Title: Listing Songs With Music Bits Of Different Songs
Post by: RangeRoverA1 on September 14, 2019, 04:19:26 PM
As it's distinguished in thread title, *lyrical* bits of different songs discount, ditto band/ bandmate(-s)/ singer/ song/ album *namedrops* (aka song A namedrops Beach Boys, song B - Carl, song C - Sunflower, song D - Ricky Nelson). Do not bring mash-ups either, a la Stars On 45 & Weird Al Yankovic's polkas & parodies.

To start:

Kirsty MacColl "He Thinks I Still Care" (Rip Chords' George Jones cover who deviated the melody (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Sj6e97BG-fU)) - guitar plays "Blue Moon" at 1:41 https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=TQKgaPqvAig
Jan & Dean "Heart & Soul" - Dean sings "Blue Moon" *melody* with falsetto at 0.23 https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=-QcA31z9Cmg

Folks?

One example is in Emerson Lake and Palmer's take on "Hoedown." At the 2 :18 or so mark, they play a bit of "Shortnin Bread."

Cool topic, RR. I thought of two BB-related examples today. One is "Getcha Back"...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7c3OvUiyD8c

...whose opening falsetto line is a slowed-up version of the opening line of "Alone" by The Shepherd Sisters:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kna-t50vGic

That may have been an unconscious crib. The other is more obvious--it's "Look (I Ran")...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3AxYYIN9scw

...which inserts (here at 1:44) the intro from "Twelfth Street Rag":

Here's one more Beach Boys-related example.

Frank Zappa quoted all sorts of stuff all over the place. In "Brown Shoes Don't Make It" he quotes (here at 4:53) the melody of the chorus of "Little Deuce Coupe", plus (if I'm not mistaken) the guitar riff from "Help Me, Rhonda" in the bass voice (presumably FZ himself):

Neat to see thread thrive. Ta, folks.
Here's real BBs Christmas/ LSN fan - Billy Martin's "California Christmas" at 0:38 uses "Christmas comes this time..." melody bit (with diff. phrase "Jingle bells ring this time...") https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=BUj6B0ko9rY

In FOREVER, between verse 1 & 2, the the vocalists sing ("do do do do...") two full bars of SEPTEMBER IN THE RAIN.

Wow--they do, don't they... It's as clear as day now but you have to be aware of it! Good call, Steve. ;)

Maybe it's my imagination but the line first heard at 0:31 in CCS's cheeky "Tap Turns On The Water" never fails to remind me of The Jackson 5's "I Want You Back":

Zappa quotes "Louie Louie" all over the place--I believe it's what he calls a "stock module".

Some examples:

- "Plastic People" and "Son Of Suzy Creamcheese" (linked below) from Absolutely Free

- "Florentine Pogen" from One Size Fits All

- "Welcome To The United States" from The Yellow Shark

In the guitar solo in "Alligator", from The Grateful Dead's second album, the kaleidoscopic Anthem of the Sun, Jerry Garcia incorporates quite a chunk of the vocal line of Donovan's "There Is A Mountain" (here at 9:05), up to and including "Oh Juanita" (Phil Lesh later joins him on bass):

Here is the Donovan song (a hit in 1967, a year before AotS was released):

A glaring example is The Velvet Underground's "There She Goes Again" (1967)...

...whose introduction is identical to that of the Marvin Gaye hit "Hitch Hike" of five years earlier:

The Beach Boys sing a melody in the disco version of HCTN that sounds a lot like the melody from Get A Job. I guess it could be argued that the entire With Me Tonight is based on that melody. It's more obvious in the up-tempo versions of the song.

According to the wiki page of Small Faces's "Lazy Sunday" the vocal backing on this track from Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake quotes "Colonel Bogey March" by F. J. Ricketts at 0:51 and "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" by the Stones at 1:45.

Here are two utterly unconnected songs each beginning with a snippet from the Stones' "Let's Spend The Night Together".

Neil Young's "Lotta Love":

...and, in a slightly altered form, The Kinks' "David Watts":

Cheap Trick quote the Move's "Brontosaurus" in the bridge to their cover of the same band's "California Man."  They also famously quote their own "Surrender" in their cover of Big Star's "In the Street" (Theme for "That 70s Show").

In Blue Oyster Cult's live cover of the MC5's "Kick Out the Jams" they quote "Ramblin' Rose" in the lead guitar showpiece bridge.

Two utterly different tracks that quote the big tune from "Third Stone From The Sun".

The Soundprops Remix of War's take on "Tobacco Road"...

...and Right Said Fred's "I'm Too Sexy":

Lovely album, S-a. ::)

The OP ruled out mashes and parodies but not samples, so why not? ;D

In the same vein, here's Betty Boo's "Doin' The Do", which samples Reparata and The Delrons' "Captain Of Your Ship":
