Title: Books on the late 60's/70's L.A./Laurel Canyon scene..
Post by: roll plymouth rock on December 06, 2006, 01:17:02 PM
Hi everyone,

I was just wondering if people would be willing to recommend some books on the late 60's/70's L.A./Laurel Canyon Singer/Songwriter, Psychedelic music scene. Anything that pertains to this subject matter would be great to learn about. My object of study is Van Dyke Parks in particular, but I'd like to know about any LA books in particular so that I can provide proper historical context to discuss his work (I need additional references for an academic paper on him). Anyways, I know there must be some out there that I don't know about.

Thanks!

I just read "Hotel California" by Barney Hoskyns.  It covers the whole Laurel Canyon/Troubador  scene and does feature Van Dyke Parks.  Here's a link to the book on Amazon.com:

It was a fascinating read.

Here's another great book by Barney Hoskyns on the L.A. music scene, discusses Spector, Brian Wilson and Van Dyke Parks.

I second the Hoskyns book. An awesome read, expertly researched.
