Title: OK, I just have to ask...
Post by: TheLazenby on February 08, 2006, 08:05:40 AM
I've never heard "Hey Little Tomboy", but read the lyrics of the album version.  I've also heard over and over about how bad the original, unreleased version was.  Anyone care to elaborate??

Spoken in the song:

"And now you're going to shave your legs for the very first time!"

Nuff said.

It sounds like a bunch of pervy old blokes drooling over a teenage girl.

"Take her out a time or two"

Spoken by Mike in his best Humbert Humbert voice.  :-\

'Xactly.

The line that worries me the most is Mike singing

"Hey little tomboy sit here on my lap/I got things that I gotta tell you"

Dunno about California, but you can get arrested for that in the UK.

Thankfully, the printed lyrics give you no clue about how Mike Love intones the line "I'm gonna teach you to keh-he-hesss". It's one of the THE Beach Boys moments; beyond good and bad, beyond good and evil.

I love this song.  I know everybody else hates it, but to me there's something so quintessentially Beach Boys about it.  That lead up to the chorus with Mike going "I'm gonna teach you to ki-i-iss, you're gonna feel just like thi-i-iss..." and Brian comes back with falsetto "they're doin' it all over the worrrrlllddd..."   Solid Gold, baby!

I really dig "Matchpoint of Our Love" too, so I guess that really puts me out of step with most other BB/BW fans.  :(

OK, I'm gonna take this even further - what's wrong with "Battle Hymn of the Republic" and "Wrinkles"??  (I haven't heard those two either...)

Title: Re: OK, I just have to ask...

"Battle Hymn" is just plain hysterical, taken at just too fast a clip for Mike to sing properly (not to mention the world's worst recorded banjo solo...).

"Wrinkles"... is about a dog. A dead dog. Here's the first verse:

"She once had a doggie named Wrinkles
Who went with her pigtails and freckles.
Just like a tisket and a tasket
He came one Christmas in a basket"

Excuse me... I don't feel too good...

Yeah, Tomboy, if it doesn't cross the line,...it surely makes the line visible.  The line that you don't see when you hear Roller Skating Child, etc...with lyrics like "we'll do more when your mama's not around."

BUT...I prefer to think of it as "middle-aged man buys corvette."  Not "middle-aged man buys corvette and waits outside of school."  You know, since its them reliving youth in music and reliving the youthful spirit of what the Beach Boys music represents.

I should be lawyer.  ::)

which begs the rhyme (since this is a dead dog lament)

"he left one Christmas in a casket"

(just guessing! Never heard this myself)

I think the most disturbing thing about the song is that in the first verse it sounds like a father talking to his daughter who is most likely in her early teens, and that in the second verse she somehow turned into a lust object.

And you just might receive a post-Feminist slap for uttering "Two Girls For Every Boy"  . . . in certain circles . . . or not, depending.

Just some more strange Brian Wilson lyrics.  It starts out as if its a father figure maybe talking to a young "tomboy" about growing up and becoming more feminine.....weird enough by itself and certainly not PC, even by 70's standards.  Then it shifts gears and says "I'm gonna teach you to kiss".......ooops!!  not a daddy speaking any more!
Then you wonder if it's a potential boyfriend's perspective..........still weird because the boy then seems too old with his perspective...too old to be hitting on a little "tomboy".

I just can't make those lyrics work....

I think Brian had trouble writing lyrics sometimes.  Should have brought in Mike Love on this one.

"Three-fifteen and the bell starts a-ringin'
The girls start walkin' home from school
Three-fifteen and the bell keeps on a-ringin'
and everything is gettin' cool

It's so hard to walk home
When you're walkin' alone.
I slow down in my car
And I pull to the kerb"

"Lazy Lizzie". Pretty unambiguous if you ask me. Definite touch of the Errols.

What's the big deal... he was once 13 and liked 13 year old girls, right. 13 was his starting point and he continues to go roll it!  ;D ;D
I'm older now and I initially liked older women... I still like older women. Although those older women slowly draw closer to my own age!  ;D The difference being, older women can't get me put in the hoosgow.
I'm not arguing, just being retarded.  ;D

2. putting it into song is... wierd. Releasing it is... wierder.

This does raise an interesting ethical question.  It's actually an interesting subject, in terms of historical precedent and what not.  I'm talking about societal acceptance of attraction, the "normality" of being attracted to thirteen year olds, etc.  Interesting sociological and societal subject.

Oh how the topic of Brian Wilson doing things to himself is so not pleasing.

He was so into Marilyn while he was a few years older. Had her going to his place in the morning hours. Bet they weren't reading to each other or playing scrabble.

Then lusting over her sisters.

You know he wanted them all in bed but couldn't bring himself to ask.

"Would you gals like to hear how loud my falsetto goes in bed?"

Man Katie, that's the happiest I've seen Brian in a picture in a long time, lol.  No kidding, the last time he looked like that is on the Brian Wilson in Concert DVD when Ronnie Spector visits him backstage.  Then, and in your pictures, he looks like he's have a coronary.  He gave you a high-5? How friekin' cool is it that Brian Wilson gave you a High 5?

Yes. It was a BW solo track credited to the BBs which you got for free on a little flexi when you bought California Barbie.
It was originally titled Christine.

You could of course look at a lot of lyrics - even Mr Holier-than-thou Bruce Springsteen (his words), apart from trawling the flesh-pits of New Jersey is a frequent user of the phrase 'hey little girl - followed by something like...with the red dress on.... - in approx 50% of all known songs written by him.

It does get harder for these poor writers who are still writing teen ballads in their 40's, 50's and 60's not to sound a little creepy.

On the other hand most of them end up divorcing their wives and running off with their 20 year old nanny, so....(Pete Townshend also comes to mind...).

Rock Stars and film stars just never have to admit they are old and past it as there is always another young hotty on hand who wants the money and fame these old guys bring with them.

Nothing new, used to happen with the nobilty....

I could be way off here, but I think you all are looking way too deep into the thing of Brian writing lyrics about making love to teenage girls. As I said, you could be right and Brian is somewhat of a pedophile, but it would seem to me that the reason Brian likes to write so much about teenage girls is because that's the subject of so many of his favourite songs he listened to growing up, of all of those Spector hits, even of the songs that he wrote so many years ago that made him famous. Perhaps he writes about that because those are the kind of lyrics he's comfortable writing, or because he wants to write a song that will potentially be a hit with the younger listeners. We all know how concerned Brian is about younger people liking his music. Anyway, that's just the way I see it.

Funny as hell this is. I think he said he made the Barbie record to brighten up peoples childhood so that is exempt. You guys forget the talking parts in Lazy Lizzie something like "come on-it's Ok". I don't know I am a big Jerry Lee fan, and Elvis for that matter. I don't think dating teenagers was that uncommon for men in their early 20s back then. Certainly not the stigma of today. I think Lewis only got in trouble because she was his 2nd cousin and he forgot to divorce his othet wife >:D.

Songs like "Tomboy" and "Lizzie" are best enjoyed on the down-low.  Fortunately "Lizzie" remains unreleased, but accessible.  I kinda wish "Tomboy" had suffered a similar fate.  I literally cringed when I heard it for the first time, at the age of 15 or 16.

I don't get why they didn't rewrite the lyrics completely to make "tomboy" a normal song because the backing track is pretty good.

Hey little girl come sit on my knee
'Cos you know that summer's looming
Gonna grab my woodie and get on down
To a bit of internet grooming

There's place I love to go
Where the girls are really pretty
If there's grass on the pitch, then I say play
An' I'll see you all in Paedophile City.
