Title: Horrible Songs By Horrible (Or Not So Great) Artists
Post by: mikeyj on January 29, 2009, 04:08:06 AM
Okay there is already a thread for horrible songs by great artists, so I thought I'd start this one... I'm sure there are TONNES more that I can't think of right now but ones I was reminded of recently:

Turning Japanese by The Vapors - man I can't stand this song especially when everyone starts singing along to it!!
Technologic by Daft Punk - I don't know if anyone would class this as song, but this is so damn annoying!
Blue by Eiffel 65 - I heard this song so many times as it was popular here for a while and it annoys the heck out of me!
Beep Beep by Sonny Shroyer - just plain annoying

Anyway, like I said, there is probably a lot more that I can't remember right now but those are the ones that came to mind straight away.

Sex Pistols: 'Submission'

Really? I think that's a great song like all of Nevermind the Bollocks :)

If you wanna hear genuine crap head on to youtube.com and type 'Aqua barbie girl'. Beware! The crappiness of that song might make you develope a serious drug addiction just to kill the pain...

I actually thought Barbie Girl was quite funny.

Ah, don't get me started on NMTB. To this listener, it is a failed heavy metal effort.

That 'itchy bitchy heart' thing. Oh, wait,  it's 'Achy, Breaky Heart" by Billy Ray Cyrus.
And another one is 'My Toot Toot', sung by anyone in the mid Eighties.

The Black Eyed Peas - Let's Get Retarded (They had to change it to Let's Get it Started for it to be played on radio. Fergie's solo stuff is also horrendous. I can't believe how her stuff moves so many units, I figure it either brainwashes people or people buy her stuff for the pictures of her in the album art and throw out the cd.)

Terry Jacks - Seasons in the Sun

Dan Hill - Sometimes When We Touch

Sum 41 - How Could This Happen to Me

Daniel Powter - Had a Bad Day

Sarah Mclaughlin - Stupid

Madonna's whole discography, especially the last few. What really pissed me off was that recent one, Dancefloor stole away all the minimal amount of attention Kate Bush's comeback got in North America.

The Sex Pistols are alright as far as I'm concerened but I prefer the Ramones, they were alot more fun and didn't take themselves so seriously.

'Late Again' by Stealer's Wheel. It never fails to put me to sleep, somewhere in the middle of the song. Awful.

'A Lover's Concerto', by Ms. Miller. Nuff' said.

'Tiptoe Through The Tulips', by Tiny Tim.

'Bohemian Rhapsody', Queen. This is for me the anti-Good-Vibrations, the work of Satan. Sorry to prolly offend some here, but the truth prevails.

Anything by the Osmonds. Yech.

Now I can't get these songs out of my head.  ;D

Foot Loose - Kenny Loggins
I'll Tumble For Ya - Culture Club
She Don't Know Me - Bon Jovi
Can't Smile Without You - Barry Manilow
Feelings - Morris Albert
Macarena - Los Del Rio
I Am Woman - Helen Reddy
I Want You to Want Me - Cheap Trick

(Not saying the artists are terrible - just not a fan of these songs)

Who is Michael Bouble actually meant to appeal to anyway?, people who think Barry Manilow is a bit too hardcore and edgy?

Compared to the Ramones, perhaps. Sex Pistols appeal a bit more arty, IMO.

I agree. I was there at the time and remember interviews. Rotten really liked to vent a kind of nihilism in interviews that went beyond jokey cynicism or irony, or the type of opportunistic glee he shows nowadays. It's best understood when going from the Pistols to the first four P.i.L. albums (hey, notice that small 'i' in P.i.L.?). Compared to that, the Ramones were a surf/fun/punk band par excellence. At any rate, the ghoul/horror/fun/jest/B-movie thing was done way better by the Americans all the time, see The Cramps and so on.

Woah. You put Queen in the not-so-great artists category next to Tiny Tim and the Osmonds? I could see how Bohemian Rhapsody annoys some people (although I think it's a great, creative piece of music with a nice slice of humor thrown in), but Queen's catalog has plenty of gems next to the crappy/questionable stuff.  Paging Luther...

The Everly Brothers - Cathy's Clown (just no)

This is a tragedy.

Whitney Houston: 'I Will Always Love You'

What I dislike about this is the fact that the general public seem to be unaware that this is actually a Dolly Parton song, not only that but the original message of the song was killed in the context of that god-awful film.

The 1st that came to mind:

Culture Club - Karma Chameleon (I like the voice of the lead singer, it's stylish in its own way, however, that's not enough for liking the band)
Engelbert Humperdinck - Red Roses for My Lady (can't believe that his boring "Release Me" won over Beatles song)
Modern Folk Quartet - This Could Be the Night (though Brian's v-n was fairly fine)
Radio Stars - Dirty Pictures
Chris Bell - I am the Cosmos
Lada Edmund-Jr. - The Larue (I know that she's not a singer at the 1st place, but I very disliked that ditty immediately)
The Cardigans - Lovefool
Chris De Burgh - The Lady in Red
Starland Vocal Band - Afternoon Delight (incredibly boring)
Bonnie Tyler - A Rockin' Good Way
The Everly Brothers - Cathy's Clown (just no)
Los Lobos - La Bamba
Fool's Garden - Lemon Tree
Ace of Base - It's a Beautiful Life

I would also add any songs by Britney Spears, James Blunt (I very much hate his voice!), Black Eyed Peas, Christina Aguilera & already mentioned Aqua which were/are frequently played on the radio. And many other 80s/2000s songs by various 1-star artists.

Re Macarena: I first heard it when we danced to it in the kindergarten, at around 5-6 years old. It was a real fun & we were very stylishly dressed. So the song brings at least nice memories. Even if now I don't consider it as any good than then. The girl's & guy's repetitive vocs are horrendous.

I love the Cardigans :(

Lou Bega, Mambo No.5. was played way too many times in the late 90s-early 2000s. I fain forgot it. Then I hear it today on the radio - 'thanks', whoever you are.

Horrible Songs by Horrible (Or Not So Great) Artists??

Put on top 40 radio today , and this list fills up quickly.

Here's a few recent earworms

MacLemore - Downtown - Wasn't rapping about a thrift shop enough?

Ariana Grande - She just put out an awful song where she oversings which sounds just like the horrible song where she oversings that came out last summer.

5th Harmony - Worth It - For anyone who thought that The Spice Girls were annoying.

Good catch. It ruins a what could be decent song & performance. hint: Christina Aguilera. Mariah & Whitney are nothing in compare.

Add Kelly Clarkson to that list.  Last month I kept hearing a version of her singing Run Run Rudolph that was absolutely dreadful.

"Agadoo", Sagarossa (Saragossa?) Band (idiocy)
"Abracadabra", Steve Miller (tedious)
"Everything I Do", Bryan Adams (forget Bruce Johnston)
Anything by Modern Talking (it's funnily super popular band with people here)
"Paradise", Phoebe Cates (cheesy)
"Venus", Shocking Blue (chaps in Beatles.ru get real crazy about this song/ the main singer)
"YMCA", Village People (dumb)

Sitting at my computer laughing at this. :lol  Really, I just lack the music jargon to be able to describe exactly what quality it is I don't like about her voice, so wobbly caramel it is.

:lol No worries. I used to dig her voice, but right around 2001 she lost the quirkiness about her voice that I love. Actually I had quite a bit of vibrato to my voice before my first stroke 7 years ago, had to relearn how to sing again and for some reason now at the age of 40 I sound better than I have since, oh, I dunno, maybe 20?

Absolutely. Particularly with the U.S. National Anthem. Just sing the dang thing!

I had a musician friend who, finding out that he and his wife were going to have a daughter, said that he was thinking of naming her "Melisma." Thankfully they reconsidered : -)

Centuries by Fall Out Boy

I don't usually pay attention to top 40 pop, it's mostly crap but usually only mildly annoying. I do get miffed when a sample of a classic song is used as the hook or the chorus in a new song that is clearly inferior. Add a sparkle to a turd and it's still a turd. Hearing those two abominations just makes me want to blast the original songs they sampled.
