Title: Pro Shot Beach Boys Concerts
Post by: Rocker on October 25, 2008, 03:52:45 AM
After seeing this clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wndzbZP31dQ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wndzbZP31dQ), which was new to me, I asked myself if there is a list out there with all the BBs concerts that were professionally filmed. There must be quite a lot. If there isn't such a list, maybe we can use this thread to collect them. It would also be interesting to see if a DVD-release (or a release via beachboyscentral.com) would be possible.

EDIT:

2012 - 7 - 31
This is the list that I will update everytime we'll get something new.
I'll also include appearances on TV shows if they have a certain concert-character to them.

Great idea.

BTW This clip isn't from 1994 I guess, 'cause Jeff is still there. Maybe 1989?

I think it's from the 1989 TV series. That's also one of the best live versions of "Sloop John B" I've ever seen/heard...

The 1989 series (Endless Summer) parts where from an indoor show this clip is from a stadium. Looks a little bit like in the Still Cruisin' video but Mike's outfit is different.

Yeah, you're right. It is from the "Endless summer"-TV-shows. I just watched it again. Totally forgot about it.

So, what do we have? Is the "Lost concert" the first BBs-concert filmed or are there others from before that? And what do we have of early 60s-concerts? What about the '66 London-shows? Were they filmed completely?

The clip is very good - Al and Bruce are in great voice - until Captain Nasal comes in, assuming the rightful mantle of Mickey Mouse with a bad cold.

The less said about the parasols during California Girls the better. An embarrassment to the fans of the BBs who have to justify this kind of crud to the non-believers.

The answer would depend on what your criteria is. Yes there are things that were "professionally" filmed like snippets of the '66 London shows...but they don't have sound. There is a lot of that type of footage around, visually great, but soundless...and not complete, just random clips. The first moving footage with sound is '62 Surfin Safari from the doc. One Man's Challenge...this is a "staged" concert scene with seemingly live, but pre-recorded sound. There is moving footage from the '63 Hawaii tour, home camera footage, again no sound. '64's Lost Concert would be the first footage of a complete set with sound. Unknown things do pop up on occasion, some '68 footage with sound showed up last year. There's footage with sound from '71 and '72 (NY Central Park and London respectively). But its a very incomplete picture of the BB's until '76...there seems to be a lot of concert footage with sound from that point on.

I suppose there are enough filmed concerts out there that you could put some nice packages together. I do see a couple of problems with a project like that, however.

First, I don't think there's a lot of demand for old Beach Boys' concerts; it would have to be marketed to diehards like us. The Beach Boys are an institution though, and there would be some historical significance. But commercially....does anybody know how the Knebworth DVD sold? Or other BB/BW related DVD's?

Second, we all know there are, should I say, rough spots in the later Beach Boys' shows. For obvious reasons, it would be almost impossible to do the post production work necessary to make some of the songs presentable, unless they were simply omitted. And then something somehow is lost....

Third, I hope the footage is still around in its original form. A lot of time has gone by - yes, we're getting older - and I wonder if the stuff is still around or was thrown out, much like the discarded audio masters.

I would be happy to see any kind of Beach Boys' filmed concerts available, but I think it would entertaining to see a professionally produced DVD or two, done as a compilation, taking the best available songs/performances and put in some kind of chronological order, almost like a career overview.

No, strictly live performances, no interviews. Start with the 1962 "Surfin' Safari" clip, go right through some of the 1963-64-65 TV appearances, into some of the rarer late 60's/early 70's stuff, right through to 1998. I think it would be an enjoyable watch.

There's that Blondie'n'Ricky era footage in Endless Harmony, open air, where Mike's wearing a purple shirt with a sun. 'Sail on Sailor' is overdubbed, but I don't remember if it's the studio version or a live one. Is that one of those minimal/soundless footage cases?

About a project like this.... Even in our days, when folks don't really feel like paying for music, I think a well-assembled Led Zeppelin (2003) style DVD would sell. Folks bought that one cause there was a feeling that all the goodies were thrown in and it was worth the price. There is stuff, but the costs to license all of those... Ok, forget it.

Ditto for a "Anthology" CD set with all the tracks that aren't included in the twofers, from Lonely Days to Carry me Home. Ok, forget it part II.

I think it's from the 1989 TV series. That's also one of the best live versions of "Sloop John B" I've ever seen/heard...

The answer would depend on what your criteria is. Yes there are things that were "professionally" filmed like snippets of the '66 London shows...but they don't have sound. Well, I was of course talking about complete shows with sound. Something that you could release. So, the '66-shows fall out as it seems. Thanks for letting me know that the "Lost concert" is the first complete concert filmed. I gues there's nothing else from their early carrere? I wouldn't count the TAMI-show, because they just did some songs as pasrt of a big concert, although you could probably include it in a list.
I mean just the 4th July concerts would be cool. Imagine how great a complete '68 concert or even better, a '72 one would be. How many things were filmed just for TV or something? The Largo concert in '77 or the (terrible) Australia-shows probably weren't the only ones. I think in the early 90s there was some stuff from Japan...
BTW on "American band" you have Dennis singing "You are so beautiful" (or cracking it out) and then you see "Barbara Ann" from july 4th in Atlantic City. Is YASB from that same show? Dennis hair lokks kinda different.

There was a professionally filmed concert from 1993 that aired on Japanese TV as a 30th Anniversary Special.  It is interspersed with interviews with Mike, Carl, Al and Bruce, everything is in English with Japanese subtitles.

From the 1978 Australia & New Zealand tour one of the Melbourne shows was filmed (in part) and aired on Australian TV - this is the show in wide circulation on the trading circuit. Rumours exist of a show from Brisbane being in existance - I haven't seen it so I can't comment. One of the New Zealand shows was filmed and aired on TVNZ - either the Feb 26 Auckland show of the Feb 28 Christchurch show. The NZ show is reportedly still in storage in the TVNZ film library - untouched and unloved.

Contrary to rumours which circulate from time to time footage of the Perth concert debacle does on exist.

Was the Christchurch show. Unlikely to be in stereo as could be many of the TV recordings from concerts filmed for TV.

According to Badman, Dennis had several bits of 1970's shows filmed on 16mm for his personal collection. I assume that most of it is probably silent. There is a Marylin 1977 concert that circulates, and the previous night also exists on film. There is also at least one complete pro shot film of a live version of Roller Skating Child. Watching Brian dancing to it is a trip.  :lol

Great infos guys.
So let's start a list which we can fill by and by. I think we should also mention the exact dates.Unfortunately I don't have the discs here, so I dont know te dates right now. This is a start in chronological order (off the top of my head):

1964 The Lost Concert
(1964 TAMI-Show)
1977 Largo
1978 Melbourne, Australia
1980 June 21st Knebworth, England
1980 July 4th Washington, DC
1993 Japan

take it on....

Unknown date 1994 - Berlin Germany

7/4/1995 - Philly PA

Unknown date 1998 - Kentucky Horse Park (Private Party for Toyota)

7/4/2007 or 7/5/2007 Branson MO  - Eric's setlist archive doesnt match what the video shows, and he has the identical setlist for both dates, so this is one or the other

I'm sure there are others

1983 Seattle
1983 Atlantic City July 4th
1983 Costa Mesa
1984 Washington DC July 4th
1985 Phily & Wash DC July 4th
Should we add here the Farm Aid 1985/86 gig and Live Aid?
1986 Waikiki
1989 Endless Summer concert
1989 Beach Club
1991 Japan (not 1993, they even performed Crocodile Rock)
1994 Some US gig which was recorded for A&E
1996 Nashville

Then there are several television reports about the Beach Boys with concert footage from 1977, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982 and 1993 but the question is how much did they record.   ???  Also I don't know anymore the venue, lost the DVDs so I can't look after. Then there's the one show from 1996 where they recorded the Long Tall Texan clip.

The group were also filmed playing in Houston in Feb 1978 and this footage was used in American Band. The scene where Brian sings "In My Room" onstage comes from this show-though the film pretends that the footage is from 1976 and uses it to show Brian's comeback

You are also missing the Dec 8 1970 app at the Gaumont in Paris- probably the best concert TV app by the BBs ever-in my opinion.  Six songs from the concert were seen in the TV show-and it is, or was on Youtube.  The songs that Keith Badman lists, however, are not altogether correct.  They did not play Vegetables and he omitted-Country Air, Riot in Cell Block and  It's About Time

I don't think that any Carl-shows were filmed, but fortunately there were some radio-broadcasts, which means that recordings are there in a good quality.
If they use cameras for a big screen I don't think it means that the shows are also recorded, does it?

Anyone remembers when the AVO-session by Mike & Bruce in swiss was? And what about Brian's Smile and Pet Sounds-concerts? How many were filmed and which ones? Couldn't find an answer in the booklets.

When you say "off the monitors" it sounds like someone in the audience might've done that. So that wouldn't be on the list, but if the local news filmed it, it of course would fit. Can we get more info on that?

It's not home made. It's pro shot, but it looks like the news may have filmed it to use in the broadcast or they had a the visual equivalent of a soundboard. It's got a few moments here or there that are really good but it films from a far shot sometimes.

Well, yeah. But we don't know what's waiting to be released. See that '69 Olympia concert for example

If you're talking about the Beach Boys on film then I want 'The Girls on the Beach' (1965) movie in my collection. Nice appearance by the BB's including Dennis.

Yeah, I know it's not a concert but it's pretty good anyway.

I have a hard time believing only two concerts pre-1965 were filmed. Is this correct, or is there other footage out there that's unreleased.

I'm unsure if the Branson show(s) should really be included here.  From the looks of it, the footage looks to be just a feed from the cameras projecting to the venue screens.  Not nessarily a show that Beach Boys organization were purposely filming for their own purposes.  It's more of a leaked recording from the venue.  It could be included in your list but perhaps noted as such.

Thanks Justin !
I guess a lot of the recent shows were filmed. We'll see if we will get them all together.
And good to know about the Branson shows. I haven't seen them. Somebody in this thread gave the information. So, what about the sound ? It's probably not a real multitrack recording, is it ?
I'll update the list.

BTW, on this site (http://www.beachboys.com/filmsI.html) the author talks about the DVD "The Beach Boys: Back To The Beach Unicorn Performance Series 96116 [DVD]; 30 min. Released October 25, 2005" and mentiones footage from St. Louis and dates it to around 1993. I found on this site (http://fairsaintlouis.org/about-us/history/) that the Beach Boys played in St. Louis in 1994 so I guess it's that footage. But did anybody see it ? Is it professional footage and sound or just recorded from the audience ?

EDIT:
Found something on youtube. It is from '94, see list for the youtube-link

I think it's from the 1989 TV series. That's also one of the best live versions of "Sloop John B" I've ever seen/heard...

You should know, Sheriff!

I used to have this DVD, it was officially released. I bought it at FYE very early in my fandom and it is the only Beach Boys related product I ever sold back. It was professionally filmed and everything, it was just atrocious. It was basically all Stamos, all the time with cheerleaders and nasal singing. The cover was really misleading because it was a picture of the band from 1964, with basically no information on the back side about what the concert was, so when I put it in my DVD player I was pretty surprised.

Cany anybody help me with the dating of these clips from Endless Summer ?
AGD's site says that these two shows were filmed in May for the series:

27 - Pacific Amphitheater, Costa Mesa CA*  [w/Chicago]

30 - Universal Studios, Los Angeles CA*

So, I guess the campfire sessions were done at Universal Studios, right? What about the clip of "God only knows" on this link after "All I have to do is dream"?

I suppose it comes from the 27th. If that's true where does this "Wouldn't it be nice?" and "Darlin'" come from? Universal Studios as well ?

Wow, I completely forgot about that 1970 Paris concert! I first watched it back in 2011 when I wasn't yet registered. I like the way how the Boys dressed, i.e. not similarly. Specially I like Al's hat or what it is and Carl's jacket. That headgear very suits to Al. Performances are also cool to see, judging by this video I'll go even further saying the BBs stood at the same position as The RS, LZ and the kind being one of the best live bands of the 70s [and maybe the 60s too]. The interview bits are amusing, it's often good to see the artists talking in an informal way, joking, playing fools, discussing sth. etc.

But I never saw Ringo onstage with them! What an eye-candy that 1984 video is! My favorite Beatle with my favorite band - how could I miss that mixture?! Thanks for this treasure watching time, Rocker! Generally, that's a great idea to gather all those HQ footages, videos and so on of The BBs in one place.

Also, special thanks for the Beatles at UNICEF! Good find!

My pleasure.
I hope we'll get a fairly complete list together. There must've been more then just what we have now. Hope that someday there will be stuff released.
If you look at the Central Park clip from '77 you have to remember that two days after the band broke up. The Rolling Stone article that describes that was just posted in the "Dennis and the ultimatum"-thread (I believe). I listened to an audience recording of that show and it seemed not that bad. Would love to see complete footage. But in that special case - as i mentioned on the list - I'm not sure if it was just a clip of "California saga" that was recorded for a local TV-station or if there was more.
That said, I believe I'll also add this year's "Good morning America"-show

Do you have more info about the Branson shows from July 4th/5th 2007 ? Or were none of these filmed and the footage comes from the show you named?

According to this http://www.igtc.com/archives/thewho/1994/Jul/msg00019.html it was broadcasted July 14, 1994. So it must be before that date and Gerry Beckeley of America is present. AGD lists some 1994 shows with America.
I think July 25-29 is the date of the Branson concert because in early July they played Feel Flows, and that song is not on the filmed show.

Allright, I did some research and came across this site: http://www.rockandrollondvd.com/rich_text_127.html

It says the BBs' set was recorded in Sea World, which after comparing to AGD's site only brings May 28th 1994 in San Antonio into the nearer possibilities (if there aren't any shows missing on Bellagio). No word about Beckley though.

EDIT:

Ok, I added some dates that I got from the above link. Additions were done for 1980, 1991, 1996 and 1999.

I don't know what "pro fan shot" means but it sounds like it doesn't belong on the list.

There were a few 1983 shows that were professionally filmed, besides the Seattle show. The American Band movie makes it seems like Dennis sang You Are So Beautiful at the Atlantic City show from July 4th, but it's skillfully(?) edited from another show, of which I can not remember the venue at the moment. There was also another 1983 show filmed, at least partially. I think it's from San Diego. A few clips of it are in a 1993 news broadcast talking about the Good Vibrations box set. Brian can be seen singing Sloop John B, with a woman sitting beside him on the piano bench. Does anybody know who she is, by the way?

Now, if we could get more info on that, it would be great. Are you talking about this clip? I don't see no vintage footage in there

Nope. In the one I'm talking about there is a Brian interview where he talks about God Only Knows being written in 20 minutes. There is also a quick shot of Dennis sitting in a red convertable, apparently before the 1983 concert I mentioned.

It's probably not online, is it?
And I guess it's too short to make a guess where it was, right?

I've always been really curious about the 5/6/98 concert with Matt and Dave but no Al. Maybe it's just morbid curiosity, but is it circulating anywhere? Is it any good?

I believe it is most certainly circulating.  It's not much different than any other Beach Boys concert from the time period.  It was odd to have both Matt and Adrian performing onstage together.

There was at least one more 1981 show that was filmed, but I seem to remember reading on here that it was an amatuer video made by somebody involved with the tour, just as a souvenier. Maybe it was filmed by somebody's wife. There is a brief clip of it shown in Endless Harmony. You see Brian in I believe a blue shirt, walking across the stage. Actually, it looks like he's walking towards the camera.

Thanks. You can see cameras here as well:

But to put it on the list I think we should have clarification. Well, maybe I'll put it there and put a "?" behind it

I don't have the DVD here so I can't look at it. But if it is amateur footage - even if it's the whole show - we sholdn't put it on the list.

Do you have something like a screenshot of the short snippet of the '83 concert ?

Ok, Badman writes that the June 18th 1969 show in Bretislava was filmed and the one on June 24th in Belgium (including a live Our Prayer !). AGD's site doesn't list a show for the 24th but one in Belgium for the 21st. Since I tend to believe AGD and Ian more than Badman, is that the one and was it really filmed ?

Another question: was the '83 appearance at the White House filmed? The introduction by Ronald Reagan was, so how about the performance?

Title: Re: Pro Shot Beach Boys Concerts
Post by: Ian on September 05, 2012, 05:03:48 PM
As far as the Belgium show-the BBs were in Belgium on June 3 1969 and they did tape a TV show-so I assume they filmed a concert.  I've looked in Belgian papers but found very little on it unfortunately (save for a short article about a very rude reporter interviewing them at the TV studios-so able to confirm they were in the country in early June-but not much else).  But they were there June 3 not June 24.  Indeed the whole tour was over by that date (though some BBs were still in Europe).  As far as the 83 White House show goes-it is possible it was filmed but it isn't available if it was.

Thanks Ian ! I've updated the list including a link to Reagan's intro speech at the White House show but mentioned that it's not sure if the show was filmed.
It's frustrating that Badman's book is so full of errors.

Al sings California Girls.

It's probably the show from June 16th 1983 as the reporter mentions Erie.
Now the question: Do you think this was completely filmed? Or at least some complete songs? The sound seems more like it was just for the TV station
Dennis looks like a mess... :(

Ok, I updated the list a bit. I added the Jimmy Fallon show (although this was no concert just like the Good Morning America appearance I think these kind of performances are ok for the list), the 2012 show in Woodlands, TX (parts of it are in the Beach Boys 60 Minutes video) and a video link for the St. Augustine show taken from the new trailer for the Greatest Hits. Unfortunately I couldn't find the footage on youtube from the PBS special or the Charlie Rose interview in good quality.

I know that probably most of the 2012 shows were filmed but before I put them on the list I'd like to have it verfied so if any of you can say with 100% certainty that a certain show was filmed please do so

The list should only include professional footage which would count out the London '66 and Hawaii '67 stuff as those are home movies (if I'm not mistaken). If the Brighton '69 footage is professional I'd love if you could give me the dates. And of course if you have more candidates just post them here and I'll add them.

London '66 is definitely pro-shot, just no sound on most of it... on the other hand Hawaii '67 is a notch or two down from pro for sure.

I also need some clarification if the dates and links for the Endless Summer Tv Special are correct.

You'll see that I also changed the layout in a very basic way. I thought it looks nicer now. But if you have another early concert shot in color that has something iconic about it let me know and I might add that one. I couldn't find a better picture of the early BBs than the one I used.

Yes, I thought that you probably had input with that but wasn't sure and hoped that you would reply to my posting. Guess it was obvious enough  :-D
I wondered though if a TV station was named (ARD, ZDF?) or something else that would give a hint where one could ask. At that time german TV had only two or three stations I believe and maybe there's still something in the vaults. On the other hand, maybe it was not for a TV station but for another project.

metal flake paint just gave me some infos regarding the '77 Central Park show. At least snippets for six different songs were filmed by different TV stations. Not sure about whole songs but I guess it is possible.

I'll have to go look through my archives (12 binders full!!!) but I don't think it stated that.

If there really were only 2 or 3 stations at the time ( and those still exist) it would seem a fairly easy task to find whether they have anything

Well, it depends on if they were shooting for a TV station or something different. A "camera crew" doesn't have to work for a TV station. But since german TV had some interesting programs for music in the 60s (Beat Club for example) I'd hope for something that maybe might get found.

You're probably just the one to find it!  You're in the right location, are you not?  That's a big step. Just talk your way into all the vaults/ find the folks that were in charge at the time....

Well, I'm in Germany but that's all  :-D
First we have to know who filmed it and get some more infos. In case one of the TV stations was responsible for it I wouldn't really know what to do but I could try.

EDIT:

But first, could you give me more infos for these two performances? I believe the first one is from "Fridays" and they alyo palyed a medley of GV and "Gon' on". Did they do any more songs?

And what about that concert of which you can see parts in the "Goin' Platinum"-special? Obviously during "School days" the studio version was played. But did they also play live and what?

I don't think knowing who filmed it is part and parcel; what we( you) need to know is what stations were around then, and if they're still around. Then, if they're close enough to you, you just go and find who to talk to/ who handles their archives and see if  they have anything. maybe you'll find they have something else you'd like. or nothing at all....

Ok-so I looked in my archives:  The German film crew is not named specifically-but the article in the Yonkers paper from February 1965 explains that members of the Yonkers Rock and Roll Auto Club were contacted by a German film crew who said they were making a movie and wanted to film them (Having heard about them from someone).  Members of the club went to see the BBs perform in NY and the film crew got footage of the boys meeting the BBs.  The Hit Parader article-confirms that backstage scenes were filmed-and indeed in one photo you can see Brian looking at the Surfer Girl album-with what may be a camera filming him.  But that's it-obviously American media had little interest in the specifics.  Looks like it may have been for a documentary film rather (perhaps on American youth culture?) though perhaps for TV.
By the way-the BBs filmed a TV app for the "German Second Program" network while in Munich on Nov 13 1964-according to Billboard.  I have always wondered if that footage survives..They probably played "When I Grow Up" and "Dance, Dance, Dance" but you never know.  They taped a show in Italy two days earlier for RAI TV-and they played "The Lonely Sea" of all tunes!! The reason-it was a hit record there.  Would be interesting to see these-but I never was able to get an answer about this.

Now, that sounds like it could be done (if it still exists). I might try to contact the ZDF and ask about their archives and if there's a listing.

It would be very interesting if somebody could be able to get some info on the Seattle 1980 pro shot film that's listed on a tape trading website. My gut instinct is that it's mislabled, but it could be worth the effort.

Almost certainly May 1983, not 1980.

If your talking about the video of them-in which they all come out in cars and take the stage with a clean-shaven (extremely bloated) Dennis and a relatively trim, bearded Brian (who does a dual lead on Runaway with Al and dances awkwardly) than that is May 1983.  I believe a very brief clip is in Endless Harmony (Carl introducing "My brother Dennis Wilson"-who waves shirtless.  Also has Mike doing "Imagine" as a tribute to Lennon.  There is, however, footage from Seattle 1977 that appeared in the unreleased Our Team film. I assume that the show was filmed and it is possible a complete 77 concert is in the Brother vaults.

It does now  :)

The Seattle '83 show is on the list and features even a link to the whole show.
So, do you say the 1980 date for another filmed Seattle show is probably wrong? As mentioned before, I got it from a "trading site" and therefor it's very possible someone didn't know the right date. But if you say the '77 Seattle show was filmed (or in parts) I'd just change the date on the list

BTW I wrote to the ZDF and asked if there are chances of such Beach Boys material from '64 may be in their archives. Will let you know what their answer will be.

EDIT:
Oh and Ian, metal flake point gave me a date he has for the Goin' Platinum show but he also wasn't sure about it. Do you know when and where the live performances were recorded?

Cool. I added it. Also changed the Seattle date to '77.

There are still some dates open at the moment that I hope you (or whoever) can answer if you got the time.

- what about the show for the Goin' Platinum special? Is the date on AGD's and Ian's list for the broadcast of the recording?
- Brian's show at Capitol in May 2008 (on which day)?
- and this Beachago stuff that was just re-uploaded: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xy7UZ5nYdmU
It must be from between June 24th and 28th 1975 because the reporter mentiones the Capitol Center

Hope I didn't overlook anything.

No. I can't remember but I think it was listed somewhere. I will change that.
I'm very thankful for your corrections. I like the idea of that list and want it to be as accurate as possible. That way I can contribute something worthwhile to the board. So if you got more corrections, etc. just keep them comig.

BTW I got an answer from the ZDF. They said that they'd need more information like a show title for example (regarding the dec. '64 appearance).

Since you list TV appearances before live audiences-I think you have to add The Steve Allen Show-taped in San Diego, CA on March 12, 1964 before a live audience (a portion was used in Endless Harmony-but the full show survives). They played "Fun, Fun, Fun" and "Surfin' USA."

In regards to your earlier questions.  I have a Goin Platinum DVD that has that date on it-so that just means the special was completed by that date-don't know when every segment of it was taped.  As far as the 75 footage-it comes from those gigs but can't be more precise.

Oh yeah, I believe Fun Fun Fun from that show is on youtube; it was at least at some point. I think this show could be added but not the Ed Sullivan shows. There's something different about those although they also play in front of an audience on Sullivan. I don't know how to explain that. Maybe it's because there's not a real stage in the way of Ready, Steady, Go or because you can't see the audience IDK. I guess at one point or another I'll have to change the specifications of the list...

I wish the Beach Boys would do more archival DVD releases like The Who and the Stones have been doing a lot in recent years.  A lot of clips that were in Endless Harmony and American Band that I would want to see in their entirety (and in the quality they appeared in those respective films).  I'm sure I'm not alone in that.

Stanley T regularly plays at this little blues bar in Long Beach CA called Boomers.

Clip says late 80s. Erics site mentions Brian at one gig plus probably another early 89 where R&R music was on the set list. Maybe from those.

Philadelphia, PA January 24, 1989

Costa Mesa, CA May 27, 1989

..after another listen you may note the horn section. Both gigs were with Chicago and R&R music was an encore with the band in Costa Mesa according to the site. That may be it.

Man, that 2000 Jamboree in the Hills video is so strange. Something about it it just makes it seem way more "fake" than Mike and Bruce shows these days.... even with the presence of longtime sidemen like Kowalski and Meros. Of course, Kowalski and Baker being replaced was a really positive change (I first saw "the touring band" shortly before Baker's we-all-hope final exit and the next time with Mr. Kirsch was a marked improved vocally) as I think few here would disagree. Anyway, strange video, glad it's posted.

Although the TNN series was called Front Row Center, the actual episode was titled "In My Room." It originally aired November 10th, 1998 (a Tuesday). Apparently, the "series" only made it to all of two episodes on TNN.

Edit: Also...Andrew's site has the actual taping date as Sept. 16, 1998.

Thanks! I'll see if I add the airing date.

Here's some info:

Matt Jardine's hair looks like Whoopi Goldberg's.
Al and Carl generally look like they'd rather be anywhere else than there.
Mike's missing entrances all over the place worried about his stage act.
The arrangements sound a little tired.

I can't remember Carl looking genuinely excited after 1979. I think he hated what they became after that yet had nothing else to do following his botched attempt at a solo career. Poor Carl...

Also, having all these songs next to each other is a terrible choice as it becomes boring and repetitive. Top the casual fan they all sound the same anyway and I have problems distinguishing them myself.

That would be the 'Bad Hair, Bored, Poser and Tired Tour' that ran during the early 90s.

I purposely have avoided watching clips from the Mike Love / Cheerleaders / Dancers / Sherry Holt clothing era but I accidentally watched the one of the car medley posted a bit back in the thread - AUGH.

Seeing that stuff again makes me hope and pray that someone will unearth some full length 60's or 70's gems that have yet to be released.

I've been a fan for nearly 40 years and Mike has nearly drove me away for good many times.

Mike and Bruce played a show in Macau a year ago today, and I didn't see any cameras. The next day they played at the Hong Kong Rugby 7s (a 7 song set) that was filmed for TV, but nothing else.

Was it scheduled during the Beach Boys tour (2012) and maybe thought that they would appear? I don't know about the size of the event but I wonder if Mike&Bruce - even with the Beach Boys' name - get such big offers in countries other than the USA

Title: Re: Pro Shot Beach Boys Concerts
Post by: Woodstock on April 02, 2014, 05:34:45 AM
If you do want some detail - The Rugby 7's are a yearly thing, and last year they decided they would have some music. Cathay Pacific (airlines) flew them over first class on a jumbo jet, basically sponsoring them. The arena itself holds 40,000 people max, and there had to have been something close to that many the day of. Still, it was a 7 song set as half time entertainment, not selling out a stadium full of fans. The real show they held the day before in Macau had maybe 400 people max. I bumped into the band on the way and got to meet M&B and Tim Bonhomme, who was especially nice. He left backstage passes to the 7's for me and my friends, so we got to walk around on the actual pitch, which meant standing right in front of the stage when they set up.

This year they got a Queen cover band...a major step down.

Carl never looked excited after his solo stint. It seems like he basically just gave life up after that. Playing the medleys etc for the pocket change so he could continue living in affluence. It really became a desk job for him. Perhaps he bored himself to death?

More likely Carl was preoccupied with what was going on with Brian and the efforts to spring him from Landy's clutches.

But admittedly, having those cheerleaders onstage was plenty boring to this woman -- I wanted to see the band, not dancers!

That guy is Stanley T. Sichell. He was in the band from September 1990 to March 1991 aprox.
This footage is special to me because it was my first ever Beach Boys show and probably my first ever show by anybody.
You can notice the crowd in front of the stage which was mainly formed by 14-15 year old teenagers. Besides being a free show, that was due to an album of greatest hits called "The Beach Boys Collection", which was released in Spain that summer of 1990 and quickly picked the top of the charts where it stayed until late September.
To date, this is the more commercially succesful The Beach Boys have never been in Spain.

Yes, I returned to the same venue the day after The Beach Boys concert to see the Killer, but I didn't have many memories of him until I watched this recent footage.
In 1990, Jerry Lee was in Spain in May and October too. That TV show maybe is from the May visit.

The reunion was for an agreed 2 songs then extended by another.  This set was always envisioned as a limited run. At the conclusion Brian decided ' It was a great experience, it had a term to it, and now everyone's going on with their ways of doing things.'

Mike was heard to respond with 'It kinda feels like getting fired'

Since Al is wearing a Giants-shirt (ironic, isn't it?  :-D ) and Octopus Prime mentioned that Foskett's presence makes it December '81 the earliest, I looked through AGD's site and if I haven't overlooked anything I guess it's September 18th, 1982, Candlestick Park, San Francisco CA. Am I right?
EDIT: It would be our first 1982 entry on the list btw

The pictures from different years but going by the dating on the site Carl, Al and Dennis all wore the same clothes in '82 and '83.
There's one that is dated '83 with Mike wearing some white shirt and pants (see below) and Dennis doesn't look wasted enough in the footage for it being from 1983 I'd say. So I guess '82 is correct. Thanks for the link, I had forgotten about it!

Definitely '82, based on the inclusion of "It's OK", the presence of Adrian Baker, and the fact that Kowalski is playing auxiliary percussion rather than doubling Dennis on a second drum set. These clips also determine for us that Brian was absent from this September '82 Candlestick Park gig.

I could update the link for the May 20th 1988 show. That's when they played "This whole world" and "Forever" a.o. The new link features the whole concert (more or less). What do you think? Is it professional shot or amateur footage of the in house screen?

Thanks to metal flake paint I added a link to a report on the show on July 6th 1993 which also features some interview snippets. As AGD's site mentions, this show was recorded as well as a couple of others from this tour.

The band did a live set on the Easter Seals Telethon in 1979. According to Getty Images pictures of the event, it took place in Los Angeles. Getty Images dates the pics to March 25, while AGD's Bellagio site shows May 25 as the date.  There's only apparently a very short clip on YouTube:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ob7ILaSvW4w

But I have the entire show buried away on VHS somewhere. This is the show where *Mike* sang the lead vocal on "Good Timin' for some inexplicable reason. I think they did at least three songs. "Good Timin'", "Surfin' USA", and I believe "Good Vibrations."

I also remember a picture of this event with Carl and Joe Esposito (of Presley's Memphis Mafia) chatting backstage.
Have added it now!

Title: Re: Pro Shot Beach Boys Concerts
Post by: HeyJude on March 01, 2016, 01:59:28 PM
I think the Esposito photo is on Getty Images as well.

I'm still wondering if there was a particular reason why they had Mike sing "Good Timin" even though Carl was standing there right next to him.

All of the obvious possibilities don't seem likely. Was Carl's voice in bad shape that day? I don't think so; he sings "Good Vibrations" just fine. Were they trying to divvy out equal lead vocals? Doesn't make sense; Mike sang "Surfin' USA" and part of "Good Vibrations."

Perhaps it's a simple as "trying something different", but having Mike do a pretty weak job on their new single on a TV appearance doesn't seem like the best scenario to try something weird out.

Did Carl just arbitrarily refuse to sing it or something? If so, why not have Bruce or Brian or Al sing it?

It occurs to me that if you are using TV concerts before a live studio audience that you are missing the two Ed Sullivan appearances and the concert done in Amsterdam for Twien on December 14 1968. Clips of this show in American band documentary don't show the audience but you can see the whole show on YouTube and there was a audience

I was thinking about the first one. But the tracks weren't performed in a row, were they? And the stage set-up kinda makes it lose that "concert"-feel.

Why are there 3 people singing the lead on Sloop John B? Not their best work. Seems like Mike's band has always struggled finding someone to sing Sloop John B well. Those 2 songs are 2 of their weakest in my mind. Mike's group does a nice job on many songs. Those songs not so much. They require strong leads.

These videos are labelled as being shot in New Hampshire in 2007, I don't think I saw them on the list. The 2007 touring band isn't the best lineup but it's a very interesting record of the Christian Love/ Randell Kirsch/ more Bruce leads era of the band. Lots of videos from the show are on the same youtube channel along with a lot of other concert clips from various classic rock acts.

I actually like Bruce getting more leads. Even though his voice isn't what it once was, it's nice to have more leads by real Beach Boys.

Totally agree. Obviously some parts pretty much need someone else to fill in the Carl and/or Brian parts but I always felt like Bruce could/ should (and probably still could in most cases) have handled the leads on Don't Worry Baby, Good Vibrations, Wouldn't It Be Nice, and a few others with the right key/ arrangement adjustments. It would have made the touring infinitely more appealing to me.

I totally agree with that. Bruce's falsetto is still totally intact (He does the outro of Fun Fun Fun every show) , so I could see him taking lead on Don't Worry Baby

I don't think Bruce's voice was ever strong enough to wail out DWB by himself. Personally I hate his YSGTM, his voice just isn't strong enough. Bruce had the range, always has though I am sure he's lost some but his voice never had much strength to belt out a falsetto part. Falsetto part in a stack of harmonies, he's great with. One of the best harmony singers ever.

Bruce is a total crap shoot touring now.  In the past 10 years I've heard him sound wonderful, other times awful.

It's been a while since I watched a lot of footage from that era of the band; wow, Bruce really *does* adjust the mic about 57 times during songs sometimes.

The thing I've always thought is weird is how ill-at-ease Bruce seems singing songs in the last few decades, especially for a guy who has (now) 60 years in the business. It's strange, because when he, say, busted out "I Write the Songs" in 1980 or something, he seemed to have no problem with singing confidently and whatnot.

I tried to ask in one of the other threads if there was anyone that could capture it, because indeed the usual online tools to archive video from these sites did not work.

I figured it would be taken down pretty quickly. I thought it would have been a good tool to study Mike's current lineup. What I was able to watch was interesting and informative. As I mentioned in the other thread, I was surprised how low-energy the band was. Not surprising considering they do weeks of shows with barely a day off. It was one of my first extended chances to hear a non-YouTube-audience quality video of Eichenberger singing, and I was surprised how bland it sounded.

Any idea what venue the show was at HJ ?....guessing if it was an outdoor fair show, one can/could come away with that impression.  I will say I heard Mike's group last year in a smaller concert hall venue in Seattle and I felt that BE was the blend that has made the current group somewhat more comparable to listening to BW band in the same venue.  I guess what I'm saying is Scott has been given much more to work with having BE in the group.

I think the pro-shot video of Mike was from this event, which apparently took place in a hangar:

https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/the-beach-boys/2017/american-airlines-hanger-dallas-tx-5be09f1c.html

Eichenberger isn't bad by any means; there's a reason he was poached from Brian's band. I just found his lead vocal on "Then I Kissed Her", while technically perfectly fine, to be rather bland and came across like a guy doing a job.

As far as the band being run down in the video, that's purely due to Mike's excessive touring schedule. They did 14 shows in 15 nights between October 21 and November 5 for instance. Foskett sounded a bit flat and raspy, and everybody in the band seemed somewhat low energy. Whatever audience is at the tail end of like 20 shows in 22 nights is probably going to get slightly lesser of a show.

Lead singer and lyricist of The Beach Boys, Mike Love is joined by his band to talk about their new album “Unleash the Love,” available in stores now. They even perform for the audience.

They "performed" (mimed) Unleash and St Nick the week prior to whatever that performance on Facebook documented for Hallmark Channel at the Christmas tree lighting ceremony, as detailed in another thread here. "Unleash" was never aired, but it was done as this audience video shows below. And again, it was a lip-synch job, not a performance. So it's not a big loss at all.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5lzE4a9oyM (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5lzE4a9oyM)

Looks like Mike got a tie-in deal with Hallmark Channel somehow through his management, which is a shame because Hallmark had to break away from their Christmas movie marathons to show whatever Mike was offering, lol. Not much discussion of the appearances, so I guess it wasn't widely watched?

Thanks. But I realize it's mimed to a pre-recorded track, so it wouldn't be a candidate for the list.
I really don't know about these things, so I apologize if this has been discussed over and over, but I see there's the Beach Boys logo behind the band. As they apparently played "Unleash the love" as well (see the article I posted above that mentions that that is a new Beach Boys song - although to be fair it says Mike Love and The Beach Boys) wouldn't this be a violation against the BRI license? I don't want to start a Mike bashing festival, I really don't know about the legal side of it, but it's also interesting to me to see these kind of details, especially after the lawsuit against Brian for that free CD in ~ 2005

Your question and curiosity about how BB name license works is a absolutely justified.

The long and short of it is that once Mike hits a stage or other public performance venue, whether a concert hall or a TV studio, and whether he's playing live or miming, he *can* use the "Beach Boys" name.

I've always wondered why BRI wrote the license to allow Mike to use the name for TV appearances and things like that rather that solely public, ticketed concert events. TV appearances are kind of a weird animal that's in between a "concert" and a "released recording." In my mind anyway. Especially when he's plugging a solo album recording.

But yes, outside of releasing music, Mike can use the "Beach Boys" name for mimed or live performances, TV or "regular" concerts, and he can perform any music he wants.

The 1998 pro-shot video with David Marks and with Matt Jardine still in the band is from a May 1998 private/corporate gig for Toyota employees.

They were technically not cleared yet to call themselves the Beach Boys. I think at one point during the video you can see Bruce unbutton his shirt and display a "Beach Boys" t-shirt underneath. I'm sure Al would have been sued into oblivion (on top of all the other lawsuits) had he done that on stage in 1998 or 1999 with his band.

On a side note, Mike has said that he invited Brian and Al to perform with The Beach Boys for this event. If they said yes (assuming Mike actually asked), would they have done a horrible autotuned lip sync? Would they have mimed to the same track that Mike was going to and ended up using?

I'm sure that's one of many reasons Brian and Al would turn down such an offer. It would have been beyond insane to waste another reunion on a low-profile, lip-sync (to an over-autotuned Mike solo recording) job, at a b-list event on a b-list cable network, at an event presided over by an unhappy, unpopular politician.

As I said in another post, imagine the Beatles reuniting in 1976 and choosing to lip-sync to a Lennon solo re-recording of "I Want to Hold Your Hand", and doing it on a local TV station.

I sense that, in general, Brian and Al may well not appreciate being "invited" for a one-shot deal to play in their OWN band.

You can see him at 0:29 at the right frame during the Back In The U. S. S. R. video. But much more prominently you can see him on Surfin' Safari (that's the link that is on the list on page 1)

Zesterz, I agree. I know he has his own gigs with the Surf City Allstars (they're great, especially with Dean Torrence), however, I think Dave deserves some more high profile gigs. He could slide into Brian or Mike's band seamlessly, as he's done over the years.

Nice find! Hopefully the full show pops up somewhere

It looks like that clip of Eichenberger was posted on Mike's (relatively rarely used) official YouTube channel. So it's not like the footage "leaked" or anything. It also appears to either be a raw tap of an in-house video feed, or something cobbled together from a couple of sort of "semi-pro" video camera shots.

The only recent Mike tour item that was worth trying to capture was that pro-shot charity gig that was uploaded for a short time late last year. I tried to get someone to figure out a way to save and capture it for posterity (the typical "web tools" for trying to save that sort of stuff weren't working), but it appears nobody was able to capture it. While the band sounded tired and ragged, it was the first *full* pro-shot Mike show to be seen in eons, and was a good/accurate document of his tour/band.

Same here, nothing worked.

Interestingly, in the video Mike introduced a song by saying "we have a new album out..." and then proceeded to play "All The Love in Paris"..

Same. I tried all available resources to me to try to capture AT LEAST the audio and nothing worked. Major bummer. Hope it resurfaces soon....

Ian, if you read this (really, if anyone knows about this): Do you know if the show The Beach Boys played in the Baywatch episode was more than the three songs that were shown? In other words: Was it a full show? I'm not certain but that must've been one of only a couple of shows that featured Al and David but not Carl. I guess Carl and Brian didn't bother to appear in the hypothetical rest of the show, did they?

Couldn't find a better picture:

Al and Dave did a number of shows together in later 1997 and a couple in 1998.

The rare combo would be Dave and Carl. There is apparently no pic of them together post-1963. Dave did a few guest bits in the intervening years while Carl was there. But they never played a full show together after 1963.

Thank you! This era is quite confusing to me as I haven't read "The lost Beach Boy" and neither Ian and Jon's book (there is still so much other non Beach Boy stuff I want to read before I can even think about those books). I had in my mind that Dave came back after Carl died and Al was dismissed.
So if you say that a show with Carl and David is the rare thing, then in theory this Baywatch performance could've been such an occasion as Carl was still active in the touring group and was there for part of the Baywatch shootings (as well as Brian). The question would be if the show that was seen in the episode was part of a whole concert or just those three songs. Neither Carl nor Brian were on stage for the shown performance, so I guess they also weren't around for any other possible part of the show. It would be a stupid decision to use only footage without the Wilsons as especially Brian's involvement was hyped prior to the airing.
It would also be interesting to know how and why David got there. He is only seen on stage and doesn't get a mention - it should be noted though that the only Beach Boy whose name is mentioned in the whole episode is Mike. David is also not in the scene at Mike's house where Mike, Al and Bruce (plus some bikini clad blondes in their 20s  ::) ) present Mitch (Davied Hasselhof) the "new" song they are working on ("Summer in paradise").

Carl wasn't a part of any of the "concert" elements of that "Baywatch" episode, for whatever reason.

The only instances I know of as far as Dave and Carl both being on stage post-1963 would be the hand full of the random BB concerts over the years (described loosely in "The Lost Beach Boy"; mainly taking place in the 80s and 90s) where Dave would sit in near the end of the show for a song or two. As described in the book, Dave would sometimes even demur and forego *that* level of participation.

It's definitely worth picking up "The Lost Beach Boy", where the Carl-Al-Dave 1997 musical chairs are described in as much detail as is currently available publically. Contrary to popular belief, according to that book, Dave was not brought in later 1997 to stand in for Carl. According to the book, Mike was actively seeking Dave out in 1997 (while Al and Carl were still touring) with eye towards Dave replacing *Al*. It just so happens, apparently, that the timing weirdly shook out so that right as Carl had to take time off from touring in August of 1997 (at that time not assumed to necessarily be a permanent situation), Dave was ready to join up.

The band did a few gigs in August/September after Carl's departure with just the three-man lineup of Mike, Bruce, and Al.

Some of Mike's side band ("California Beach Band") gigs were mixed in around this time.

When the "Beach Boys" tour ramped back up near the end of September 1997, Dave was on board. Al was still in the band at this time. As described in the "The Lost Beach Boy", and in a classic "Spinal Tap" type moment, Al apparently simply wasn't told that Dave was back in the band. He literally just continued to notice that Dave kept showing up for gigs, and was playing the entire gig. It didn't take Al long to figure out that this wasn't like past instances of Dave sitting in for a few songs, etc. As described in the book, he confronted Dave, found out Dave was actually fully "back" in the band, and apparently immediately knew that this meant it was "all over"; Al likely knew at that stage that his days were numbered. Al knew more about why Dave was there than Dave did, again according to the book.

It appears the Mike-Bruce-Al-Dave lineup did more shows through September/October/November of 1997.

Carl passed away in February 1998, and Mike (along with sometimes Bruce and Dave) was sporadically doing side gigs before and after that date, usually as "California Beach Band." This also included a pre-game "Super Bowl" lip-synched performance in January 1998 with Bruce, Dave and others, and without Al (and obviously Carl who was days away from his death).

Al also played at least two gigs in 1998 as well, after Carl's death, apparently gigs that he had already contracted to do. These I believe were in April/May 1998.

Matt Jardine was still in the touring band at this time, and did some gigs in 1998 after Al was no longer in the band.

Without Al in the band and after Carl's death, Mike-Bruce-Dave first continued to book gigs as "California Beach Band", and I believe it was around July of 1998 that Mike obtained (a then non-exclusive) license to tour as "The Beach Boys", which he did with the Mike-Bruce-Dave lineup until July of 1999 when Dave left.

And we of course likely know how the lineups shook down after that point.

Yep, I've always thought the next Spinal Tap-type movie that gets made should steal that one idea: The band hires a new member, but simply doesn't tell one of the pre-existing members even after the new member starts showing up for gigs.

It should also be mentioned that "The Lost Beach Boy" not only details Al confronting Dave and being understandably frustrated, knowing more than Dave did, but the book also points out that Al has since made it clear he now knows that Dave didn't know all of the politics surrounding the issue back at the time, and realizes Dave was essentially another innocent victim of the whole debacle.

So this appeared for about a week after the performance and was taken down.  It was a pro shot, direct audio from the soundboard, performance and is a pretty fair representation of the touring group at the time.  Unfortunately, no one as far as I know was able to download the performance before it was taken down.  Hopefully it will turn up on YouTube or something.
