How is 'complete discography' being defined? Do you own every BBs single, even the foreign picture sleeve issues and every greatest hits ever released? Or do you just mean the main studio albums, not including multiply-reissued material? Every officially released studio recording? Albums and/or singles?

If it's the former, then there is no band's catalogue i own 'everything' of.

But I do own every proper album by:
BBs/Brian Wilson
Blind Melon
Jefferson Airplane
Beatles
Gillian Welch
Kula Shaker
Stephen Stills

Beach Boys
Commander Venus
Danzig
The Dresden Dolls
Nick Drake
The Misfits
The Moon
The Turtles

Loaf, do you have Just Roll Tape by Stephen Stills?

Hey Loaf - I own most  of the Hot Tuna albums by Jefferson Airplane alumni and really love those but I have no J.A  in my collection.  Which J.A. album do you recommend as their best?

I bought that album, and I tried, and I tried, and I TRIED to dig it....but I couldn't. They lost their edge. I love Gillian though....she really contributed to the feel of the music with her amazing 80's keyboarding and synthesizing....did I mention that I love her?

Beck for me too. I'm not as crazy about the Clapton era as others are. However, I will say the the Page lineup was the bestas far as  live performance... shame that the material was so weak at that point.

Re: Stephen Stills.
I have Just Roll Tape, and it's a fascinating document. The sound quality is excellent. Half the songs on it have not been released, and though you can kind of see why, they are much better than the unreleased demos from the Buffalo Springfield box set. It's also great to hear an early version of Treetop Flyer. The 'Stills Alone' version doesn't cut it (that electro-acoustic sound is half the problem...for a guy with an extensive collection of Martin acoustic guitars, he sure manages to get a sucky electro-acoustic sound).

But if you ever hear Stills' King Biscuit Flower Hour solo show from '75-76, that is probably the definitive Treetop Flyer.

Re: Jefferson Airplane.
My personal favourite album is 'After Bathing at Baxter's' which i own several times, but that is their most psychedelic and 'far out' album. If you're a Hot Tuna fan, you might prefer a later album where Jorma gets more songwriting credits. 'Volunteers' is their last great album as a band, and has Jorma's version of Good Shepherd. If i remember correctly, 'Bark' has a song on it called Wild Turkey, that Jorma originally demoed with David Crosby and the Dead during their 1970 jam sessions. i like that one too.

Jorma's best playing has to be on Embryonic Journey from 'Surrealistic Pillow'. Solo acoustic. One guitar, though it sounds like three.

The JA splinter projects of the early 70s were better than the JA albums, albums like 'Blows Against The Empire', which has one of David Crosby's best co-writes Have You Seen the Stars Tonight. Spacy in all senses of the word (or at least three of them).

Their last two albums actually were recorded without Gillian, "Get Ready" (2001) and "Waiting For The Sirens' Call" (2005). But I agree, especially "Waiting..." is an uninspired mess. "Get Ready" has some good songs on it, but it's too long, and nowhere near as good as their earlier work with Gillian. But they split up last year, a wise decision......

I'll have to check out those two albums...And you're right about Buck Dharma (Don Roeser); he has to be among the most underrated musicians. You rarely see his name mentioned these days when the topic of "great guitarists" comes up. But it should!

I like the Clapton singles, but they really got good in 1965. The Page era could have been great land live they were terrific then. Think About It was a great song from the last lineup.

I've got some Billy Joel stuff. His first album Cold Spring Harbor is a favorite. Try to find the original pressing. It's not badly mastered as he says, and You Can Make Me Free is much longer turning into a Hey Jude styled jam. Great stuff.

Even identifying all the side bands with OTC personnel is a full-time job, much less finding and buying them all.

There was a great guide in the '90s, which made it pretty simple. After about 2000, it was all about just keeping up with the latest post-OTC releases. But I have to admit that, besides Frosted Ambassador, I really only keep up with the Will Cullen hart and Bill Doss side of that personnel.

Title: Re: Which bands do you own a COMPLETE discography for?
Post by: the captain on May 27, 2008, 02:12:45 PM
See, that's just it: Sunshine Fix and Circulatory System, that's easy. But start chasing down the other dozen or so people's other bands, and then realizing they branch out into however many others ad infinitum... The Instruments, by the way, just released a new album, Dark Smaland. (Heather McIntosh leading a group with a few OTCers) Jeff Mangum sings prominent harmonies on a few tracks, as he has done for them on other albums.

Title: Re: Which bands do you own a COMPLETE discography for?
Post by: brianc on May 28, 2008, 10:58:27 AM
Well, it's not just Sunshine Fix and Circulatory System, you also have two Black Swan Network releases and one Frosted Ambassador. Then the two OTC albums-proper, plus the b-sides collection. All of these are available on vinyl, except Frosted Ambassador. So nine albums.

I mean, I DO go way deeper into Elephant Six bands, which all seem to have worked with one another, in some way, shape or form, but I wouldn't consider those to be OTC albums... more like Elephant Six Orchestra albums. That can just go on and on. Although I was really into it during the first wave, from about 1996-2000. I have tons of E6 side-bands and stuff. But since that time, only a few releases really interested me, like albums by Of Montreal, Apples in Stereo and Dressy Bessy. But that's just me. I'm sure there are people who have followed all of the permutations.

Oh, wait, one other OTC thing was that they backed Kahimi Karie on a bunch of tracks from her "Tilt" album, as well as having two tracks on the Sony-Japan BW tribute "Smiling Pets." Both are awesome albums.

Title: Re: Which bands do you own a COMPLETE discography for?
Post by: the captain on May 28, 2008, 01:04:26 PM
I hate Smiling Pets, although I do like the two OTC tunes most. Still, not much at all. I think the best albums coming out of the E6 crew these days are Of Montreal, Instruments and Hawk and a Hacksaw, all of which don't even really resemble the old E6 stereotypes much anymore.

Title: Re: Which bands do you own a COMPLETE discography for?

I wasn't saying that was all there were, btw. I was just saying that following those related bands could get trickier after those, which are pretty easy to find even in indie record stores. Oh, and you're missing an OTC album: the John Peel sessions album.

Title: Re: Which bands do you own a COMPLETE discography for?
Post by: brianc on May 28, 2008, 02:14:56 PM
Ah, yes, I have that one too. Man, it's incredible. I actually like that Peel sessions as much as the other two. I took the time to get most of the '90s E6 stuff I love on vinyl, well, because I was stupid and got obsessed for a few years there, hating on CDs in general. That Peel sessions one was another that never hit LP.

Can't say I've followed much E6 in the past five or six years, but Of Montreal keeps getting better and better. I always considered them a second tier E6 band in the '90s, but they have gotten so incredible. "The Past Is a Grotesque Animal"... oh, man. Also, Robert Schneider's non-Pythagorean experiments were really amazing too.

Title: Re: Which bands do you own a COMPLETE discography for?

I've never seen the Black Swan Network ones in any indie store, on CD or vinyl. Frosted Ambassador has gotten pretty scarce too. But, yeah, regular Sunshine Fix, Circulatory System and OTC... pretty simple.

I don't even have all the Beach Boys discography - and I've got 2,045 songs/120 albums listed under The Beach Boys in my iTunes.

I have every Coldplay, Beatles, Brian Wilson, and U2 album. Almost every Van Dyke Parks album. And that's about it I think.

I have hundreds of artists in my library, but I'm not much of a completionist I guess.

Edit: I lied. just remembered I don't have Brian's Christmas album!

i'm one of the music freaks & i also have to have them in chronological order as well.

Honestly? None of them. Closest I got was Steely Dan when the box set Citizen: Steely Dan included all of the released albums at the time.

I'll never get around to listening to everything out there so usually I just poke around and grab albums that I like. Actually pretty surprised so many of you guys own full discographies of a bunch of different artists.

The Velvet Underground
The Beatles.
(both of those in boxsets)
Spiritualized.
Richard Hawley.
I can't even say The Stooges, because I wouldn't let someone pay me to listen to The Weirdness. So I'm going to pretend it doesn't exist. So The Stooges.

Think that's it.

Dennis Wilson
I wanna say the Beach Boys but i refuse to purchase anything from the eighties or summer in paradise. heck, i won't even steal it. Everything else but the Surfin Safari/Surfin USA double that i'm debating buying tho :)
Muse
70's Pink Floyd (the Waters era)
The Rolling Stones (again except their later stuff. i have all the albums that are even recognized slightly so i'll count this)

Assuming we're just talking studio albums, and not counting discographies that only consist of a few albums at most, the only band I can count is the Beatles.

Anyone have the complete or near complete discography of Frank Zappa? And did you have to win the Lottery/rob a bank/sell a kidney to do so?

None.

Wait, there might be a near complete Sparks collection somewhere in my living space. It doesn't all belong to me, though.

For a short time I tried getting as much of Ennio Morricone's output as I could. I stopped.

From what I understand, getting a complete Morricone discography is the most insane undertaking a record collector could attempt. Which doesn't mean I wouldn't like to try....

All I own anymore, is Beatles, The WHO, and that's it, in terms of a complete studio discography. Oh and probably the Zombies.

However, that's because of various divorces, moving, disruptions in my life, at one time or another, I had complete discographies
for probably 35-50 groups. Steppenwolf, Stones, Eagles, Tom Petty, Queen, McCartney, Lennon, Harrison, Brian Wilson, quite a few
people. Mostly 60's 70's rock/pop people.CSNY,

Sometimes I don't want a complete discography, and I only like certain periods or albums. Queen For example. I loved, like, uh
maybe the second or third studio album through the 7th or 8th. Or the Beach Boys, I liked 64-70. and then one or two more
I don't like post Wilson Beach Boys much, I had never heard of getcha back, or their version of California Dreamin, (which has WIlson)
They are kind of awful, I don't want those albums. Kokomo is worth having, as a single.

The Zombie have two recent album, their whole discography is only like five or six albums, 64-2012, can you believe that.

Beatles on CD, that's about it. I guess U2 as well, but I never bought No Line On The Horizon.

As far as my music collection goes, I have complete studio album collections on my iPod from these artists with five or more albums....

The Beatles
The Replacements
U2

Well, that's probably it.....I mean, I have like over 400 artists in my iTunes and over 20,000 tracks. I listen to over 200 new albums a year beyond all of the older stuff that I've delved deeper into (which is pretty much the entirety of rock history, indie or otherwise). It's just that a lot of artists usually make a clunker or two after being around for quite a while. R.E.M. for example is one of my favorite bands, but I dislike most of the Up record and found nothing to appreciate on Collapse Into Now. The Smashing Pumpkins were pretty much the soundtrack to my childhood and captured a lot of emotions that I was feeling, but I've despised everything they've done since Corgan "reunited" the band. Pearl Jam has flat out sucked for over ten years now, etc.

Lots of bands with smaller catalogs like The Zombies or Nick Drake or Jimi Hendrix or Joy Division or whatever. But again, most artists that release enough records will usually have a glaring misstep or simply make something that's a duller version of ground they had already covered.

No E6 discussion is complete without at least mentioning NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL!!!!

Yeah, I deserve the eyebrow raise.   ;D  I had all of Celine's albums before I realized what great singing/songwriting was.  I should also mention that I am just a couple albums short of the whole studio output of Bruce Springsteen, Queen, and Billy Joel.

Thanks for the props for ABBA.  Most people just think of them as a 'disco' band, but in the words of U2's, The Edge, "ABBA have written the best pop music of all time''.

As for the Blue Oyster Cult, I agree with the previous post praising Buck Dharma's guitar playing. But these guys can sing, too. I saw them last in the '90's at a small club and they were utterly awesome in every way. They did "The Golden Age Of Leather" which has a boy's choir doing the harmonies on the Spectres LP. The BOC did those harmony parts themselves and stunned me with how good it sounded. I bet they could pull off a version of Don't Worry Baby that would knock your socks off. And yes, I know, Eric Bloom once said "I tell you, I ain't playin' no surf music."

Yap, the artist for that LP was simply "The Crickets". A common 'mistake'.

Not really a mistake. Buddy Holly was in the Crickets, but only made one album with them. Which is the one I own.

As a side note, my 2004 re-release of The "Chirping" Crickets lists Buddy Holly & The Crickets as the artist on the spine.

Yes, mistake. The "Chirping" Crickets is the title of the album, not name of the band. So, you'd better write "Buddy Holly & The Crickets"; we don't list the actual discography here, only the list of artists we own in entirety. Hope it's all clear now for you.

You're welcome, Mr. Waves. I like to help newbies where I can. There should be more new people on this place.

As for myself, I have my faves only digitally (unfortunately). NRBQ, The Freak Scene, Kaleidoscope etc.

Not sure what you mean by that. Are you addressing to one of our informative posters the captain now?

I see now. Mr. Waves, why so ironic? Instead of going with that captain remark, you could just chock it off to simple "ditto" or +1.
