Title: Best radio ad ever?
Post by: Mr. Cohen on September 27, 2010, 12:11:04 PM
Sorry for making a whole topic for this, but it deserves to be discussed: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s1cOmw4fBLw&feature=related

Is that the best radio ad ever?

I was thinking about what it would be like if they had done a commercial like this for Imagination:

"Momma's little baby loves shortenin', shortenin', momma's little baby loves shortenin' bread..."

Oh, I must have passed out after snorting that stuff.  I only got to listen to "Shortenin' Bread" seven times! ["South American" starts playing in the background]

Hey, what's this? There's a tropical drink in my hand, and I feel like I'm defying a little gravity.  Something beautiful is going on here...

Ha ha! I have this ad on a boot somewhere! Love how it implys that in 1972 your average Beach Boys fan was a toker. What would Mike say?!!

Wow that's...weird.  It sounded like Carl to me too at first.  Who is actually speaking, anybody of note?  It didn't sound like any of the other Beach Boys to me.

Off the top, here are my favorite Beach Boys radio ads:

1. Honda 55 radio ad.
2. Murry The K promo spots.
3. Radio spots found on SOT Unsurpassed Masters Vol. 12 (especially KOMA and
Dance, Dance, Dance promo spots).
4. SMiLE ad, late 1966. “We’re sure to sell a million units – in January”.
5. Wild Honey promo spot.
6. Sunflower promo spot.
7. Vote ’72 – voter registration spots - Dennis, Carl, Mike, Al, and Ricky.
8. Carl & The Passions promo spot.
9. Anti-drug radio message – Carl.
10. Toys for Tots radio ad(s).
11. Sunkist radio ad - Good Vibrations.
12. KPUK radio promo spot.

Wow, I have a pair of sunglasses from the Sunkist era. They are quite nice. Beach Boys logo on each temple.

I have the big ol' Sunkist beach ball and the shorts and the album. Don't have the sunglasses though!

Strictly speaking, not a radio ad. It was on a promo disc sent out to Capitol salesmen to acquaint them with the January 1967 releases.

I've never seen that promo disc, but if it exists, I'll bet it's worth some big $.

How about the KPUK ad; has anybody here heard that one?

I've only ever heard of one copy of this Capitol Promo LP in existence. Sold by Rockaway, from an Iowa collection they purchased, to a UK collector for around $600. Wish I'd bought it!  Maybe if I get over for the RFH Gershwin show, I'll go by his house and see it!

What is the KPUK ad? seems I've heard tell before, and not paid close enough attention.

And, by the way, I don't have either the S&S sunglasses, or the Sunkist ones.  If I did,I'd probably just do someting silly and break them while trying to screen the sun on my trip to London...

I have 60 second radio spots ( on promo reels) that I've never listened to for:

Surf's Up
Carl & the Passions
Holland
Friends/Smiley Smile
BBs/Bob Weir  Six Pack
Butterfield/Deep Purple/ BBs   Combo Talk
MIU
Made In The USA
BBs   CBS  5/7/79
plus an assortment of  Radio ads from 1981/82  for  Buffalo NY

I should really check them, but taking a chance on breaking the tape, would ruin it for me. Anyone got a foolproof suggestion for an old fool?

KPUK radio 7" single sized picture sleeve, red w/ black lettering. Picture of Brian eating his shoe. No record. Don't know if a record was ever intended for it. Peter knows.  :)

Ahh, The Borscht Boys. Peter was such a jokester!!
Found it just now while looking for my BBs In Concert Promo Radio Spots EP ( it has 10, 30 and 60 second spots) says " Use with Copy provided" which I unfortunately do not posess.
About the Sunflower promo spot:  Is this something you have on tape, and is it more than one spot?  My promo Ep has three bands, each of 60 seconds, but I have yet to listen to them to see what they are.
I just have to find a good (inexpensive) turntable!

have you heard  the BBs "Save The Children" promo spot?

Intended tracks were:

We Got Love - studio
Toys For Tots - radio spot to the tune of Little St. Nick
Rock And Roll Music  -'hot' mix
Pamela Jean
Auld Lang Syne - without Dennis' voice-over

It was Volume 6 of The Beach Boys Collectors Series, but production difficulties (I gather the plant burned down just before Christmas 1978) put an end to that.

That would have been a nice EP. At least he got "Hawthorne Hotshots" out. That was a good one, amongst others in the series......

Speaking of Capitol preview albums...forgive the quality but I just snapped a quick photo for this post...

My heart skipped a beat when I was leafing through a box of albums at a yard sale and saw this one, which had the headline "PREVIEW OF JANUARY ALBUMS from Captiol" screaming out at me. I thought for that brief moment is this really one of those with the Smile promo on it? I should have known from the clothing styles on the front, but on the back cover it was January of 1958...still a cool find, because it has the artists introducing each of the preview tracks from their forthcoming albums with a short announcement, and it has Sinatra, for example, plugging something from his classic Come Fly With Me album. So it's cool, and I think I may have another year in my collection, they're kind of rare...

But mention of that Capitol sales promo from '66 got me thinking of this and how I found it, and remember to keep an eye out for yard sales and flea markets and all of that. Capitol had numerous salesmen and radio stations+record shops to reach in 1966, and you never know what may be buried in that stack of Jackie Gleason and Mantovani LP's at your local yard sale...

I don't have an original Sunflower promo EP, but a friend of mine does. I was holding it in my hands one day and started to drool on it, so he took it away from me pretty quickly. It's a very rare record. I have the contents of it somewhere on a cassette, but I'd like to have an Mp3 file of it.

Don't think I've heard the "Save The Children" promo spot before.

Is there some really easy way to play these to my computer and upload them, for anyone that wants to hear them? ( Something I could do with a 70's turntable)
I'm talking easy like for a  simpleton, which it surely seems I am when it's a technology thing.
I mean, I could probably make cassette copies of stuff, but beyond that...
The Sunflower EP had no cover that I know of. The In Concert has the Indian on His Horse.
Save the Children, there MAY have been more than one issued; I have one sealed in a nice mailer that lists the artists on the outside, and I presumed it was the same as my open record, but looking at it now, I see that the artists listed on the record are somewhat different than the mailer. crap.
I posted some pics in the Media section.

So............I'm sure not all of us have all of the above promos.  Are you gonna offer Mp3 downloads for these, Bgas?  Or are we limited to looking at pictures of them?

Where's the guy who started this thread?  What's his favorite? There's more ads out there other than the "Carl & The Passions" promo.

tell me how, and I'll try.

Just a little update:
Spent all day working on my turntable and got it to work. Downloaded some form of Audacity, and have to figure that out, and then figure how to make it work so ya'll can have MP3's.
Listened to The Sunflower EP. the three bands are all 60 seconds each, but they play different song bits and the last one has more narration.
The Beach Boys In concert EP is just backing tracks, snippets of studio tracks, no live material. GV, SDT, Marcella, SU, WIBN, SJB, in that order, I think.  (Wish I had the the copy that was provided)
But I'm trying to get it together, so, Mikie Hold Yer breath!

Quote
...could Mike Love have approved this ad?

I think Mike gets a bum rap. Just because he was opposed to Van Dyke's lyrics doesn't mean that he was against marijuana or the burgeoning hippie culture, or even acid for that matter. Let's face it - Van Dyke's lyrics are very esoteric, and perhaps they weren't appropriate for the Beach Boys. If it wasn't for the harmonies, it would be easy to mistake most of the Smile as being the product of an entirely different band. Fact is, Mike wrote the psychedelically-tinged lyrics of "Good Vibrations", and it was a smash hit. Van Dyke wrote the lyrics to "Heroes and Villains" and it was a dud by the Beach Boy's standards.  So, was Mike right? Do you think "Surf's Up" could've been a hit on the radio? It certainly wasn't when the BBs released as single in the early 70s. By '67, the rock crowd was grooving to bands like The Doors, Big Brother and the Holding Company, the psychedelic Beatles, the Stones, and stuff like that. Does Van Dyke fit in that environment? Was Mike wrong in assuming that Van Dyke didn't?

I love Smile, but Mike's right - it's not that commercial. The BBs releasing Smile would've been like US Magazine (a celebrity rag) carrying articles written by James Joyce. No one would deny that Joyce was a great writer. But they would point out that US Magazine was the wrong environment to put it in, just as the BBs brand name would've been the wrong environment for Smile.

Remember, Mike wrote most of the lyrics to songs like "She's Goin' Bald". He knew what was up, that psychedelic music was in. He smoked pot and probably took acid (some claim he did). He went with the Beatles to India. And he knew that The Beatles would never have released lyrics like the ones Van Dyke wrote. Sure, some of John's lyrics had abstract concepts, but the references and the words he used were very accessible. He wasn't obliquely quoting mid-19th century folklore and stuff like that.

So what it comes down to is that Brian wanted to change the course of music with his supreme artistry, while Mike wanted to ride the same wave bands like The Beatles were riding, doing what was current and popular. Now, you can all act like you would've been iconoclastic 30 some odd years after the fact, but I think at the time most of you would have sided with someone like Mike. I don't see a radical streak in most people here.

The continuing saga of why I can't play the darn rekkids to mp3s:
we have 3 turntables here;
I tried fixing my old sony linear tracking one fiirst. thougt I had it working and then it completely shot craps; maybe I'll take it to the repair store today, so they can tell me to trash it.
we have two Technics servo whatever tables here. Both had the drive belts melted to the platters. so I ordered new ones, got them yesterday, and put them on today. It would seem that all the "servo" controls have leached out, or whatever they do. At 45 Mike sounds like he's at 78, at 33 he's got this really great fast and slow warble, but it's not really conducive to recording.
So, if I have to buy a used table, what has the least chance of being a crapper?
If I find the $$ to break down and buy a new one, what's the least expensive/most reliable?
Or if someone has one of those $5000 tables they really don't need anymore, send it my way....
Sorry to bore those of you not into hearing the records I have ( or those who really just don't care)

Get a direct drive Technics with a strobe to indicate perfect pitch.  Many are available used, and the classic Technics SL 1200 is still available new.

If a self identified "audiophile" tries to tell you that a belt drive turntable is superior to any of the direct drive Technics tables listed above, please politely advise said "audiophile" that he/she is full of s**t, then invite him/her to a controlled double blind listening test.

Or you can always just go for one of those new turntables with a usb output.  I have one and, though I'm sure it doesn't qualify as "audiophile quality" it works just fine.

Not certain why(maybe to save me from emotional trauma) but when I try to play the 15 minute version, the needle skates across the record!

1963 Capitol Records Sales meeting Demo for LDC. They even mention Rebel Without A Cause, as being written by Brian.

Brian moonlighted as a Hollywood scriptwriter when he was 12, 13 ?  Damn, never knew that. Still, Anita Loos was the same age when she started selling stuff to Griffith, so there's definitely a precedent.

I think they were referring to "A Young Man Is Gone". But when talking about the tracklist, they definitely say "Rebel Without a Cause"... So that was probably its working title at some point, and the title that was given to Capitol execs. Interesting.

Bump.
Posted a spot for the Tami Show.
30 seconds, Lesley Gore vocal, BBs involvement only because they're mentioned; still, kinda cool.
Have to dig around, see if I can find anymore stuff...

The only thing better than Carl doing an anti-drug PSA would have been if Dennis did one promoting abstinence.

I know you prepared this link for someone else, but I, being a shameless freeloader, saved the file to my laptop. Thank you, bgas!
Btw, I saved the MIU ad you posted last year too, it's more interesting than this one, no Tears in the Morning appearing (oddly) twice on both ends there.

Here's a joint ad for Magical Mystery Tour and Wild Honey from 1967.

If anyone has any other radio ads for Wild Honey I'd appreciate them. I'm also looking for ads for other capitol era albums. I will upload more radio promos from my collection today.

I was just about to aks if somebody could describe the Wild Honey ad, because I never heard that. So thanks for uploading it!! The song and sound sound so fresh right next to MMT in this ad. Reminds me how much I love that album (Wild Honey that is). Good ol' Rock'n'Roll
Is this the only known WH ad?

I want to say a stand alone WH ad exists but I am not in possession of it.

Here are the two radio promos for Summer In Paradise:

Thanks for these, ahoutman1! Interesting how the 2 SiP ads sound nearly the same, except the 1st one features Kokomo from the previous years. Also I've noticed that all the song snippets sound sped-up, in a semitone or 1/4 (maybe). Is it the way radio device plays the recordings or are they new mixes? Either way, good stuff, do post more. (Although bad/tame track choices on SIP, covers & all.)
