Title: SiriusXM Beach Boys Channel Re-Starts 7/1/22
Post by: HeyJude on July 01, 2022, 06:50:45 AM
I know there's an old pinned thread about the SiriusXM channel launch a few years ago, but I think some folks might miss stuff in old pinned threads, so I thought I'd start a new thread so everyone knows the SiriusXM channel is back up starting today, July 1, 2022.

I dipped in this morning out of curiosity and it seems to be the same deal so far as previous years as far as track selection and interspersed interview blurbs. This morning I heard stuff including All Summer Long, Don't Worry Baby, Cool Cool Water, Tell Me Why ("Unplugged" version), the 2012 live version of "The Little Girl I Once Knew", etc.

Some more tracks I've heard this morning in the last hour or so:

What You Do To Me
Do It Again (Standard Version, but with "Stack o Tracks" album art)
Don't Back Down (Alternate, from "Keep an Eye on Summer")
You Still Believe In Me (Mono)
Sail on Sailor
Still Surfin'
All Summer Long
California Energy Blues
Good Vibrations ("45 Version", from the GV box)
Long Tall Texan (Concert '64)
Bluebirds Over the Mountain
Heroes and Villains (Philharmonic Version, with incorrect "Smile" cover art)
Tears in the Morning
Darlin'
The Surfer Moon (ah, this is one they inexplicably played seemingly every hour last time)
Wouldn't It Be Nice
Night Bloomin' Jasmine
The Warmth of the Sun

So yeah, not surprisingly, they appear to have just flipped the switch back on for the exact same algorithm used in the past, down to the same incorrect cover art, the same specific tracks getting played exponentially more than others, etc.

I've only heard a few of the interstitial interview bits, but I'm guessing they're probably old too.

Ha, The Surfer Moon.
Guess it depends on when one listened to it. Seems like they played Susie Cincinnati practically every hour with me.  ;D

In a 5 hour span, I heard Surfer Girl 3 times, Breakaway twice, and  Marcella 3 times. The Beach Boys channel is a great concept, but it could have been so much better than this. Oh well, I'm still listening.

It's the same as 2018 and 2021. While they seem to work from a pool of most of the BB catalog, including most solo stuff and even some "grey market" live releases, they seem to have a core of songs that get rotated much, much more often, occasionally interspersed with truly random weird deep cuts.

Emphasizing the well-known stuff makes sense. But then they'll run some random b-list track into the ground. Like "The Surfer Moon." Or "Summer in Paradise" tracks.

It's like having the entire BB catalog including multiple hit comps, in an IPod and then hitting shuffle....and then every hour going back to the start and re-shuffling again so you end up hearing "California Girls" 34 times per day.

But as I've said in the past, it's a bit of occasional fun as a free trial.

It'll be a bit different this year from what I hear.  Also, here's some more details:  https://blog.siriusxm.com/good-vibrations/ (https://blog.siriusxm.com/good-vibrations/)

All of the special events/playlists mentioned in that article will be pretty indistinguishable from the regular rotation.  If anything, those special playlists will be heavier on the hits.

They should let Howie Edelson and Alan Boyd host some slots or something.

I can't shake being completely needlessly a tiny bit fascinated with how the tracks are spit out via whatever algorithm-type method they use. I've been dipping in and out for days, and I've heard "She's Mine" off Carl's "Youngblood" like four times, "Givin' You Up" at least three times, and *nothing* else from that album.

The channel probably seems somewhat less repetitive if one listens to one or two straight hours as opposed to dipping in like ten times for ten minutes each time.

Overall, it still seems pretty much the same as past years. Perhaps a bit more heavy on the core songs, since the first weekend they've been doing 3-song "Sounds of Summer" sets each hour.

The album cover art is perhaps a bigger mess than previous years. Sometimes when they pull a track from a compilation, you get the correct compilation cover art. Sometimes you get the wrong compilation cover art (e.g. the 2003 "Sounds of Summer" cover when they're playing a 2021 mix), and sometimes they pull a track from a compilation or live album and use the cover art from whatever original studio album the song comes from. So you get like a 2012 live track with a 60s cover (while other times they do actually use the live album cover). You might get "Break Away" with 20/20 cover art, or a Japanese import CD copy of "20/20", or the "Spirit of America" cover.

I've heard several "Celebration" songs, which are of course some of the only tracks on the station to never have appeared officially on CD. I've heard "She's Just Out To Get You", "Cruisin'", and "Almost Summer."

They just played the slightly alternate single mix of "In My Car."

There is a single mix of “In My Car”? Where’s that available?

I can't remember if it's a promo single mix or what. I first heard it on the 90s "Sweet Insanity" disc, probably the most popular one doing the rounds back then. It's pristine, so I don't think it's completely unreleased. Also, if SiriusXM is playing it, it must come from some kind of promo single or single b-side or maxi-single or something.

The most obvious mix differences are in the little bits that bridge the chorus and verse.

I think this is it even though it shows the "Still Cruisin'" album art: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fouoOnFe4Xg

It seems most if not all versions I can find on YouTube (there are only a few) sound like this. I'm wondering if these are sourced from a later digital download (the album was available years ago as a download).

In any event, the mix is different from my original 1989 CD and cassette copies of the "Still Cruisin'" album.

I’m enjoying The Beach Boys singles show with Mike and Bruce . I have to tune Mike out because he’s always  saying every song was his idea in some way , but it’s nice to hear all the songs .

HeyJude, the YT clip sounds identical to my ‘89 CD. Little bridging bits and all.

I’m always curious about alternate mixes if they’re around, though!

Yeah, this is a weird mystery to me. I'll try to finagle sound samples to compare at some point. It's like the most mundane of minutia, I know.

Normally I'd say maybe I have some weird variant, but I remember back in 1989 playing the cassette a bunch, and then at some point later on, probably near the end of when the thing was still in print on CD probably in the late mid-late 90s, I bought a new copy of the album on CD, and the mix is the same across those two "pressings" I have.

Then at some point I heard one of those "Sweet Insanity" discs which had the track as an unlisted bonus track, and the mix was slightly different as I previously described. Really only mainly those bridging bits sound different, but it's definitely a different mix. I assumed at first it was an unreleased mix, or some sort of promo or advance copy they had duped or something.

But then I heard that same "alternate" (to me) mix on the SiriusXM station, and then found that seemingly every version I could find on YouTube (which are sourced from who knows where) sounds like this as well. If I didn't still have own my old pressings, I'd chalk it up to weird faulty sonic memory. But I'm able to sit here and A/B my CD versus all those versions on YouTube (and the version on that "Sweet Insanity" disc), and they're different!

Also, I lost track of how long this channel was running, and they ended it yesterday as planned it seems. No extension apparently.

Very disappointed the Channel didn't last through the next box set coming this Fall.

I think the main idea was that it was a summer deal as it has been in past years, and also promoted the "Sounds of Summer" reissue.

I can't deny that even with my sort of illogical fascination with the channel from time to time, even I lost interest to the point that I had forgotten when it was going to end. As in the past, they didn't do much in the way of special programming. They had "She & Him" host a little show with their Top 5, they had some other guy play the A and B sides of 60s singles with some blurbs from Mike and Bruce, and they did the fan-voted Top 60. Which is to say, none of this sounded much different from the normal rotation of songs, save the hosts talking.

That being said, it's kind of sad that they shut the channel off and replaced it with nothing. At least, last I checked, the channel has no programming and just loops SiriusXM promos. Would it have hurt to keep the BB channel going until the next thing takes its place?

But I suspect better and much more exciting things are coming with the 72/73 set, etc.

Yup, it's playing promo loops for Sirius channels and was still identified as the BB channel as of noon ET today.

It was pretty much a very lazy effort. Other channels, like E street and the Beatles, take much greater care with content. But the Beach Boys channels almost takes the same auto pilot approach that the band took in the 90s. Sad,

It makes sense unfortunately that if it's a limited run channel (two months, actually a shade less), there aren't going to be as many resources put into it.

I've mentioned this in the past, but from some folks I talked to back in 2018 when they first did the channel, there were ideas/proposals for more substantive programming for the channel, things that I think would have been more interesting to folks like us, and those ideas were of course not taken into consideration. At least back then (though I'd guess now as well), I think one issue was that SiriusXM wanted to use mostly "in house" talent in terms of hosting programming and things of that nature.

It seemed like they started going a little weirder and deeper near the end?

Yes I’ve never understood the timing of this station
Since The Beach Boys are considered to be a “fun and sun” group, I’d think that the station would stay on through Labor Day (US holiday, first Monday of September, generally considered to be the end of the Summer season).

I don't know why they couldn't just keep it going, but honestly the novelty wore off and the programming could be a bit dodgy at times. Chalk it up to laziness or lack of care?

Last week I heard Surfer Girl played 3 x in a 4 hour span. Love that song, but just shows the laziness aspect of the channel if nothing else to monitor the songs played.
