Title: Rest in Peace, Don Everly
Post by: Sound of Free on August 21, 2021, 11:52:56 PM
Sad news. Don Everly has died at 84.

Pretty much every harmony group that followed owes them a huge debt. Brian raved about them, and on the Party album Mike told Brian that you shouldn't fool around with an Everly Brothers song.

Hopefully he and Phil are making more heavenly harmonies.

Oh man, this is sad. Rest in peace, Don!

The Everlys were always known for their harmonies of course. What gets overlooked though is what a fantastic in his own singer Don was and just what a great voice he had (and for that matter Phil as well). The man had soul!

When Phil died I posted a link to this demo of "It's all over" sung by Don alone with his guitar. Just listen:

Very sad to see this.  The all-time harmony pioneers in pop/rock/country.  Brian must be sad too.

All I have to do is Dream was my fave record, it reminds me of my late parents who were around in the 50s when the boys made their first record. ( if I have got the maths right)

A legend who went on to influence so many, including The Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel.... and of course, The Beach Boys. Songs like Bye Bye Love and Love Hurts still make for great listens. Hard to think of many other musical giants from the 50s that are still around, besides Jerry Lee Lewis and Sonny Rollins. R.I.P.

Some of the best of the best - Cathy’s Clown, Crying in the Rain, Walk Right Back

But some lesser-known (and several almost unknown) gems - Bowling Green, Devoted to You, Empty Boxes, Gone Gone Gone, I’m on My Way Home Again, Illinois, Lord of the Manor, Love Hurts, Mama Tried, Poor Jenny, Problems, Stories We Could Tell, On the Wings of a Nightengale, Take a Message to Mary, Ventura Boulevard, Walk Right Back, and Watcohing It Go.

Do yourself a favor and give a listen.  Thanks Phil and Don for countless hours of joy.  RIP…

Another favorite of mine is "Always drive a Cadillac" from their second phase. Great song with a great story.

That entire album - Born Yesterday - is a great listen. It was great to see them come back as contemporary artists, not just an oldies act.

RIP Don Everly from The Everly Brothers & Charlie Watts from The Rolling Stones

Normans Rare Guitars
We lost two tremendous musical icons, the great Charlie Watts from The Rolling Stones and Don Everly from the greatest vocal duo of all time The Everly Brothers. In honor of these loses, Norm, Lemmo and Nick do their own rendition of “All I Have To Do Is Dream”. Rest In Peace and we're sending our love to all their families!

Hey Doll Baby is a newly remastered 17-track compilation that collects some of the lesser-known, buried treasures in the Everly Brothers’ rich catalog with songs assembled by Adria Petty, Tom Petty’s daughter, who worked closely with both Everly families on the project, with help from Phil’s widow Patti and son Jason, who provided track-by-track commentary for the liner notes, as well as Don Everly, prior to his passing last summer, and his widow Adela. Hey Doll Baby holds the bittersweet distinction of being the final project Don worked on.
