Title: Beach Boys lineup in Cleveland - June 1, 1991
Post by: Gettin Hungry on September 28, 2021, 09:25:33 AM
Hi all, my first time seeing the Beach Boys was 30 years ago at Cleveland Municipal Stadium after an Indians baseball game (June 1, 1991). I was about to turn 12. I've always wondered what the lineup for this concert was. I know Carl, Mike, Bruce and Al were there. I assume Brian wasn't there, but I was trying to confirm that.

From what I've been able to find, the backing band would have included:
-Adrian Baker
-Richie Cannata
-Ed Carter
-Billy Hinche
-Matt Jardine
-Mike Kowalski
-Mike Meros

Did I miss anyone?

According to SetList.fm, they played the following:
-California Girls
-You're So Good to Me
-Then I Kissed Her
-Please Let Me Wonder
-Be True to Your School
-Don't Worry Baby
-Dancing in the Street
-Dance, Dance, Dance
-Do You Wanna Dance?
-Rock and Roll Music
-Surfer Girl
-Still Cruisin'
-Little Deuce Coupe
-409
-The Little Old Lady From Pasadena
-Shut Down
-G.T.O.
-I Get Around
-In My Room
-God Only Knows
-Sloop John B
-Wouldn't It Be Nice
-Good Vibrations
-Kokomo
-Help Me, Rhonda
-Barbara Ann
-Fun, Fun, Fun

Encore:
-Wipe Out
-Surfin' Safari
-Surf City
-Surfin' U.S.A.

Thank you for any input!

I don’t recall seeing Richie Cannata with them before 1993.

According to Wikepedia, Richie supposedly was with the Beach Boys starting in 1991.  Not sure if he was at the Cleveland show

Probably played Do It Again somewhere near the opening

Richie Cannata was part of the band for this 1992 publicity photo (which was probably taken in late 1991 or early 1992):

This photo is from July 28, 1991, and they have a sax player, but it's not Richie Cannata:

FWIW. Richie Cannata talks about his first gig being the NY State Fair but unsure of the year, although it sounds like it was a last minute call-up from Carl. In 1991 the BBs Fair gig was August 23.

That backing band pic is amazing. What would have been the purpose of doing a professionally shot photo of the backing band at this point in time? Were they being contracted to do one-off shows for non-BBs type scenarios?

Side note: Matt Jardine's mullet and near shirtless look make him look just like the sax player from The Lost Boys in this pic.

My god, look at that setlist of 31 songs:

2 songs from 1962
6 songs from 1963
4 songs from 1964
7 songs from 1965
4 songs from 1966

followed by a massive decades long jump to Kokomo and Still Cruisin'. With the period between 1967-1987 represented solely by their cover of Rock & Roll Music!

the remaining tracks are covers of songs mostly associated with other artists
(Dancing in the Street, Little Old Lady From Pasadena, G.T.O, Surf City* and Wipe Out)

*A Brian penned number, but still!*

Hard to believe Carl didn't do either "Darlin'" or "I Can Hear Music". But he did sing the lead on their cover of "Dancin' In The Street".

Thanks for all the responses. If it wasn't Richie Cannata, then does anyone know who would it have been?

As for some of the songs some have mentioned that aren't on the list, I wish I had a better memory to say for sure if the Setlist post is accurate. It does seem odd that "Do It Again" and "Darlin'" aren't on there.

And just to confirm my assumption, Brian would not have been there, correct? I always assumed not, but then I was thinking it would have been their 30th anniversary, so maybe there's a chance he was! (Probably not)

As far as I know, Brian didn't appear on stage performing with the band after 1990 until 1995. No appearances on stage performing with them in 1991/92/93/94 as far as I know.

As for the setlist, those post-game shows were never on the longer side; they probably often had to shorten the setlist, especially if the games ran long.

Went through one of the old touring band lineup threads, and the sax player for the first half or so of 1991, including in the pic above, appears to be John Renner.

It appears he passed away a few years ago, 2017, according to online obituaries.

He *may* have written whatever this is, which may or not be some sort of memoir touring with the Beach Boys (or a fictionalized account, or a stream of consciousness thing); I honestly can't make heads of tails of what it is or the provenance of it based on the samples:

Here's a bit from it from a blog, where buried in there you can sort of extract a bit of content regarding his touring with the Beach Boys:

Good catch. He tended to rotate the 2 from year to year in the 90's (along with either his all black or all white stage uniform). 91 was a Darlin' year

Nice work digging that up!

Just from reading what's at those links, it would appear he didn't have fond memories of touring with Mike Love. Before reading the book or memoir, would that be an accurate guess? Seems to be a pretty common thread...other former touring musicians I've heard have a less than positive view too, but they tend to keep it mostly under wraps in interviews.

Re: The photo of the July 28 '91 show, it's hilarious how it shows Bruce adjusting the mic stand. Some things never change I guess.

Wow, the guy’s not pulling any punches. Shocked at his candor. Not surprised by his anecdotes, but still shocked he apparently didn’t sign the same NDA all of the others did

I agree, it's putting it right out there on the table so to speak. Again, not an uncommon sentiment among various touring musicians in the BB's universe (including those who Mike fired) but they don't express it as publicly.

It would depend on the duration of the non-disclosure agreement, if there was one in a contract he signed. If it were 5 or 10 years, the guy would be in the clear to say whatever he wants in 2012, and if he didn't care about working with Mike as a musician again, he could say anything.

From what I've heard, many but not all touring musicians have ended up signing NDAs.

It seems like this Renner guy wasn't in the band that long, and may have been hired in early 1991 knowing he was kind of a temp. If that was the case, maybe back then they weren't having every temp player sign an NDA like immediately.

Hard to say; this was the first time since the Charles Lloyd days that they had a sax player.

They had the horn sections in the latter half of the 70s, and then Charles Lloyd on sax, etc. through 1978. Then, as far as I can tell, they never had a regular sax or other horn/woodwind player touring for the entirety of the 1980s.

It seems they decided in 1991 to add a sax player. I don't know if they intended Renner to be *the* guy, or he if they knew it was a temporary thing.

Haven't read through the entire thread, but fwiw pretty sure Richie was with the boys for the first concert tour when I saw them (I was about 15) - Summer in Paradise Australian tour Nov 1992. I could check because I actually got a hold of airline manifests showing their movements around the country - I don't recall which airline right now - plus I almost forgot but I also took about 50 very bad photos that day including whole stage shots.
