Title: So uh, was there a copyright dump?
Post by: Rebel on January 03, 2023, 08:05:42 PM
Maybe I have missed it. I hope I did. Was there anything released? Any shady 1.5 minute dump of stuff like last year? Any… anything? Is this thing on? Hello?

Heard you loud and clear.  Nothing has been leaked to my knowledge...yet.  But us hardcore BB fans are a relentless crowd so you never know.

Other boards have said that this is it: https://www.youtube.com/@brirecords/videos

We've certainly come a long way from those outstanding live show releases from 1964-1968... I wonder what changed?

Were the 47 live songs from Passaic NJ in November 1972 part of the Copyright Dump?
I'm listening to them now (there is a link on YT) and they are great - obviously very similar to the Carnegie show on SoS as it was recorded a few days earlier.
Just can't make head nor tail of what they are as some songs are done 4 times, and yes there were 2 shows, but still.
Having searched many sources I can find hardly any mention of them.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Jon

It appeared on deezer.com, and then taken down swiftly.

Amazing! Thanks for sharing. I like the drum sound more on this compared to Carnegie Hall. Punchier.

So the original plan was to make a single LP live album using the Passaic and Carnegie Hall tapes but obviously that was scrapped and eventually a double album-composed mostly of concerts taped in the summer of 73 appeared.  However, “Wouldn’t It Be Nice”, “Let the Wind Blow”, “Marcella”, “Don’t Worry Baby” and “Good Vibrations" on the double album come from these shows.  I have never bothered to figure it out but if you compare with the double LP-maybe you can see which versions were used and whether they received "Sweetening" before the LP came out.

Nice find! I have that concert on cassette tape somewhere -- it's good to hear it again. I wonder if a nationally-broadcast show from 1980 qualifies as a copyright protection dump, tho.

Don't think this was a copyright dump. This concert was broadcast on radion and has been released a couple of times as a grey-area release (not official but alsonot a bootleg). Cool show btw, around the time of Knebworth though Dennis is not present.

Slightly off course but the Grateful Dead just dropped a bunch of outtakes in connection to their upcoming "Wake of the Flood" reissue.  I only wish BRI/Iconic would adopt a similar business practice and randomly drop a bunch of awesomeness on us just like it.  I mean they even get multiple box set releases every year regardless of "anniversaries".  No reason why our boys can't do the same, c'mon.  🙏😉

Again though, I’ve noted before that the Dead is a very different animal from the BBs. I am not a deadhead and have never really been interested in their music but I know that the Dead liked to play in a more jazz inspired manner and drag out songs with lots of improvisation. Thus a Deadhead may really be willing to shell out money for each live release to get the version of Dark Star with the twenty minute guitar duel or the 45 minute version of Truckin. But as Ron Altbach noted, the BBs were not an improvisational band-they were more like an orchestra in which every musician and singer has a part to play and there is little variation from night to night. Hence you may want a live concert from 1969 or 1973 but do you really need multiple shows from 1969 that are basically identical in length and set list? Some fans may have more desire than others of course.

I should be more specific in that I want more studio material over live stuff and the Grateful Dead has done just that with a release called "The Angel's Share".  That's what I crave the most.
