Title: Wondermints with Brian in the early 2000s
Post by: twentytwenty on July 22, 2020, 03:27:13 AM
I've been listening to some bootlegs from the early days with the Wondermints. Especially this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xn7kNLDzK3M (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xn7kNLDzK3M) from 2001.

And dammit where they on fire those days, Brian's on point, the band is enthusiastic to the point I'm just listening with a bigger smile as the concert goes on. Just, so good

It's amazing to think about how incredible the ride must have been for the Wondermints - to go from huge Beach Boys fans to becoming the backing band for Brian Wilson, then being praised by Paul McCartney, and then to backing The Beach Boys reunion tour. What an absolute dream come true. I'd be pinching myself daily seeing if it was all just a dream.

Thanks for sharing those videos - Brian is really into that 'Darlin' recording!

I really miss this group lineup. In my opinion their peak was 1999-2004-ish.

Yeah I definitely agree. The band sounded enthusiastic and it was before they started to play all the songs so damn slow. I would stretch the era to 2005 though. That live att Glastonbury (or was it reading?, don't remember now) is amazing as well!

Glastonbury. I was there :)

They uploaded that performance in kinda HD onto the iPlayer last month.

I remembered thinking Brian looked quite out of it then, that'd be classed as a 10/10 performance today

The band was on fire that gig, but Brian had already started to decline if you put it against the gig I posted in the thread start. But it is a great gig, I often put it on in the background on YouTube

It's kind of amazing what we've come to accept from Brian over the years, which I think started in 1976. I mean his singing on Darlin' is flat and out of tune, but we love him so we forgive.
