Title: Rare Pet Sounds Era Footage Discovered!
Post by: DSalter on February 08, 2021, 07:27:23 PM
Darian just posted this on the Sail On Facebook page:

"Heads up! This unbelievable film footage was only unearthed late last year (blew my mind). Wasn't sure how it was going to be unveiled but they're going with the 55th anniversary of the photo shoot, which is this Wednesday (but premiering Tuesday 11pm)."

Holy smokes that is amazing. This stuff gives me hope for more footage from the Inside Pop filming to turn up. Absolutely mindblowing to think about what is just sitting around in a vault just waiting to be discovered.

BTW, for some background on why ML is laughing about "letting bygones be bygones"....what they mean about the group "never being welcomed back" to the S.D. Zoo...

Great find! Let's wait what will come up.
I always wondered why there seems to be so little footage of the Boys, since they where the biggest american music act at that time. You'd expected to see more. And then every once in a while something like this, the Ida Blackburn footage and the GV sessions film. turns up. Someone should search through all the archives of local TV stations etc.

Here's more of the story from KRLA's "Beat" paper, April 1966. One of their contributors traveled with the group and entourage and this was her report, note that there are no mentions of getting banned but some info on how they got caught in a torrential downpour and missed their first plane. Also it's interesting to read how the band's arrival must have been advertised somehow because a large group of fans was waiting for them at the zoo. Would the zoo have promoted a band showing up for a photoshoot to draw people, then ban that same group? Odd.

It'll be interesting to see how much footage they have, and how much they'll show...

They found the footage and announced it back in October, and even published this story about it:

https://www.cbs8.com/video/news/local/zevely-zone/mike-love-sings-this-too-shall-pass/509-963ff8ea-6236-41a1-8128-9f266f0246af (https://www.cbs8.com/video/news/local/zevely-zone/mike-love-sings-this-too-shall-pass/509-963ff8ea-6236-41a1-8128-9f266f0246af)

But as you can see the headline at the link "News 8 digs up forgotten footage of Beach Boys of infamous day at San Diego Zoo" from October 21 has been replaced by an interview video of Mike talking about a 1981 BB's concert at the old Jack Murphy stadium, and the link header even changed. So that original story flew under the radar and it looks like the station is holding it until the 55th anniversary as noted above.

What I would give for a 5 part Netflix style beach boys doc...

Just dig through the archives and get all the footage. I know Led Zeppelin have one in the making at the moment. The Eagles one was great

Wasn't there a new Beach Boys documentary on the horizon? Not the one about Brian ("Long Promised Road") but one about the group. If so, I really hope they use much of this kind of footage (of course as far as they have it). If used correctly, that is put into context of the documentary, it would be awesome.
Just look at some of the rare stuff that is on youtube:

Beach Boys (With Glen Campbell) Interview by Jim McKenna, CFCF Montreal
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9KWXFqTgXf0

Ida B Blackburn Beach Boys Interview 1964.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oBvGQimYphQ

The Beach Boys In Paris (1964)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mHU4T4RQDlM

Plus of course the GV sessions, the Pet Sounds photo shoot and various TV reports and films of live performances. Given their big success, there has to be more in the archives. Not all is worth being used, but there's definitely stuff out there that is too good not to.

EDIT:

BTW the same TV station put out this '81 clip of the Boys in concert about two years ago:

There has been no plan on a "Beach Boys" doc as far as I've heard, at least any sort of career-spanning doc. There's the Brian doc that's been finished for awhile that just needs distribution.

The Beach Boys should have already been working on a deal to do a long-form documentary, "Beatles Anthology" style. Streaming services are the *perfect* venue for something like that. They probably couldn't get someone to sing up for 8 75-minute episodes for 10 hours total like the "Beatles Anthology." But I think a six-part or so "Limited Series" on Netflix or HBO Max or something would be perfect.

Make no mistake, there are a million roadblocks. Getting the BBs to do *in depth* interviews for the whole thing, and to agree to work as a production partner, would be difficult. Most difficult would be getting a network or streaming service to pay for the rights to use the footage and the rights to use the music. That would get expensive fast, though some of that could be mitigated on material from the later years, since BRI owns some of that and the band or various members do own some of their own publishing for latter-era stuff.

Most importantly, they need to do this *SOON*, while the remaining members can do interviews.

Watched the report live on CBS 8 (San Diego) and the archival footage is up on their youtube page
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DCM3i-nykp0

Truly surreal to see these iconic images in motion...

Edit... the news segment actually ran for several minutes with the Mike Love interview, comments from an old-time zoo employee, comments from a music critic about the influence of Pet Sounds etc.    Hopefully they'll upload the whole thing at some point.

Unfortunately I can't access the other link. Probably because I'm in Germany. Hopefully someone will upload it to youtube.

Ok, damnit. I thought I heard something about it.
But I'm hoping there will be a definite one with lots of footage and covering all the things that happened in the BBs world. Endless Harmony was great of course, but didn't go deep into the Blondie/Ricky years. Also it didn't mention the Manson connection. Not that that's a great part of the Boys' carreer, but it should be mentioned because it had it's influence on Dennis especially.

Hello All.

New poster here, but I have been reading the board for some time. It seemed like an exciting time to start posting, what with the boxed set coming and this footage being discovered. It gives me hope for other things turning up, such as the Inside Pop footage. If there were a Lost Ark of Beach Boys' stuff, that footage would definitely be in there!

I was very excited by this footage though, as funnily enough I have been building a virtual version of the petting zoo circa 1966 for a VR project I'm working on. Having studied all the vintage media, there was nothing showing the two fences that would have been front and right of the boys. I now get some brief glimpses, albeit black and white.

One burning question I had after seeing Marilyn in the footage (it is Marilyn isn't it?), is where did her long hair go?

Best wishes GP, I'm excited to be here, Feel Flows!!!

Welcome!
And, yes, what happened to that girl we used to know?  It is, of course, Marilyn indeed.  Some other here may be more knowledgable on this, but I'm not sure I've ever seen other photos of her sporting that short blond 'do.  In the famous LAX airport photo 8 months later, she's back to being a brunette and the hair has grown out by, well, about 8 months' worth of growth.  :afro

Well, there's this one, possibly from the same day, judging from their clothes:

So one of the band "bounced a carrot off a tiger's nose" -- who's placing their bet on Denny?

Well if Dennis did bring a big brown bag of them from home, and the tiger was jumping up and down, of course who wouldn’t toss a carrot. But did the tiger then chow down on the vegetable?  ;)

Perhaps 'bouncing a carrot off a tiger's nose' is a euphemism?

Possibly bowel related?
