Alright, there are so many BB songs out there, it really feels daunting, and there doesn't seem to be a good place just listing what everything is and when it was done in a chronological order. So starting with Smiley Smile I went through AGD's site (which is a fantastic resource) and looked for unreleased songs, searched for old threads about them, tried to come up with their status. I'm hoping that you guys can help, feel free to edit this list with more accurate information if you know it. I just thought it would be a good guide to all the unreleased material. Also, sorry if this goes against the no-downloads policy. This is meant as nothing more than a cross reference of outtakes and unreleased materials with the tracklists of official/unofficial releases.

Pet Sounds Sessions:
Stella By Starlight/How Deep Is The Ocean/Three Blind Mice:
October 15th, 1966. All three Circulate on Unsurpassed Masters Volume 11. These were recorded early in the Pet Sounds sessions along with The Little Girl I Once Knew. The Vocals on the former two are by Dick Reynolds rather than any of the BB.

Trombone Dixie:
November 1st. Released on Pet Sounds Sessions along with pretty much every other PS fragment you could hope to hear.

Recorded June 11, 1967. Does not circulate. Alan Boyd has said this is not in the tape vault.

True stereo mixes of Vegetables and Heroes and Villains are on Hawthorne. A seemingly true stereo mix of Fall Breaks also circulates, but everything else exists only in faux-stereo as far as I know.

Stereo Wild Honey:
No idea if this is possible or not. There's a true stereo Let The Wind Blow on Hawthorne, and a stereo Country Air circulates. There are fan mixes available of several of the other songs on a boot Smiley Smile And Wild Honey - Stereo.

What Can The Matter Be?:
February 24th; May 24th. Does Not Circulate. MBE posted in an old thread: "On the former: the personnel are listed as Carl, Dennis, Alan, Bruce, Michael, and Roger Neumann (horn player/arranger), plus contractor Jon Parks.  Carl's the "leader" of the session, but that doesn't rule out it being a Dennis song, or a Brian song, because Carl was the leader of the session for Brian & Mike's "All I Wanna Do", and Bruce and Carl were listed as leaders for some other Dennis songs.  I really don't know, as I've never heard it." Seems to be the only info on this one.

"Games Two Can Play" can be found in better quality on the box set, as well.

Really nice list, though - this helps immensely when sorting non-album stuff.

Edit: A few errors here and there, it should be noted - not to discourage you from working further, as you've done really well thus far. A few things I noticed -

"Dirty" version of "Ding Dang" circulates, assuming there aren't two versions.
"I Just Got My Pay" is also on the box set.

Yeah I'm sure there are plenty errors. I'm in fact hoping I'm wrong and that there's more information available on some of these. Post any corrections or additions you have and I'll edit them into the op. Hopefully we can make a definitive guide so we can all start getting our collections under control.

 The 1974 Shortnin' Bread is what has popped up on boots for the Adult/Child material, IIRC.

The "dirty" version of Ding Dang is also titled "Rollin' Up To Heaven" and was recorded a year after DD.

Added up to LA sessions and made some corrections. There are so many songs that I'd love to know more about. Like Ride Arabian. Ride. So if you know what the track is, post a description and I'll add it in. I'll go through and do like the Bamboo sessions at some point as well.


Are you saying the dirty version of Ding Dang is the one on Love You?

I've heard the album in full - if unmixed - stereo, so I'd say a full stereo mix is entirely possible.

I appreciate what you're trying to do, and that you've used my site to do it, but a lot of your 'missing' info is actually on the very pages you've cut and pasted.

"Mike" has been in circulation since the early 80s, albeit as a poor quality dub from the MIU promo film. "Santa" has been around about as long as a quality studio outtake.


"DBC" has circulated for something like 25+ years.


Has been available of boots of the 1977 Xmas album for about 20-25 years.


Released on Ultimate Christmas, remixed and partly re-recorded.


Also released in 1998 on UC.


Released on the Wilsons Hey Santa album in 1993.

Thanks AGD. I'll fix all that soon. You've been a really great scholar on all this, I'm just doing my best to cross reference a couple of a couple of lists and I clearly missed a couple of things that were staring me right in the face. Sorry if it seems like I'm just doing a poor job stealing from your site, I'll be the first to admit that I am. I'm just trying to maybe organize things in a way that's a little easier to digest, so don't go too hard on me please.

That's also exciting that Smile Smile may still be mixed into stereo. I had gotten the impression that a lot was done during the mix down session for the album directly onto the final master. Of course I had nothing to go on besides a rudimentary understanding of the recording process and some old posts in the archive, so I'm happy to be told otherwise.

I often feel like if only I could get my BB collection in order my life would be in order too, so I'm trying to get over the hump and finally do it and I thought it might be equally useful to all my fellow nerds. Keep posting corrections and additions and I'll keep adding them.

BTW, there are some 'archive' tracks that are unreleased for a very good reason.

They suck.  ;D

No big deal - possibly the most famous son of my hometown* is the one hardly anyone knows about now, William "Silver Billy" Beldham (1766-1862) who played first class cricket from 1787-1821 and was generally considered the best batsman of his era. He's my profile pic, taken when he was about 92. Been researching him for, oh maybe five years, got an important source book for Christmas so now I'm revising some info.

I had heard from someone (probably Earle or Alan Boyd) that "Dr. Tom" was a rewrite a la "Cottonfields" of the Kingston Trio's "Tom Dooley".  Apparently not as good, though.

There's a whole bunch more unreleased tracks from '78-'81, I think we talked about several of them in other threads.  Key tracks from the KTSA-LA sessions would be "Calendar Girl," "California Feelin'", "I Will Always Love You," "Surfer Suzie", "Smokey Places", "Goin' To The Beach"...what else am I forgetting?

Rollin' Up To Heaven was recorded after Ding Dang? With all the synths it sounds like DD was recorded much later than Rollin'...

A little surprised that released songs were included on a list of "Unreleased" tracks at the top of the thread.  Not sure why.  And while they still remain released, many of those tracks have circulated on boots for many years. Thanks to AGD for including the sources. Maybe the author of the thread could re-compile/update the list complete with sources(?)

Geez, "Sea Cruise" is now unavailable on a formally released CD. It was out for awhile, then discontinued. If it weren't released, albeit briefly, it would be a good addition to the boot list above! Too bad "On Broadway" wasn't recorded and released earlier on 15 Big Ones. And "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" too somewhere.

I would put On Broadway on AGD's list of songs that should be buried, not released.  ;D

It does, which is why I was shocked to learn that it dates from 1973, and RUTH dates from summer 1974. Then again, DD has a similar production to the Spring version of Shortenin' Bread, which was not only recorded the same time, but also erroneously appear on boots of 1976 material!

Yeah... but the 'leggers didn't know what it was, plus it had Carl's lead added - it's usually listed as an LA outtake, but you can clearly hear the girls on bvs, and Brian doing the bass vocal.

While Wild Honey was the last album to mixed entirely to stereo, singles continued to be mixed to mono - you mention Friends, but also Little Bird.  Was the Bluebirds/Never Learn Not to Love single issued in mono?

There's also a version of "Calendar Girl" that was recorded at Criteria Studios, at the very beginning of the sessions for L.A. Light.  Seems like someone has played it for me before, and it wasn't at all the quality I remembered it being in the studio.  The session was a little fuzzy for me, because Dennis was working on "Love Surrounds Me" in a smaller studio across the parking lot, and kept dragging me out of Brian's session to help him set up.
I kept returning to watch and listen to Brian, though, as he was back in top form.  Some of the guys, like Bobby & Carly, hadn't experienced Brian in the studio in the old days, and were amazed at some of the things he was doing, like changing the tape speed to turn Carly's organ into a calliope.  Sadly, something happened to Brian's spirits on the second day, and he slipped into a deep, deep funk.  It was that same day that a call was placed to Bruce...

The version of "Calendar Girl" from 1978 that was doing the rounds was, to be polite about it, somewhat leaden. It was on the tape the band played for CBS boss Walter Yetnikoff (the songs on the tape (dated incorrectly August 28th) were a mixture of Criteria recordings - "California  Feeling", "Brian's Back" & "Calendar Girl" - and material recorded earlier in LA at  Brother and Western: "Baby Blue" (the Bambu version), "Looking Down The Coast/Monterey" & "Santa Ana Winds" (original version)) which provoked his legendary comment "Gentlemen, I think I've just been f***ed !"

Believe me, though, there was absolutely nothing "leaden" about what Brian began recording...  I was so surprised he was starting off with an 'oldie' again, but the song was really cooking, and he was so energized he seemed like he was back in his 20's!  However, I doubt that the rough vocals remained for long, and agree that what I've heard that now exists from those sessions has little or no resemblance to what I heard in the studio.  But the same can be said for the early versions of songs from 15 Big Ones.  I've got some rough mixes of early tracks, and it's hard to believe that they evolved into the final mixes that were released!

Is it just me, or was that a severe overreation from Yetnikoff? I've heard everything on it aside from the 1978 CG (and I might have heard that too, as I have 2 versions, unless there are actually 3), and it's not that bad. LDTC/M should've been released for sure.

Well, iffn I'd just agreed to pay someone $8,500,000 for their musical services, and they played me that... I think I'd say a lot more than he did. I'd probably grab the nearest band member and start bouncing their head off the nearest wall.  ;D

I dunno... LDTC/M to me was better than much of LA as was Santa Ana Winds. Same with California Feeling, even though it was the version with Bruce. I can't imagine anybody hearing BB at that stage and not loving it. I can't imagine how those tracks got left out, and yet Full Sail, Sumahama, Goin' South and that version of SB made it out. I mean, the contract stated a certain amount of Brian involvement, yet everything he did on the album was cut out!

I sort of agree, though I wouldn't put down those other songs, personally. I definitely think Looking Down the Coast, Santa Ana Winds, California Feeling(though sped up a little from what I've heard) would have been great additions to that album. I wouldn't cut anything except maybe Here Comes the Night, or rather I would have shortened HCTN to the single version, so that it doesn't dominate the album so much.

But maybe it wasn't a case of them thinking that the quality of those songs was bad so much as a case of  them deciding on a general 'lite rock' feel that relatively peppy numbers like Santa Ana Winds and Looking Down the Coast didn't fit.

Don't you think Yetnikoff was expecting a 1965 version of the Beach Boys? I agree that some of the unreleased stuff from LA is better than SOME of the released tracks. 
 
 
 

Yeah, I'm with Smilin' Ed regarding "On Broadway".  And the "hot" mix of "Rock 'n Roll" Music should come out some day. And a no-brainer on the unreleased slow version of "Big Sur". That one shoulda come out on the '93 Good Vibrations box set or Endless Harmony or Hawthorne!

I am all for them releasing everything, as I would like to hear it, however if I had to pick, I would want them to release stuff that has not been booted first.

I would think that Yetnikoff was thinking he was running a record company, the whole point of which is to make money, a LOT of money (cocaine is expensive, after all)....and this sounded nothing like magic sales of millions of albums. Did the product go gold, platinum or.....lead balloon?
