Anyone know what song this is?

Looks like they're playing an F. I can't play it with the thumb like that, just seems more comfortable to barr it.

When you play for terribly long periods of time, the thumb over the last string thing can relieve a lot of pain in your wrist.  You have to have fairly large hands to do it, I guess.  Rickenbackers are great for it, thin necks.

In the same picture, has anyone noticed how much cooler Al looks than the rest of them due to his shirt being un-tucked?

I don't like the way that looks actually.. makes him appear immature.

Though I must say that outfit brings alot of unwanted attention to Carl's baby-fat..

I'd say relaxed.

And for Carl....maybe he could've used some relaxed fitted pants.

I'm putting in a formal request for the picture of Brian in the 20/20 LP gatefold. The eye chart one. Can someone scan/post it?

Are their any more pictures in existance of the Zuma Beach stuff? The Smiley Smile / Wild Honey cd has the group shot in the ocean, and there's a few others floating around in books. Brian's beard topped Mike's at that point.

I'm sure you guys, being the Beach Boy-maniacs that you are, have seen these. I was just doing some google searches and saved the ones that seemed obscure to me -- so, just incase some of you don't have the time that I have (sad, eh?) to sit around and google search some BB photos, these are for you.

Oh, and on some of them, I'll have some questions, mainly about  what year is was taken.  So, if anyone knows, please answer.

Thanks!

LOL! Classic Brian Wilson. Wonder what he's thinking. If you think about it, this BB photo almost sums up their personality. Especially on Mike... always has to act ike he's got the biggest ____. LOL!

Never seen this one before.

Okay. Brian's hat in the previous picture is cool compared to Bruce's hippy headband. What year was this picture taken?

Californ-IA. What year was this picture taken?

A nice shot of the guys sitting on top of their records MINUS Johnston. He must've been busy writing songs for Barry Manilow. What year was this picture taken?

Obviously some article around the "brian is back" era.

Looks like Mike and Brian are playing ATARI or something. What year was this picture taken?

If you're trying to get someone into The Beach Boys, make sure they NEVER see this photo. I can picture VOLTRON in back of them. I really can. What year was this picture taken?

Mike Love needs to eat a meal. Brian looks out of it (I mean, REALLY, out of it). What year was this picture taken?

One of the last pictures the full BB band would take together before Dennis passes. Wonder how many themed baseball caps Mike owns.

Brian Wilson's robe has superpowers.

Al looks a little warmly dressed. What year was this picture taken?

Brian Wilson looks like he was put there by use of Photoshop. Am I right or is it real? What year was this picture taken?

What year was this picture taken?

The Beach Boys shooting a video called RIO with Duran Duran (not shown). What year was this picture taken?

Probably taken a little after Dennis' death.

What year was this picture taken? (and, what event?)

Oops. :D

BY THE WAY, if any of you have some rare photos to share, please post them.

Ok

This isn't gospel but my stab would be

1,2 1966, 3 1970, 4-7 1976, 8 1977, 9 1980, 10 1982/3, 11,12 1976, 13 1970 (and it certainly does look like he was added - he was on the CATP back cover as well), 14,15 1976/77, 16 1985, 17 1981?.

There or therabouts.

"Okay. Brian's hat in the previous picture is cool compared to Bruce's hippy headband. What year was this picture taken?"

Very late 1969 - early 1970.

Quote
"Californ-IA. What year was this picture taken?"

Looks like 1979 to me.

Quote
"A nice shot of the guys sitting on top of their records MINUS Johnston. He must've been busy writing songs for Barry Manilow. What year was this picture taken?"

1975.

Quote
"Obviously some article around the 'brian is back' era."

People Magazine, 1976.

Quote
"Looks like Mike and Brian are playing ATARI or something. What year was this picture taken?"

I'd say 1972-73, which is pre-Atari, isn't it?

Quote
"If you're trying to get someone into The Beach Boys, make sure they NEVER see this photo. I can picture VOLTRON in back of them. I really can. What year was this picture taken?"

1978.

Quote
"Mike Love needs to eat a meal. Brian looks out of it (I mean, REALLY, out of it). What year was this picture taken?"

1979.

Quote
"Al looks a little warmly dressed. What year was this picture taken?"

Looks like 1975. Definitely mid-70s.

Quote
"Brian Wilson looks like he was put there by use of Photoshop. Am I right or is it real? What year was this picture taken?"

1970-71 and much too early for Photoshop. I'm pretty sure it's real -- Brian's in all the versions of the photo I've seen. It does look like Photoshop (or the analog technique) was used to fade down the background a bit. Note the sharp edges around Brian and Dennis.

Quote
What year was this picture taken?

Mid-70s, probably 1975-76.

Quote
"The Beach Boys shooting a video called RIO with Duran Duran (not shown). What year was this picture taken?"

Circa 1976, onbaord Dennis' beloved yacht, The Harmony

Quote
Probably taken a little after Dennis' death.

Yes, early 1984.

Re: photo number 7...the one of them sitting around a rock wall that looks like it's a lodge or something, I'm pretty sure that was taken at Caribou Ranch in 1974.  If I remember right, this photo was in the 1975 concert program book.

Also, By the way Punkinhead, I have a vinyl copy of FRIENDS with the word FREE punched in wholes on the covers. Its a promo from that era I bought  from the collection of a retired local DJ.

Mike Love facts:

In 1970 Mike Love's skin became white, flabby and robe-like. Thus he is mostly naked on the pictures from this period.

Mike Love can grow a biblical beard overnight, without transition.

Mike Love's "mow-mow-mow"s can induce severe queasiness in sparrows and robins within a radius of 300 yards, so they may fall to the ground.

Mike Love is super-human, and some of these qualities rubbed over on his brother who suddenly in 1961 got bigger hands which made him catch the ball more easily.

Mike Love can immerse his pipe and cowboy hat in soapy water without it becoming wet.

Mike Love has invisible vibrators and dildos with him on stage.

Mike Love's intonation of "thrill" as "threh-hell" in "Blueberry Hill" makes grown men cry.

I don´t know, but Brian looked terrible "wrong" during the Landy-years. Some guys just shouldn´t be thin, imo.

Brian Wilson looks like he was put there by use of Photoshop. Am I right or is it real? What year was this picture taken?

That shot is taken in the back yard at Bellagio. It's the on-camera source of lighting that makes Brian and everyone look as if they are not part of the shot. It was late in the day and the flash was needed to highlight the group. Photoshop was years away from being invented. The steps the guys are sitting on lead up to the pool through a hedge-lined pathway.  There were several three-step landings on the trek to the pool area.  That day everyone was in the studio when a record company photographer showed up for some picture taking.  You can tell from the dress that no one took this photoshoot seriously. Brian is in his housecoat, Bruce doesn't have shoes on, Dennis is in his bathing suit, and Mike even forgot his hat! Taking a quick break from the studio, everyone dashed to the backyard for some shots.  The dogs were back there too.  You can see my dalmation, Mr Spock II, wandered into the photo as it was being taken. Judging from the dog's size and the project were were working on in the studio I'd place this photo close to 1973. ~swd

If you read my profile you would remember that I worked as a soundman on the original STAR TREK series at Paramount.  I was told that "Mr. Spock" was owned by leonard Nimoy when I first applied for my dog's name from the AKC, so he is "Mr. Spock II."  Besides having the run of Brian Wilson's back yard, he was the only dog allowed into A&M Studios (on Sunset), he was once kissed by Lynda Carter (Wonder Woman) and went swimming more than once in Elton John's pool. A fantastic dog he was!! He travelled the country from coast to coast. I took him flying many times where we did wing-overs so he could experience weightlessness.   ~swd

That's gotta be 1971.  Alan was still clean shaven in 1970.  He started growing his first beard in 1971, and the pic matches the look he was sporting around the time they were recording Surf's Up (according to pix in the Silver Anniversary book).  Also, Bruce had the Fu Manchu stache in 1971 as well, and Carl's hair was longest like that in 1971.

Stephen W. Desper, thanks for clearing that up. :D

I like it when I come across band photos (w/Brian) between 1967 an 1975.

A little on the printed, but never used, ORIGINAL ''SMILE'' ALBUM:

What's the deal with the printed (but never used) album jackets. The back has all the Beach Boys (minus Brian) in their normal pin-stripe button shirts (didn't they get past this look ie Pet Sounds). You mean to tell me, Brian didn't want his photo to appear on the album?

Photo was in the Tom Nolan 2-parter that featured in Rolling Stone #94, 10/28/71 &  #95 11/11/71, along with a shot of Brian wearing the exact same threads taken in The Radiant Radish. The interviews were conducted, in the main, during the late stages of recording Surf's Up (reference is made to Brian's 29th birthday) Excellent articles, and the source for much info.

“Around that time, there was another striking  example of the inaccuracy of the myth that Brian Wilson was a reclusive, non performing Beach Boys.
In the Winter of 1970, Brian went on a  short tour with the group, Brian recalled :
“When Mike Love was sick, I went with the group up to Seattle and Vancouver and the Northwest for some appearances. I was scared for a few minutes in the first show-It had been a while since I was infront of so many people. But after it started to cook I really got with it. It was the three best days of my life.”

While Brian’s 1970 tour is a little known fact, Mike Love illness is even less known. According to Tom Nolan’s 1971 Rolling Stone Article, Mike was hospitalised following a three-week fast that allowed Mike to eat only water, fruit juice (out of his ever-present and occasionally dangerous jug), and a little yogurt. As Nolan wrote, Everything got very amplified during the fast, he became quite sensitive to all positive and negative forces around him. He began tolook at things rather metaphorically. The birds in the sky seemed to have a purpose in flying southwesterly, and if he could try a little harder perhaps he could talk to the birds...”

Here's a scan of the upper half of the eyechart pic.  If you want the entire eyechart, let me know and I'll add it on.  Sorry it's not the best quality...my copy of 20/20 isn't prisitine (and has a nice cutout-bin hole to boot!).  Of course, I couldn't scan in the whole thing at once; I had to piece it together.  I can't get rid of that line caused by the fact that the cover could not lie entirely flat on the scanner glass...if I get a change later, I'll play with it a little more and see if i can improve it.

Love the Sunflower outtake pics.

Got the Rolling Stone article date wrong - was indeed 1971. My brain is rotting due to information overload.....(it is, I forgot both my house keys and coat last week!).

At least I remembered it WAS from Rolling Stone. As has also been pointed out, that's much more a 71 look with the facial hair.

Also agree about Mike looking like a complete freak in those days, as opposed to the rest of the band. Funny how things change....

[I don't know how to get these photos to size properly, so you’ll need to use the slider to move from one side of the photo to the other.  In order to provide a slider for each photo, I’ll post them separately so the slider is on the bottom of each photo. So this story is told in five sections.

Sometime in the 70’s we went on a tour to Australia and New Zealand.  The New Zealand part of the tour was about 10 days.  We stayed at one hotel for the entire trip and the Beach Boys gave a week’s worth of shows each night in the Hotel’s theater.  Here is how they looked at that time and a partial view of the theater.

One day, I recall, Bruce had made friends with a beautiful girl who just happened to be the daughter of one of the richest families in New Zealand.  The family had invited the guys and a few of us up to their estate. We were bussed up the side of a small mountain. It was a wonderful place.  We were served a delicious lunch outside on a large flat end of a hill.  The view from this hill was of both sides of the country, that is, two bodies of water, looking down on very green hills from hundreds of feet above where thousands of sheep grazing in herds of about fifty to one-hundred.  The house was behind us, a three-story granite totter structure. We ate several fruits and vegetables not known in the USA, but plentiful in New Zealand, plus exquisite lamb; about five courses.  It was there that Carl and I discovered how good New Zealand wine can be.

Back at the hotel it was full house after full house with time for autographs. In the following example Alan is doing the honors.

On the third to the last night a film crew showed up for sound check in the afternoon.  They were there to film the show for a special TV show (I wonder if that show is now in the vault?) There were three cameras.  One in the back, one hand held taking close-up shots and one on a track in the orchestra pit running the length of the stage. We ran through the show so the film director knew what the show was like and to provide sound levels for the film soundman.  Everything was set for the show that evening.

Then right before the show was to start, a younger Carl, who was in charge of the presentation order decided to move the song order around thinking it would give a better build to the show.  His intentions were good, but he did not know that the director had blocked out his camera moves based on the original order of songs.  It was a disaster – the film crew was frustrated.  Not knowing the songs and who sang lead on which part, when they thought Carl had a lead, it was Mike – so the camera position was all wrong. When Bruce sang the camera would be on Al, etc.  After the show the director was pissed as hell.  To compromise, they decided to come back the next night to get some shots that were missed and that seemed to smooth it over. Nevertheless, New Zealand was one of the highlight trips of my times touring with The Beach Boys.

Here’s the group ready to perform and Mike is pointing out his favorite Beach Boy.

I've got a beard.

I have nightmares about shaving it. I actually wake up feeling my face, hoping that it isn't true.

I've wanted to shave for weeks now, but the more I put it off, the more I know it's going to hurt.. guess I'm growing a beard.

I wish they had taken pictures of at least a few things from every session. Especially the Smiley/Friends era at Brian's place.

I have mental images of them all sitting at a table, eating lunch while discussing how a song should go and what not.

I picture them in the tent with a j in one hand and a budweiser in the other.

I've never really pictured them in a studio with a can of beer in hand......I can imagine what was doing the rounds during Smiley Smile though.....

Brian should never grow a beard. Dennis and Carl suited it perfectly. Mike - has he got one these days or not? He looks like a used car salesman either way (actually more to the point, a used-car-song salesman).  Al needs one to prove he can get served in bars.

Whaaaaaaaaat!?! Man, Brian had a killer beard. Look in the Smiley Smile/Wild Honey notes to see that great beard in the ocean. They all had awful beards on the cover of 15 Big Ones. Even Dennis "Mr. Sexy" looked terrible.

I must agree with MDH here. Carl looked superb with a beard. I'm saying this as a guy with complete confidence in his sexuality, too.

The beard didn't work too well for Dennis. Dennis looked more like a sage when he had his beard. But when he clean-shaven, damn I wish I was him.

No.  I grew one, got it out of my system, and hopefully will not have one again.

Anybody got some more photos from the Wild Honey-era? Those pictures in the "SS/WH"-twofer(at the beach and especially those where the are recording or playing instruments like carl with that Höfner-McCartney-Bass) rock !
