Title: The Shut Down board hacked
Post by: Charles LePage @ ComicList on December 24, 2005, 05:02:19 AM
I went to the board this morning and found one message left:

HACKED BY KOKUSHO

Good thing we started a new non phpbb board, eh?

Yeah, old Kushykoo left a charming little Christmas present for us all over in Shut Down land.  I'll deal with it after Christmas; there are more important things going on right now than that.

I'm sure there must be some way to undo the hack, though I fear all my flux messages are lost.   :-[

Tell Mikie he's welcome to join us here!

Someone must hate all these BB-related message boards. My money is on Male Ego being the next hack victim.

Hopefully, you can trace down the guy's IP address and report him to his ISP.

Very sad to see that. I think it's the equivalent to the idiot that tagged the bark of a tree down the street.  ???

But, life goes on - and I wish everyone here a most regal Christmas and blessed New Year.
No matter the rain, never forget that summer's always a-comin'.

When i go in via my FTP setup, i am unable to get into the board pages - they're "corrupt."  So i don't think i'll be able to recover anything.  But the board will rise again...it always has, it always will.

Charles, i'll let Mikie know he's welcome here!

Good Gravy.    :o

The problem I had with the old SS board, not being able to get to the administration panel, happened again.  Tis the season to hack!

PMcC back on the new site...What a drag that this activity takes place. It's criminal, I tell ya, and the guy should be prosecuted by a jury of 12 people from this board....

Good Luck in sorting it all out. Suze.

I remember the BBB Yellow Board havng problems with someone "pornolising" (if that's the correct way of saying it!) us, a couple of years back. Do you remember that?  I even had a phone call from Bruce, telling me to sort it out. pronto.

So I called AGD.

:D

Little things please little minds, I suppose...shame they haven't anything better to do with their time...which reminds me, I HAVE - and better get back to it, right away!

Title: Re: The Shut Down board hacked

Any idea whether the person hacks the board by posting something that messes the bulletin board code, or are they actually hacking directly into the website, which would be even more scary

On the brighter side, we always knew there had to be a Shut Down Volume 2....

Yes...as i said in my very first post about this to AGD on the Yellow Board on Christmas eve...
;-)

Look for a new board and location sometime this week; i've started the process.

I honestly haven't left it run long enough to hear the noise...just the start of what sounds like some middle eastern music.  See?  Something GOOD about dial-up!
;-)

It'll be gone soon, i promise...and you'll get your avatar back, David...

If you look close enough in those 0's and 1's, there's a picture of the Turkish flag.  Hence the Middle Eastern music?

The whole thing is very creepy, if you ask me.  Why do people do this stuff?   ???

Title: Re: The Shut Down board hacked

Google the phrase "Turkish hackers," and see what comes up.  Don't people in Turkey have anything better to do?  Apparently they're in competition with the Bulgarians to see who can hack the most pages.

Bill Bryson's description of Turkish pop music: "a man having a vasectomy without the benefit of anaesthetic to a background of frantic sitar playing".

Post by: Susan on December 28, 2005, 06:21:50 AM
My nephew is looking into stealing the board back - he is tracking this guy all over the place, as well as checking out how to hack php boards.  I guess he's [the hacker, i mean] not making much effort to hide himself or his on-line identity or activities.

Why do people do this?  One answer would be that they don't have any control or power in their own lives, and this is a way for them to feel control and power.

Another answer is that they're just assholes.

Maybe they're assholes who have no power or control in their own lives.

They should be playing outside like all bad little boys, playing God by burning ants with a magnifying glass.

This may be crazy, but I like the lay-out of this board a bit better. Sorry we had to lose so much material from the last board, though...We set sail again. Steady as she goes, straight ahead til morning.

While we're talking about Shut Down/Cabin Essence, I just wanted to let you all know that I'm trying a new chat on the site -it's php so I don't know what the hack risk is, but there is less to lose anyway on a chat. The previous script was working, but didn'tallow new people to register so I'm giving this a try..have a look at

or follow the links from the main page

Susan, have you and Chuck been to the PHPbb help forums? Apparently, there are worms out there that are designed to allow people to take control of your board if you are using an older version. That's most likely what happened to the Shut Down board. I'm not sure what happened to the other SS board, since it doesn't seem to have been overtly hacked or defaced, it's just running weird. There are instructions on the PHPbb forums on how to undo the worm problem. Start with this thread, if you haven't already: http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=348139

Also, see these: http://www.geeklog.net/article.php/phpbb-worm
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/perl.santy.html
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=phpbb+worm&btnG=Google+Search

Good luck, and sorry that this happened to you guys.

Hi Octave Doctor.  Yes, i've seen that...i don't think that's what happened to Shut Down.  There's a different message.  Regardless, i don't think any of the files are recoverable, so as soon as i've taken the email addresses i can get - my admin name was deleted, as was Andrew Gladwin's as moderator, so we can only see the ones that people decreed should be visible - as soon as i've got those, i'm deleting the files.

Dave - thanks for that!  Kinda sad when we have to say [and i agree with you!] that we *always* miss it when it's gone...!!!

Ed, i'm still working on it.  Unfortunately, i'm not the most technically savvy person out there, and i keep running into problems.  Charles is helping me some, but a lot of it is stuff that my host has to help me with .  The bastards were off yesterday, if you can believe THAT.  Hmph.  But it will happen...i haven't forgotten us!!
