I'd like to do something. I'm thinking maybe "Hotter" or something else from Sweet Insanity. Anyways, put me on the list.

I'd love love to have another go and make something for vol. II, so put me down for something. I have some songs that may be ok for it, but much better I think to record something new, just for the cd.

Do we have a title yet?

I'd love to do something. Just give me time and I can work something out!

I've been thinking of a way to add backing harmony and arranging "Girl Don't Tell Me". But I'm debating between that, or something from Sunflower.

I was working on the lead vocal to "It's About Time" last night, just for some warm-up practice. But I'm not positive on what I'm going to be doing yet. I'll work on some more vocal work tonight, if nothing comes up that I have to do. I really hope I can finish something for this. An a capella thing if nothing else

I wouldn't mind doing another track on vol 2.
Only I fancy doing a cover this time rather than just taking a track off my album.

I'm thinking "Getting Hungry" could be cool.

"This next one's an instrumental...NO VOICES...JUST INSTRUMENTS" haha gotta love Bri, and Mike does the same thing in the BBoy shows too. This next one is all a capella, no instruments just voices. hahah

Title: Re: Volume 2 Anthology CD [Sign up thread]
Post by: b.dfzo on February 06, 2006, 04:17:30 PM
Yeah, I liked it when Mike introduced the intro to "Why Do Fools Fall In Love" that way, real emphatic..."No instruments, just...A...CAPPELLA...Listen closely."  They did it, then after deeming that it was "so good" that it should be heard again, he initiated it once again!  After all, he IS the star of the Beach Boys Touring Band.

It's actually five seperate, non-foldback isochronous repeats.

I'm strongly thinking of doing "Susie Cincinnati", or "It's About Time"

huh? sorry hahah

I e-mailed this band that I performed with last semester if they would like to be a part of doing this with me. They have all the instruments required to do "Susie Cincinnati"  (harmonicas, guitars, bass guitar, drums, vocals, etc. etc.) 8)

I'm about 3/4's of the way through 'A Day In The Life Of A Tree' .. what a difficult song to pick apart and make it your own :-\

Thing is: I want to make the vocal as emotive as Jack Reilly's voice, but .. my QC wants to go higher ;D

.. and I haven't really made an honest stab at the BB's vocals yet ::)

Very fine line, fellas .. very fine line 8)

I have several choices to choose from. I'm thinking about doing an original; I was playing around, trying to cover , "Let Him run Wild"and ended up making a completely new song.  I guess I can't do a straight cover without making a brand new song.
Here's the link for the wav. http://s64.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0RMDB416S31D11MDY0VK5WMXDD

The synth string part in this was actually written by myself for vocals, but as I do not know of any good harmony singers personally, I used synths instead. One day I'd like to re-record it with an actual group.

edit....okay...this is taking FORVER. While I wait for the yousendit to upload, here's the url for the mp3 that you guys can listen to and give feedback.

Well, I finished my track tonight...

I hope I don't offend by taking-over one of
BW's (and PMcC's  ;D) most beloved tracks...

My submission is entitled "God's Only Nose"...

It's a distillation/edit of the roughly 20 minutes of all the
"God Only Knows" stuff from the PS Sessions boxset...

There's a few musical puns and other clever
little oddities brought out by the edits...

I'm hoping it'll get a couple of grins from the resident
cognoscenti, surely nobody else would ever 'get it'... ;)

The first CD's title was inspired by a line from one of the entries...

I was thinking I'd let serendipity name Volume 2 also...

However, if anyone has a suggestion, I'm all for voting on it...

"It" is "us" after all... ;)

I like it.  Only I would use a colon, ie. "It is Us: A Bunch of Us that Like Brian Wilson and Do Our Thing".  So be it, I say.

first CD to tie the two projects together
(most of you have not seen the graphics that I did)...

What is everybody working on so far? I'm torn between "I'M Broke" and "Awake", I have the words and chords to 'i'm broke' I have the chords and worked out nice harmony for 'awake' but I need the lyrics....(or maybe I'll ditch all of those ideas, and submit "God please let us go on this way" I have always loved that one...the choices are mind-boggling...

I'm working on an original modular style composition...actually I've been tinkering with it for awhile but I decided to use this project as a kick in the ass for me to finish it.  It's getting there, but I'm starting to suffer from Wilson-like indecisiveness when it comes to the placement of the sections.  I just keep second guessing myself.  It'll come together I'm sure, but it can be very trying at times!

Hi guys,

Long time no see, but following everyone's song choices with interest...

Just for the record, I've decided to to make a version of Brian's Still I Dream Of It, which I have to say is one my favourite things that he's done. I thought of doing a version anyway, a while before our anthology series, but I've been playing it a fair bit recently so its gonna be the one!

April 1st, though... gonna have to get cracking...!

I've put together 2 versions for you.

A 1:33 track-only clip of it and 1:36 "proper" version ( .. both taken from the middle of the song) 8)

When I started to take the original apart, I didn't realise just what an intricate song it is. Very, very difficult to "make your own", but I've done the best I can :smokin

The end part reminds me a little bit of 'Holland' :afro

All comments welcome,

Please download the track version first, you can get it here:

Wow...I see what you mean.  The backing track sounds totally different without your vocals.

I'll be posting an MP3 of the vocals I've recorded for Old Master Painter's "Susie Cincinnati" as soon as I can upload it...I quoted a couple things in the background, namely the theme from "WKRP" and a variation on something heard often on a Cincinnati AM station, 700 WLW..."We don't, we don't, we don't mess around!"

...And any caller who doesn't adhere to that motto, will be blotto!

Here it is:

I REALLY surprised myself here, by singing from low E (Which isn't that low...I think it's the lowest note the average male can sing) and a high B (in other words, 6 semi-tones higher than Brian's high F on "Surf's Up".)

So if all fails with Susie Cincinnati (I screwed up and did vocals w/o a backing track) Barry has offered me to lay vocals for his "Then I Kissed Her" track for my submission for this project. So we will see what happens between now and the 1st. Really want to do SC though. If I end up doing "Then I Kissed Her", we'll do SC for Vol. 3 if there is one.

How is it that you/we screwed up?  All that is needed for the backing track to work is to just play along with the BB original track as a "temp track"!  Let me know ASAP.

I wouldn't call that a 'screw-up'...I'd call it a vocal rehearsal until you get the instrumental track in your hands...

Yeah your spot on Paul.

Anyway, Ive sent oldmasterpainter the first bit of the track. I had to take it up one key, so I hope thatlle be OK.

Sorry we couldnt play over the original as a backing, but thats pretty damn hard, when your trying to hear it over the drums etc.

Anyway, oldmasterpainters got it if you need it.

Cheers 8)

Barry you never cease to amaze me. That sounds incredible! Only thing missing is the harmonica (my fav part of the whole song hahah) But damn man, sounds fucking excellent. And the key change is fine shouldn't be a problem at all. I could probablly overdub a little tenor sax rock 'n roll style during that little bridge there before "She'll always pick you up" if you don't mind. Damn man, kudos to you and idigworms on this song haha, wow.

Honestly, I could make a box set with this track....it's just that I always find something to "fix" or make better and everytime I hear it needs some more tuning...I let it sit for 3 weeks just settling in my mind and now I think I've got the best version I can make....with the petty equipment I have....yet the song is so simple["Fall Breaks"]... those are sometimes the hardest ones to make interesting....

Here's a story, I did a demo in 1990 and in 1999 I added 2  more tracks..yes I'm SSSLLLOOOWWWWW>>>>>>

Is that the latest version...?

Barry,

If you want to send the .wav file as a yousendit, that works fine...

Just .wav files, don't send a data-compressed mp3, etc...

And no, it won't be professionally mastered at cello studios, as you say...

It will, however, be professionally mastered at 20to20soundesign... :P

I'm done, I just have to get it into the right format somehow.  All I have is mp3 and I won't have access to the original wav file until thursday night.  When I am able to do that how do you want me to send it?

When I am able to do that how do you want me to send it?

The fastest/easiest way to send me the .wav file would be yousendit.com...

Bill,

Sorry no, I did not receive any email notice
that you had uploaded tracks via yousend it...

If you could upload them again,
and notify me in this thread that they're ready,
I'll download them and then reply back to you here...

Thanks,

OK, let's make the final cutoff May 1, 2006...

It seems like we're going with only 10 tracks
unless anybody else wants to send one in...

Anybody...anybody...?

Thanks all,

I'm thinking we may be able to fit Volumes I & II on one CD...

I'll work out the details on up & download options soon...

I'm also gonna try to upload the graphics so that folks could
DL the whole package as one audio disc w/ insert art... ;)

Details to follow...

I'm working on a recording for Volume III this summer with a friend's music program/studio. I think we're going to work on "Dreamer" by Dennis Wilson. Not sure yet though, but the lead fits my vocal range.

Update:

I'm still lagging a bit behind, I got a gig that involved doing a
remote recording at a local high school's 'Evening of Jazz'...

Three hours of music on a multi-CD set...

Lots of editing all of the 'inbetween' stuff out...

The kids' parents and grannies are very supportive, though...

So far I got orders for 30 sets...

I'm doing the graphics and all the disc dupes 'by hand'... :o

At least it'll cover most of the bills for June... ;)

I'll be back to our stuff soon...

BP

PS - I don't think VI & VII will fit on one disc, but oh well...

I'm in for Vol. III, and working on it this summer.

A title I thought of for III: "Those that didn't make it" or "Here we are" but doesn't have to be the title. Just thought of it for those of us who didn't have enough time to contribute to the 1st and 2nd volume hahah

For torrent files: download the Opera browser. It has bitorrent installed on it and you can download "It Is Us" and the first volume.
