Title: Any perspective on the release of the CATP/Holland boxed set?
Post by: The Heartical Don on September 22, 2022, 04:33:33 AM
Dear fellow members -

IIRC not long before the 'Feel Flows'-set appeared, it was briefly mentioned by Universal that the 'Carl & The Passions/Holland' equivalent would be released this fall.

I just checked the 'future releases' list of my own record retailer, but this doesn't show anything for the upcoming months.

Has it been delayed? Will it probably be out just prior to the Christmas days?

Thanks in advance for any news on this.

Howie, can you narrow it down to a month? Has this box set been a ‘circular firing squad’ fiasco like the last?

Can you at least tell us some things to be excited about? Or songs/snippets you enjoyed?

So are we trying to bite the hand that feeds us? What circular firing squad? I was very happy with the last years set and I don’t see the need to stir up sh*t. But maybe I’m off base and if so I apologize. But let’s just not get snappy with a guy who has already given some neat info about this set.

News and images are starting to leak at the Hoffman forum and are trickling out to other message boards, so the announcement may be as soon as tomorrow. A live version of YNAMOHTSA is also rumored to start streaming tomorrow.

Sail on Sailor is certainly a fine enough title, but I would have liked a title that is lifted from the lyrics of a song like Sunshine Tomorrow.

The Beach Boys Through Restful Waters

The Beach Boys - Unsettled Oceans

The Beach Boys - Sunny California

The Beach Boys - Another Sunny Day

The Beach Boys - Scheming To Rule the Waves

The Beach Boys - Dusk Time

The Beach Boys - Golden Auras

(you hate them all don't you?  :lol)

"Sail on Sailor" as a title for a 72/73 deluxe box might be the biggest no-brainer title ever for an archival release. Hasn't been used as an album title (well, who knows what weird comps exist around the world, but it's not a mainstream album title anyway), is the most well-known song title from this era among the masses (and about the only BB song that ever had any traction on Classic Rock radio for whatever that's still worth), and I'd say it evokes the period quite well. It's poignant without being negative (no, folks, I seriously doubt they want to call a set "Unsettled Oceans" and advertise the acrimony first and foremost).

One of the best things about these sets is that, after a million years of everybody (casual fans and hardcore fans alike) often dwelling on the downer/negative stuff (and believe me, as a student/scholar of this band, all of that stuff *should also* be covered in the appropriate forums), these sets blow you away with the idea that above all else, they made jaw-dropping, stunning music all through this, including dozens and dozens of tracks they never released.

We should all be very, very excited.

Please calm down. Way way down. Circular firing squad was a term used by I thought Howie, or someone else in the know in regards to the delayed sunflower boxset. No one is biting any hands. Nor is anyone stirring anything up. It was merely a question if this box set went smoother than Feel Flows boxset. That’s it. That’s it.

Yes!!
As with Carl's "Heroes & Villains", I believe the live version's arrangement had more hit potential. The studio recording has something missing imo.

Bring this set on! Thanks Howie, Mark, Alan and Beach Boys!

EDIT:

There was a single mix for "Beaks of the Eagles"? Interesting to say the least.

I still hope krabklaw will make a video for "The Trader"  :)
I wonder though if someone will do a fan video with the new material and the different promo videos we have of "You need a Mess of Help".

Two disc’s of Carnegie Hall. That’s worth the price alone.

Speaking of which, $66 for 6 discs is great value. I don’t recall the FF set being close to that.

Keep in mind that that website that first showed the stuff was from, I believe, Malaysia. So those prices were converted to USD, and various international retailers can have sometimes weirdly wildly varying prices. I would imagine the eventual price from US retailers will not be precisely that. We should find out shortly.

It's pretty miraculous we're getting these deluxe sets as physical sets, and specifically on CD (and not just the vinyl). If having a softcover makes this a bit easier to justify as a release (and also if it means a more sympathetic price tag), I'm all for it.

Title: Re: Any perspective on the release of the CATP/Holland boxed set?
Post by: HeyJude on September 27, 2022, 09:26:02 AM
Just to reiterate, because the sets are up on the official websites but maybe not Amazon yet, that that $66 USD converted Malaysian price for the 6-CD is not accurate. It appears the list price is $149.98. The prices are on that Malaysian website were/are all over the place, some more similar/accurate than others.

The various iterations are here:

https://shop.thebeachboys.com/collections/sail-on-sailor

As usual, I would expect other retailers including Amazon might have a lower (and likely continually fluctuating) price.

It's also worth noting, especially for newer fans, that for most of the 90s, you couldn't even get these albums AT ALL, as far as buying a new copy. The Caribou CDs went out of print very quickly, and it wasn't until 2000 that one could even buy CD versions again.

Then we got years of unreleased stuff trickling out, sometimes having to piggyback onto some other concept. The people putting all those releases together did everything they could, but it used to be all they could do to sneak a few early 70s tracks onto the "Hawthorne, CA" set.

The label situation, the BRI situation, the individual members' view of this stuff, and the team in place working on this, have all evolved. It's pretty remarkable.

And now we're getting "Pet Sounds Sessions" level attention to the 1969-1973 material. Mind-blowing. I'm all for analyzing all of this stuff. But a quick perspective check is good specifically when it comes to this, the idea of multi-disc collections of unreleased 70s material.

Interested if any ok had to be given by Jagger/ Richards over the inclusion of Jumpin Jack Flash ‘Live’?

Given the amount of live covers the Stones have done over their time, is the process complicated?

Thanks

In terms of audio releases, as long as proper royalties are paid (which of course the label handles) and the song has already been published/copyrighted, no clearances or permissions are needed. Audio releases like this just pay a flat royalty. Where it gets complicated is the rights to put a song into any sort of video/film. There, permission needs to be sought and the owner of the song can ask for any amount they want. A million dollars per second if they want.

So if they had a video/film of the BBs doing the song, then that would become immensely more expensive. Though, in that case they'd only have to pay for the composition, whereas movies that want to use the song *and* the original Stones recording would have two levels of negotiation/payment involved.

This explains why "tribute" albums are plentiful, but putting songs (and even more so original recordings) into movies and TV becomes much more involved. There are more Beatles (or whomever) tribute/covers albums then there are movies and TV shows with Beatles songs in them.

This is why a Beach Boys documentary or concert video/film can also become a costly proposition; the BBs and their various entities own some of the recordings and some of the publishing, but not all. This is one of the reasons something like that "Live at Knebworth 1980" DVD or the 50th Anniversary Tour "Live in Concert" Blu-ray only have partial setlists.

Ditto. I remember the store down the street having The Beach Boys in Concert, but the cover was all beat up, and they wanted like $15 for it. Eventually a copy came in at another store, $6, and in VG+ condition.
My copy of Holland had the EP, but no sleeve for it. I think I paid $3 for the album.
Found Surf's Up in a cutout bin around the same time. That record must have been stuck in the back of a warehouse for 20 years!

Thanks HeyJude. Unlikely to see JJF in any Box Set video promotion then. 😉

Gosh, if they actually turned up a pro-shot show from the era with that song, they certainly could try to muster the resources to get all the needed clearances. I'm not up to date on what Stones songs tend to cost to license for film and TV. It *could* be done.
