Title: Comprehensive SMiLE list?
Post by: onkster on May 26, 2021, 12:26:39 PM
Hey all-
Hope this isn't already a dead-horse topic, but...I've been listening to the Sail On podcast a lot lately (if you haven't heard it yet, do it--it's wonderful!), and wondered if anybody here has compiled a comprehensive list of all SMiLE material, noting the best sources, etc.

This would theoretically include:
- the Durrie Parks acetate bits from "Sail On"
- all legit releases, including BWPS and its offshoots
- all the boots, including both Get the Boots, Psycodelic Sounds, and Big Bag of Vegetables
- anything unbooted that is known to be in private hands at present
- anything in the vaults known to exist, but not released or booted

Might be interesting to have a second list of material known to have existed but has since been lost; rumored recordings

Mainly, I'm interested in knowing whether I have everything yet or not. For example, I recall reading there were things on "Big Bag of Vegetables" that weren't on anything else--I don't know what they were, and I never saw that boot pop up anywhere. And the Parks acetate bits made me wonder if there have been any other stray items turn up that I missed.

Sorry if this has been covered before, and thanks in advance if anyone has a list like this to share!

What Durrie Parks acetate bits?

How on earth did I miss this?

Does it include the tantalisingly described Heroes assembly which we hear partly on the CIFOTM track on the Friends sessions? I would consider selling a kidney to hear that!

I'm partway through the second Smile podcast. If someone can direct me to the section that deals with the acetates then I would be most grateful.

This topic might be a good start. It lists al the available takes and mixes Smile-related, along with where to find them. I found it very handy at times when I was completely lost among all the various boots/mixes/tracks that sound very different but might be the same mix but from a different source etc...

The list does not contain a break-down off all the different takes used in the Smile Sessions disc 2-5. Which would be very hard to do actually, because it's a mix of all sorts of takes, count-ins, studio chatter, etc. (see, for example, http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php/topic,22772.msg540475.html#msg540475)

As far as the boots go, I don't think there are that many that one should have to have a 'complete' collection of all the best sources. Many have overlapping material as well, just from a different origin. I don't know if it's allowed to go in to this subject much more though..

Last point: I found some recent fan created boots very handy, if not essential, for their authentic presentation of some specific tracks. I've been trying to create as many 'authentic' / 'not-tinkered-with' versions of all the Smile tracks, combining TSS, the sessions material, and a lot of the bootlegs. For me, that is the most valuable Smile material (musically and historically) but this kind of 'authenticity-OCD' isn't everyone's cup of tea.

If I remember correctly it's actually the same bit as the Friends Sessions IIGS snippet, which they use in a home made reconstruction of the complete acetate.

Ah, I've heard that reconstruction. I'll weep a bit now. Everyone's different, but if I'd bought those disks I would have considered it my duty to share them with the world.

Don't know if there'll be such a list, as we haven't seen one since 2011 - it takes a lot of research, and probably the folks who did this don't want to bother with publishing, because the amount of effort is huge and the reward is not ( and of course, people would be glad to buy such a book). Anyway, I'll start the ball rolling. Here's my interpretation of the session tapes sequence for "Good Vibrations", based on what's available. Does not include the mixes prepared from these tapes by anybody, as it's another can of worms - only the material recorded during the sessions and what we have of the masters made.

With thanks to the creators of "SMiLE Inventory" and the documentation on TSS. Both SOT UM Vol. 15 and TSS present the (cut) tapes in chronological order, with just slight deviations, so it's possible to create something like this sequence. However, this is not an easy task, and the placement of certain bits of studio talk and noises can be interpreted in different ways, because available tapes are cut. That's why I said it's my interpretation of the session tapes sequence.

All sessions are demarcated by the longer dashed lines. Short dashed lines demarcate "tracks" which are based in general on SOT UM Vol. 15, but in some cases not. "Overdub variation" means one cannot be sure that the complete overdub is presented on the known tapes, and different mixes are available - the idea is to present the undubbed master and the overdubbed (to whatever degree is possible) master. Take numbers are based on what's called on the session tapes. Many takes are false starts, or even worse, are cut on tapes. This sequence is a draft as I'd like to fine-tune certain things, otherwise I'd give the playing time.
