 PM
Alright, there are so many BB songs out there, it really feels daunting, and there doesn't seem to be a good place just listing what everything is and when it was done in a chronological order. So starting with Smiley Smile I went through AGD's site (which is a fantastic resource) and looked for unreleased songs, searched for old threads about them, tried to come up with their status. I'm hoping that you guys can help, feel free to edit this list with more accurate information if you know it. I just thought it would be a good guide to all the unreleased material. Also, sorry if this goes against the no-downloads policy. This is meant as nothing more than a cross reference of outtakes and unreleased materials with the tracklists of official/unofficial releases.

Pet Sounds Sessions:
Stella By Starlight/How Deep Is The Ocean/Three Blind Mice:
October 15th, 1966. All three Circulate on Unsurpassed Masters Volume 11. These were recorded early in the Pet Sounds sessions along with The Little Girl I Once Knew. The Vocals on the former two are by Dick Reynolds rather than any of the BB.

Trombone Dixie:
November 1st. Released on Pet Sounds Sessions along with pretty much every other PS fragment you could hope to hear.

Smiley Smile Sessions:
Good News:
Recorded June 11, 1967. Does not circulate. Alan Boyd has said this is not in the tape vault.

Hawaiian Song:
Part of Little Pad

Good Time Mama:
Recorded June 25-26. Does not circulate. Alan Boyd has said this is not in the tape vault. Possibly working title for She's Going Bald?

Untitled Song:
Recorded July 6. Does not circulate. No clue as to what this is.

Stereo Smiley Smile:
True stereo mixes of Vegetables and Heroes and Villains are on Hawthorne. A seemingly true stereo mix of Fall Breaks also circulates, but everything else exists only in faux-stereo as far as I know.

Wild Honey Sessions:
With A Little Help From My Friends:
Recorded September 23rd. Circulates. A cover of the Beatles song.

Untitled Song:
October 11-12. Does Not Circulate. No clue what this is.

The Letter:
October 25th. Circulates. Cover of Box Tops song.

Game of Love:
October 25th, 26th. Does Not Circulate. Cover of The Mindbenders Song.

Lonely Days:
October 28th, 31st. Circulates, officially released on Hawthorne CA. A brief 50 second fragment.

Been Way Too Long:
October 28th; November 1st, 1967; July 25-26, 1968. Circulates on GV Boxset and Smiley Smile/Wild Honey Twofer. A lead vocal is rumored to have been done, but is lost/unheard.

Tune #L:
November 28th. Does Not Circulate. Dennis Wilson song, likely exists.

Stereo Wild Honey:
No idea if this is possible or not. There's a true stereo Let The Wind Blow on Hawthorne, and a stereo Country Air circulates. There are fan mixes available of several of the other songs on a boot Smiley Smile And Wild Honey - Stereo.

Friends Sessions:
Untitled Song #1:
No Date. Does Not Circulate.

You're As Cool As You Can Be:
No Date. Does Not Circulate. Interested to know more about this one. Couldn't find any posts about it in the forum archives.

Be Here In The Morning [First Version]:
March 6th, 1968. Does Not Circulate. No vocals, track only, very brief fragment. Was redone March 29th as the released version.

Our Happy Home:
March 20th. Does Not Circulate. Couldn't find any info on this, is it possible this was a working title for When A Man Needs a Woman?

New Song:
March 26th. Circulates on Secret Smile. "Spanish Guitar" instrumental, sometimes included on SMiLE boots as "Doves of Peace" or "Indian Wisdom"

Mono Friends:
A mono mix of the song Friends is available on "20 More Good Vibrations". Otherwise Wild Honey was the last album to be mixed into mono.

20/20 Sessions:
Walk On By:
May 26th. Circulates, officially released on Friend/20/20 twofer. Cover of the Burt Bacharach song.

We're Together Again:
May 27th, 29th; September 3rd, 5th, 6th. Circulates on Friends/20/20 twofer.

Dennis Wilson "Unknown Title":
June 7th, 26th. Does Not Circulate. No info on this one.

Ol' Man River:
June 10th. Circulates, released on Friends/20/20 Twofer another, slower version appears on Hawthorne. Cover of the famous song.

A Time To Live In Dreams:
November 1st. Circulates, released on Hawthorne. Dennis Wilson demo.

The Nearest Faraway Place vocals:
November 18th. Does Not Circulate. Had no idea vocals were done for this song, never heard a version with lyrics. According to AGD these are wordless background vocals.

Sunflower Sessions:
San Miguel:
January 9th, 13th, 22nd, 24th, 27th, 29th. Circulates, released on the Good Vibrations Box.

What Can The Matter Be?:
February 24th; May 24th. Does Not Circulate. MBE posted in an old thread: "On the former: the personnel are listed as Carl, Dennis, Alan, Bruce, Michael, and Roger Neumann (horn player/arranger), plus contractor Jon Parks.  Carl's the "leader" of the session, but that doesn't rule out it being a Dennis song, or a Brian song, because Carl was the leader of the session for Brian & Mike's "All I Wanna Do", and Bruce and Carl were listed as leaders for some other Dennis songs.  I really don't know, as I've never heard it." Seems to be the only info on this one.

Celebrate The News:
February 24-25. Officially released as B-side to Break Away. Available on Friends/20/20 Twofer.

Loop De Loop:
Various Sessions. Circulates, released on Endless Harmony among many other places. The circulating version is a remix and differs from this version however.

I'm Going Your Way:
July 14th. Circulates. Dennis rocker also called California Slide, shame this one wasn't released.

A World Of Peace Must Come:
It Came. http://www.amazon.com/World-Peace-Must-Come/dp/B001CLG6UE/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1293676799&sr=1-1

Soulful Old Man Sunshine:
August 29th; September 5th; November 6th, 9th. Circulates, released on Endless Harmony among other places.

Walkin':
October 13th. Circulates (?). Sounds like Al singing, a version of "Back Home"? Not so sure on this one.

Games Two Can Play:
October 20th. Circulates on GV box set. Cutesy Brian song.

Untitled:
November 3rd, 10th. Does Not Circulate. No info on this one.

November 11th. Circulates. This is "At My Window".

Where Is She?:

Lady/Fallin' In Love:

Carnival/Over The Waves:
December, 1969; January 5th, 9th 1970. Circulates on the LandLocked boot. Carnival is a pretty apt title.

Untitled #3:
January 2nd, 1970. Does Not Circulate. No info on this one.

I Just Got My Pay:
January 5th. Circulates on GV Boxset.

Good Time:
January 7th. Released on Love You.

You Never Give Me Your Money:
January 7th. Does Not Circulate. Presumably a cover of The Beatles song, think I've heard this one is just a demo.

Back Home:
January 18th. Circulates on Get The Boot. Full version from the same sessions also circulates.

It's A New Day:
July 7-8. Circulates on Get The Boot. I've heard this was for a Shampoo Commercial, not sure what the deal with it is.

"Games Two Can Play" can be found in better quality on the box set, as well.

Really nice list, though - this helps immensely when sorting non-album stuff.

Edit: A few errors here and there, it should be noted - not to discourage you from working further, as you've done really well thus far. A few things I noticed -

"Dirty" version of "Ding Dang" circulates, assuming there aren't two versions.
"I Just Got My Pay" is also on the box set.

Yeah I'm sure there are plenty errors. I'm in fact hoping I'm wrong and that there's more information available on some of these. Post any corrections or additions you have and I'll edit them into the op. Hopefully we can make a definitive guide so we can all start getting our collections under control.

Silly Walls:
Unknown Date. Does Not Circulate. Brian Wilson demo for a Spring song.

Circulates. David Sandler does the lead. Either that or it's Brian sped up.

The 1974 Shortnin' Bread is what has popped up on boots for the Adult/Child material, IIRC.

The "dirty" version of Ding Dang is also titled "Rollin' Up To Heaven" and was recorded a year after DD.

This is why I love this board. Nerdia in excelsis.

Sorry I don't have anything useful to add except my encouragement.

Added up to LA sessions and made some corrections. There are so many songs that I'd love to know more about. Like Ride Arabian. Ride. So if you know what the track is, post a description and I'll add it in. I'll go through and do like the Bamboo sessions at some point as well.

"Dirty" version of "Ding Dang" circulates, assuming there aren't two versions.
"I Just Got My Pay" is also on the box set.

Are you saying the dirty version of Ding Dang is the one on Love You?

Stereo Smiley Smile:
A true stereo mix may not ever be possible. True stereo mixes of Vegetables and Heroes and Villains are on Hawthorne. A seemingly true stereo mix of Fall Breaks also circulates, but everything else exists only in faux-stereo as far as I know.

I've heard the album in full - if unmixed - stereo, so I'd say a full stereo mix is entirely possible.

Tune #L:
November 28th. Does Not Circulate. Dennis Wilson song, don't know anything else.

An AFM sheet exists.

Be Here In The Morning [First Version]:
March 6th, 1968. Does Not Circulate. No vocals, track only. Was redone March 29th as the released version.

 A very short partial track.

Ol' Man River:
June 10th. Circulates, released on Friends/20/20 Twofer. Cover of the famous song.

Also on Hawthorne CA.

Walkin':
June 18-19. Circulates on Get The Boot?? Not so sure about this one. Version of Back Home maybe?

Nothing like "Back Home", to my ears, but BW recycled a riff for TLOS.

The Nearest Faraway Place vocals:
November 18th. Does Not Circulate. Had no idea vocals were done for this song, never heard a version with lyrics.

My impression is that the vocals recorded were wordless bgs.

Loop De Loop:
Various Sessions. Circulates, released on Endless Harmony among many other places.

Released in remixed and partly re-recorded form: the 1969 original remains unreleased.

Susie Cincinnati:
December 24th. Circulates, released on 15 Big Ones.

... and two different B sides.

Lady/Fallin' In Love:
December 26th; January 26th, 1970. Officially released as B-Side to Sound of Free. Available on Summer Love Songs.

SLS release is a stereo remix.

Carnival/Over The Waves:
No Date. Circulates on the LandLocked boot. Carnival is a pretty apt title.

There are three session dates for this - two exact - on 10452. Look again.  :)

You Never Give Me Your Money:
January 7th. Does Not Circulate. Cover of The Beatles song, think I've heard this one is just a demo.

Not circulating as far as I know, and the assumption it's the Beatles song is based entirely on the title (granted, it's a good assumption).

Back Home:
January 18th. Circulates on Get The Boot. Demo, with lyrics about an electric car being stolen. Full version from the same sessions also circulates.

Congratulations, you just retitled "Walkin'" as "Back Home". Two entirely different songs.  ;D

Surf's Up Sessions:
Old Movie/Barnyard Blues
March 15th, 1971. Neither Circulates. Dennis Wilson Demos.

"Old Movie" was a catch-all DW title for works in progress: this version of "OM" became "4th Of July" (as it says on my site): here's the actual entry on the 1971 gigs & sessions page, before you edited it -

15 - Dennis Wilson session - Old Movie (= 4th Of July)/Barnyard Blues [demos]

Barbara:
Date Unknown. Circulates on Endless Harmony. Dennis Wilson Demo.

An approximate date for the demo is listed on 10452.

"Telephone Backgrounds (On A Clear Day)":
Date Unknown. Does Not Circulate. Some type of Carl Wilson Moog Experiments.

As above an approx. date is listed on 10452.

(Wouldn't It Be Nice) To Live Again:
May 23rd. Does Not Circulate. Unreleased Dennis Wilson song  >:(. Cover version available by Adam Marsland on Long Promised Road: Songs of Dennis and Carl Wilson. BB Version is reported to be around 7 minutes long and ends with an instrumental jam.

Version I heard is nothing like 7 minutes long, unless I lost track of time while listening.

Silly Walls:
Unknown Date. Does Not Circulate. Brian Wilson demo for a Spring song.

Has been in general circulation since the early 80s, date - to within a week - is on 10452.

CATP Sessions:
Spark In The Dark
January 21st. Does Not Circulate. The title of this would link it to Funky Pretty, apparently this is a demo that would morph into "Chain Reaction of Love" later.

Nothing whatsoever to do with the Holland track, Brian noodling on the piano and throwing out known riffs ("Loop") and future riffs ("CROL")

Rooftop Harry:
April 15th. Does Not Circulate. Supposedly Exists.

Exists, unless someone is stringing me a line.

Canyon Summer:
No Date. Does Not Circulate. An Al Jardine Song?

Aprox date (month/year) on 10452.

Pattycake:
No Date. Apparently this was never even recorded.

As above.

Honeycomb:
No Date. Does Not Circulate. No Info.

Approx. date and info in footnote on 10452.

Battle Hymn of the Republic:
No Date. Circulates on Get the Boot.

Two dates, one exact, listed on 10452.

Don't Let Me Go/You're Riding High On The Music/Our Life, Our Love, Our Land
No Dates. None of these circulate. No Info.

OK, it's like this - if a song on my gigs & sessions section is listed within a month with a date of ??, that means it was recorded during that month, date unknown, thus the date for all these songs is December 1974.

Come To The Sunshine:
No Date. Does Not Circulate. Cover of a Van Dykes Parks song, supposedly this is lost.

See comment above.

I appreciate what you're trying to do, and that you've used my site to do it, but a lot of your 'missing' info is actually on the very pages you've cut and pasted.

Thanks AGD. I'll fix all that soon. You've been a really great scholar on all this, I'm just doing my best to cross reference a couple of a couple of lists and I clearly missed a couple of things that were staring me right in the face. Sorry if it seems like I'm just doing a poor job stealing from your site, I'll be the first to admit that I am. I'm just trying to maybe organize things in a way that's a little easier to digest, so don't go too hard on me please.

That's also exciting that Smile Smile may still be mixed into stereo. I had gotten the impression that a lot was done during the mix down session for the album directly onto the final master. Of course I had nothing to go on besides a rudimentary understanding of the recording process and some old posts in the archive, so I'm happy to be told otherwise.

I often feel like if only I could get my BB collection in order my life would be in order too, so I'm trying to get over the hump and finally do it and I thought it might be equally useful to all my fellow nerds. Keep posting corrections and additions and I'll keep adding them.

BTW, there are some 'archive' tracks that are unreleased for a very good reason.

They suck.  ;D

Keep posting and I'll correct anything amiss, hopefully with somewhat better grace than I've managed thus far. Currently I'm up to my ass in late 18th century cricket scorecards (don't ask...) and any distraction is not only welcomed but sat down, fed a huge meal and given a bed for the night.  :)

It's on "Get The Boot" as "Rolling up to Heaven". It's dirty, the main line is Al singing "Alley oop! Whoaaaa! F*ck her! Big tits!" Hope this helps.  ;D

No big deal - possibly the most famous son of my hometown* is the one hardly anyone knows about now, William "Silver Billy" Beldham (1766-1862) who played first class cricket from 1787-1821 and was generally considered the best batsman of his era. He's my profile pic, taken when he was about 92. Been researching him for, oh maybe five years, got an important source book for Christmas so now I'm revising some info.

[* - others are Mike Hawthorne, Graham Thorpe, Sir Peter Peers and the guy who wrote "Rock Of Ages", name escapes me right now)

I had heard from someone (probably Earle or Alan Boyd) that "Dr. Tom" was a rewrite a la "Cottonfields" of the Kingston Trio's "Tom Dooley".  Apparently not as good, though.

There's a whole bunch more unreleased tracks from '78-'81, I think we talked about several of them in other threads.  Key tracks from the KTSA-LA sessions would be "Calendar Girl," "California Feelin'", "I Will Always Love You," "Surfer Suzie", "Smokey Places", "Goin' To The Beach"...what else am I forgetting?

Right... I was just thinking those were from '81.  I probably should have just thrown those in, with the list.  Well put "Bucks" and "Sweetie" in there too.  Then you've got "At The Hop" (shudder) and "Oh Lord" from Beach Boys '85.  What else?  There's the hamburger sessions.  "Stevie" has to be included at the very least.

Of course [slaps forehead] this is all on AGD's site.  Don't hit me AGD!

A little surprised that released songs were included on a list of "Unreleased" tracks at the top of the thread.  Not sure why.  And while they still remain released, many of those tracks have circulated on boots for many years. Thanks to AGD for including the sources. Maybe the author of the thread could re-compile/update the list complete with sources(?)

Geez, "Sea Cruise" is now unavailable on a formally released CD. It was out for awhile, then discontinued. If it weren't released, albeit briefly, it would be a good addition to the boot list above! Too bad "On Broadway" wasn't recorded and released earlier on 15 Big Ones. And "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" too somewhere.

It does, which is why I was shocked to learn that it dates from 1973, and RUTH dates from summer 1974. Then again, DD has a similar production to the Spring version of Shortenin' Bread, which was not only recorded the same time, but also erroneously appear on boots of 1976 material!

Yeah... but the 'leggers didn't know what it was, plus it had Carl's lead added - it's usually listed as an LA outtake, but you can clearly hear the girls on bvs, and Brian doing the bass vocal.

Isn't that Brian bass vocal of the same vintage as the Carl lead? The Adult Child sessions right? Or am I wrong about both?

Because that Brian vocal sure doesn't sound like 1973 to me, sounds more like 1976 or 1977.

As for what's mono, what's stereo, and where, may I suggest this site - mono/stereo (http://www.esquarterly.com/bellagio/monostereo.html) - which, if I do say so myself, is the proverbial canine's gentalia.

There's also a version of "Calendar Girl" that was recorded at Criteria Studios, at the very beginning of the sessions for L.A. Light.  Seems like someone has played it for me before, and it wasn't at all the quality I remembered it being in the studio.  The session was a little fuzzy for me, because Dennis was working on "Love Surrounds Me" in a smaller studio across the parking lot, and kept dragging me out of Brian's session to help him set up.
I kept returning to watch and listen to Brian, though, as he was back in top form.  Some of the guys, like Bobby & Carly, hadn't experienced Brian in the studio in the old days, and were amazed at some of the things he was doing, like changing the tape speed to turn Carly's organ into a calliope.  Sadly, something happened to Brian's spirits on the second day, and he slipped into a deep, deep funk.  It was that same day that a call was placed to Bruce...

The version of "Calendar Girl" from 1978 that was doing the rounds was, to be polite about it, somewhat leaden. It was on the tape the band played for CBS boss Walter Yetnikoff (the songs on the tape (dated incorrectly August 28th) were a mixture of Criteria recordings - "California  Feeling", "Brian's Back" & "Calendar Girl" - and material recorded earlier in LA at  Brother and Western: "Baby Blue" (the Bambu version), "Looking Down The Coast/Monterey" & "Santa Ana Winds" (original version)) which provoked his legendary comment "Gentlemen, I think I've just been f***ed !"

Believe me, though, there was absolutely nothing "leaden" about what Brian began recording...  I was so surprised he was starting off with an 'oldie' again, but the song was really cooking, and he was so energized he seemed like he was back in his 20's!  However, I doubt that the rough vocals remained for long, and agree that what I've heard that now exists from those sessions has little or no resemblance to what I heard in the studio.  But the same can be said for the early versions of songs from 15 Big Ones.  I've got some rough mixes of early tracks, and it's hard to believe that they evolved into the final mixes that were released!

Is it just me, or was that a severe overreation from Yetnikoff? I've heard everything on it aside from the 1978 CG (and I might have heard that too, as I have 2 versions, unless there are actually 3), and it's not that bad. LDTC/M should've been released for sure.

You've just intrigued me immensely. How different did they sound, esp. the 15 BO cuts? Also, which cut was it that Brian altered the organ sound?

There are the single versions on the GV box that are supposed to be different mixes but only sound marginally different. Do any other mixes exist of 15 Big Ones Songs in circulation?

The version of "Calendar Girl" from 1978 that was doing the rounds was, to be polite about it, somewhat leaden. It was on the tape the band played for CBS boss Walter Yetnikoff (the songs on the tape (dated incorrectly August 28th) were a mixture of Criteria recordings - "California  Feeling", "Brian's Back" & "Calendar Girl" - and material recorded earlier in LA at  Brother and Western: "Baby Blue" (the Bambu version), "Looking Down The Coast/Monterey" & "Santa Ana Winds" (original version)) which provoked his legendary comment "Gentlemen, I think I've just been fodido !"

Is it just me, or was that a severe overreation from Yetnikoff? I've heard everything on it aside from the 1978 CG (and I might have heard that too, as I have 2 versions, unless there are actually 3), and it's not that bad. LDTC/M should've been released for sure.
rian altered the organ sound?

Well, iffn I'd just agreed to pay someone $8,500,000 for their musical services, and they played me that... I think I'd say a lot more than he did. I'd probably grab the nearest band member and start bouncing their head off the nearest wall.  ;D

I dunno... LDTC/M to me was better than much of LA as was Santa Ana Winds. Same with California Feeling, even though it was the version with Bruce. I can't imagine anybody hearing BB at that stage and not loving it. I can't imagine how those tracks got left out, and yet Full Sail, Sumahama, Goin' South and that version of SB made it out. I mean, the contract stated a certain amount of Brian involvement, yet everything he did on the album was cut out!

I sort of agree, though I wouldn't put down those other songs, personally. I definitely think Looking Down the Coast, Santa Ana Winds, California Feeling(though sped up a little from what I've heard) would have been great additions to that album. I wouldn't cut anything except maybe Here Comes the Night, or rather I would have shortened HCTN to the single version, so that it doesn't dominate the album so much.

But maybe it wasn't a case of them thinking that the quality of those songs was bad so much as a case of  them deciding on a general 'lite rock' feel that relatively peppy numbers like Santa Ana Winds and Looking Down the Coast didn't fit.

"I would put On Broadway on AGD's list of songs that should be buried, not released. "
Nah, I'm with Mikie on this one.  In fact, it is on my 15 Big Rock'n'Roll Ones!

Don't you think Yetnikoff was expecting a 1965 version of the Beach Boys? I agree that some of the unreleased stuff from LA is better than SOME of the released tracks.

Yeah, I'm with Smilin' Ed regarding "On Broadway".  And the "hot" mix of "Rock 'n Roll" Music should come out some day. And a no-brainer on the unreleased slow version of "Big Sur". That one shoulda come out on the '93 Good Vibrations box set or Endless Harmony or Hawthorne!

I am all for them releasing everything, as I would like to hear it, however if I had to pick, I would want them to release stuff that has not been booted first.

It is surprising that the slow Big Sur hasn't been released yet.

I would think that Yetnikoff was thinking he was running a record company, the whole point of which is to make money, a LOT of money (cocaine is expensive, after all)....and this sounded nothing like magic sales of millions of albums. Did the product go gold, platinum or.....lead balloon?

Isn't "Rolling Up to Heaven" a bootlegger title?

Nope - first sighting was in Nick Kent's 1975 NME BW profile. Pays to be old sometimes.  ;D

Does anyone else get the feeling there was a real girl named Ruth and this was a tribute to her attributes?
