Title: All Beach Boys/Brian Wilson music things you own
Post by: Aegir on January 26, 2006, 05:24:19 PM
I'd love to see some people's collections.

I've only really started buying music of any sort three years ago, so mine's comparitively small.

LPs
Little Deuce Coupe; I think this is a later reissue because it says EMI on it
high water; 70s double LP featuring their 60s hits on sides 1 and 2 and the 1964 concert on 3 and 4
Party!
SMiLE
Smiley Smile and Wild Honey from SimplyVinyl are coming in the mail

CDs
CDR of Pet Sounds; missing Caroline No
CDR of Smile
CDR of Good Timin': Live at Knebworth
Surfin' Safari/Surfin' USA two-fer
Surfer Girl/Shut Down Vol. II two-fer
Smiley Smile/Wild Honey two-fer
Friends/20/20 two-fer
SMiLE
What I Really Want For Christmas
some Christmas compilation (can't recall the title) with Little Saint Nick
CDR of Adult Child coming in the mail
Disney's Beach Party; this is by a different band but was produced by Mark Linett and features Jeff Fosket and Darian Sahanaja on backing vocals -- thought it deserved a mention

DVDs
An American Band/I Just Wasn't Made For These Times

I have over 700 Beach Boys CDs, do I really have to list them all? All the studio albums, all the bootlegged studio material, and over 250 live shows.

I have all the official original released albums bar 'Still Cruisin'' and 'Une Saison En Enfer (Summer In Paradise)'  I know my life isn't really complete, is it?

I have all official BW album releases but no other BB solo albums.  I've heard POB but don't rate it.  I've never heard 'Don't Look Back With Love' -  again, my life's bereft.

In a 1995 article in Uncut magazine Bruce Johnston says when asked if he personally possesses every Beach Boys album ever released (and though I am quoting from memory I think it's as near verbatim as doesn't matter):  "Why would I want to own all of those?  Most of them are sh!t!"

Looks like I've already got too many as it is!  :)

I'm pretty satisfied by my collection. I have basically everything worth having. Nothing left on vinyl or CD to pursue. I'm going to a record show Sunday, but the chances of finding anything new is getting slimmer and slimmer. I think I have just about everthing, although I think there may be some live gigs floating around that I haven't gotten (yet).

I found a video tape of uncut footage of Brian doing interviews and hanging out at his house with Elvis Costello  at last year's show, so you never know.

I'm hoping to find some recordings from last summers US tour.

Well, I do need a copy of "The Wilson Project" book. There's something I need.

With those waves singing Caroline no
Rollin’ down that empty ocean road
Gettin’ to the surf on time.

Long may you run.
Long may you run.
Although these changes have come
With your chrome heart shining in the sun
Long may you run"

I think Nascar is actually good fun. I like it. Nice to hear "Ole' Betsy" taken out for a spin.

Aside from that, well, the only other mandatory purchase is Al's PT Cruiser CD single. Buy 1,000 of the for only $999.00!

What else do you need? Mike started the Beach Boys, and wrote all their great songs. I found that out when Mike Love and the Beach Boys guested on Baywatch. Get with it, man.

Of course.

But Messrs Johnston and Marks are pictured and name-checked on the NASCAR cover and both of them cannot be heard on the tracks.

I have these two pairs of Beach Boys' shorts. They are from the 25th Anniversary Sunkist-sponsored tour. One pair is orange and the other is blue. They are both size large and both have a nice BB/Sunkist logo sewn on them.

And that is much, much more information than anyone could possibly care about.

And they're for sale.

And I also have a real Beach Boys' Beach Ball. It's still in the box. I think it's from around the 15 Big Ones era...

I don't really own a whole lot of material Beach Boys things.  Just all the twofers, most of the books, a few LPs, and a handful of 45s.

But I do own a deep understanding of the Beach Boys that I feel is somewhat unique.  How's that?

I just saw those on sale at Amazon. If you have a first pressing, that's pretty cool though. The CD is cold and lifeless. IMO.

All BBoys studio albums, all Brian studio albums (burnt/bought for all)
Some Unsurpassed stuff
Sweet Insanity
Wouldn't It Be Nice: Brian Wilson and the Making of the Beach Boys' "Pet Sounds"
Endless Harmony DVD and soundtrack
Hawthorne, CA
SMiLE DVD
Some of the 90's acoustic set material
that's all of the audio/video material I believe

Then I have (or got for my friend) a "Kokomo" liscence plate signed by Mike, Bruce and the rest of the band from last year. As well as a signed Pet Sounds with Mike and Bruce's signature on it, and a photo taken with Mike.

um if there's more I'll add later

Forgot to add a few things:

A few of the Hite Morgan-era comps (Lost and Found, the Surfin' disc on Varese Sararbande)
a 15 Big Ones acetate (with a letter on NBC stationary promoting the album and the IT'S OK tv special)
Bruce's Going Public on vinyl
Both Celebration albums on vinyl
and the ugly stepchild of my collection:
a mint condition copy of the Many Moods of Murry Wilson. Never had the desire to play the damn thing.

about Many Moods, didnt he do a cover of the BB? like Warmth of the Sun? I'd be interested in that...and isnt there a song on there written or co-written by Al Jardine?
about Murry's involvement with Sunrays, is any of that good? I've only heard I live for the Sun which was on An American Family which I believe was Jeff Foskett's version. I guess I should buy Jeff's trib/rarities cd. I saw on the tracklisting there's: An American Family theme, what is this?   anyone have the cd?

I haven't played the LP, but someone years ago (before I bought the LP) gave me a tape dub. I listened to it once and put it away.
Yes, Murry does Warmth of the Sun and Al wrote the instrumental "Italia".

I have both box sets as well. I thought it was implied when I said "all studio albums on CD".  I bought the GV box when I was in college - it was a financial choice between that and going to see the BB play at Massey Hall in Toronto(during the "box set tour" of all things!!! man am I still kicking myself over that one!) The PS box was my wife's (who then was my girlfriend) first Christmas present to me.

some of the BB Endless Summer TV shows from' 89

This  was a summer replacement variety show that aired in syndication in '89. The BB had just scored big with Kokomo so their profile was once again, fairly high. It featured then-recent BB concert performances, BB performances on the Universal Soundstage, musical and comedy guests (a then relatively unknown Ellen Degeneres was one such guest). But the highlight of each episode was the "campfire singalongs". The BB, most of their families, their sidemen, and others gathered around a capfire with acoustic guitars playing and singing a la the BB Party album. Pretty sweet stuff! This show was a brainchild of one of the Full House producers who had the good sense to hire Steve Binder to direct the thing. Binder was the guy who directed Elvis' 68 Comeback Special. Now that I think about it, the Campfire jams was probably Binder telling the BB, "I did this sitdown set for the Elvis special----I think it might make for interesting viewing". Alan Boyd included a short clip from this show in ENDLESS HARMONY (the clip of the guys playing "Surfin'")

This was a home video shot at a hotel on an early 90's BB tour. It had Brian, BJ, Jeff Foskett, and John Stamos all around a piano shooting the sh*t and playing tunes. Great fun to watch (even if the quality is crap).

Aside from the usual audio, video, books, and tour programs:

 - The two albums of Beach Boys songs as played by the Hollyridge Strings
 - All of the little die-cast BB cars from circa 1999
 - Framed Frank Holmes Smile litho
 - The Beach Boys Barbie (circa 1988), including the little flexi-disc record with a song by Brian
 - A reel-to-reel tape of Wild Honey
 - An 8-track of Beach Boys Love You, purchased by my dad in 1977 and played only once
 - Smile concert program, signed by everybody except Brian after one of the first Smile UK concerts (thanks, Dan Lega!)
 - An Orange Crate Art poster, signed by Van Dyke Parks
 - A mint Capitol 45 of "Caroline, No" signed by Brian (autograph obtained by me at Brian's M&G at Tower Records in NYC, 7/24/98)
 - And the center of the collection...a battered 8-track tape called Good Vibrations, released in 1971 on the Pickwick label.  Even though it doesn't seem like much, this collection of songs is what showed me that there is more to the Beach Boys than what is on Endless Summer.  I obtained this tape in 1982 when I was 10.

Then I have (or got for my friend) a "Kokomo" liscence plate signed by Mike, Bruce and the rest of the band from last year.
That's beyond perfect. Congrats.

Wow -- I used to have one of those kites.   They fell apart, and I don't know what happened to them.  Had forgotten all about it.  I do still have a 15 Big Ones Frisbee.

I haven't played the LP, but someone years ago (before I bought the LP) gave me a tape dub. I listened to it once and put it away.
Yes, Murry does Warmth of the Sun and Al wrote the instrumental "Italia".

Seems like Brad Elliott claimed a few years ago that Brian co-wrote one of the Murry tunes without credit on the LP.  It might have been "Heartbreak Lane."

Yes, I do remember Brad saying that and I was going to mention it myself in my post, but I couldn't and don't remember the song title.
