Title: "Ganz allein" - "In my Room" translation
Post by: Rocker on December 18, 2022, 02:33:17 AM
Well, I'm havenig a couple of minutes with nothing to do so I thought I would translate the german lyrics for "Ganz allein" into english so everyone has an idea what it sounds like, because it is not a word-for-word translation of the original. I'll try to keep the translation as close as possible to the original instead of trying to make it sound like a usable english lyric, though I have to say that the german lyrics are not totally constant throughout in their conjugation and I don't know yet how this will bear out in the translation; let's see. I won't try to make it rhyme, though.

I took the following transcription of the lyrics from this site: https://genius.com/The-beach-boys-ganz-allein-lyrics

"Ganz allein": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZ2Yo05j-NI

Es gibt ein [sic!] Ort, da geh' ich hin
Flüst're Freud und Leid
Ganz allein, ganz allein
Ganz allein

Schloss und Riegel schließen aus
Furcht und Sorgen hier
Ganz allein, ganz allein
Ganz allein

Träume hier, schmiede Pläne
Ohne Schlaf zu fleh'n
Durch mein Weinen und mein Seufzen
Lachend schau zurück

Dunkel ist's, ich bin allein
Doch fürchte ich mich nicht
Ganz allein, ganz allein
Ganz allein

Rough translation:

There is a place I go to,
whisper joy and pain,
All alone, all alone,
all alone.

Lock and bar shut out
fear and sorrows here,
All alone, all alone,
all alone.

Dreaming here, hatch out plans,
without pleading for sleep,
Through my crying and my sighing,
laughing looking back.

It's dark, I'm alone,
but I am not afraid,
all alone, all alone,
all alone

This is a cool idea, thanks for putting it together! My one suggestion would be that "shut out" (or even "lock out" as in the original) would be a better translation of ausschließen than eliminate, since it is not just metaphorical but also literally referring to the lock and bolt :)

Yes, that's a good suggestion, thank you! I didn't want to use 'lock out' because of the iteration. But 'shut out' didn't come to my mind. I will change that in the starting post.
